I do not know a lot about game programming, but if they were doing "server maintenance", it stands to wonder how an in-game error such as this happened.

Sorry man - subtle changes are frequently made whether intentional or unintentional, are not always published if they are intentional, and have occurred during "routine" maintenance.
You don't know that changes may have been made to the Guild Ranking/Member Naming issue and that it required a manual step that was missed specifically on Thelanis. The speculation on both sides (pro-turbine/pro-player) can go on and on. But it doesn't mean that there's not valid concern in the pro-player voice.

All this proves is that you may want to adjusted the tinfoil hat - sounding to tight again. But the voices in my head like it tight... keeps em snug and warm. Easier to see their reflections in the tinfoil, too. They feel safe and un-threatened, which is good really - for head-voices.
As for it not being global... ::shrug:: doesn't mean they don't monkey around with things more then they cop to publicly during the maintenance downtimes, or else why was there an error at all?

Now that it's able to be comprehended (as much as possible), let's check this out:
Isolated or not, this was supposed to be MAINTENANCE...not adding, subtracting, or changing anything. The moment something is modified in any way, it becomes a hotfix/patch, not routine maintenance. All Mem said was that they claimed routine maintenance, then this happened...meaning something was very non-routine about whatever they were doing in there. So argue with him all you want, he makes a good point...and he has a grasp on grammar as well.

Believe me if you will, that is not related to maintenance this morning. It is directly related to the guild ranks changes we made in Update 1, and patched out last week. Today after the servers came back up, a bug in the guild system start up procedures manifested itself in a really very bad way.
Expect a hotfix for this, inclusive of a preventative step on all other worlds.

*ponders through that* I can see that... IF every server had been "infected" shall we say. Baring solar flairs and bad chips (ram, I/O controllers) the code isn't going to be different from one server to the next.
What made us so special if that is the actual case? Now mind you, I can see it being as easy as whichever tech team that worked on Thelinas left out or added a step to the server restart that was NOT done on the others.
P.S. We still have butterflies... right?

If it's triggered by...say...a "bad" guild/rank name (see gorby's XKCD above)? That could very easily be different from server to server. Any assumption that it has to do with some form of data triggering a bork necessitates that it would be different.

The Guild rank naming system Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line November 9, 2009. Human decisions are removed from guild ranking and naming. The Guild rank naming system begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 10:14 a.m. Eastern time, November 9th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

It shouldn't be a surprise, Mem; reboots and resets frequently cause new issues to appear, because things that may have been corrupted or slightly alter will be have differently when re-loaded. Think about how many 'reset your computer for this change to take effect' kinds of changes you get from windows update changes .. not rebooting doesn't make your comptuer unstable in the meantime. Its not uncommon for a computer issue to manifest on reboot for this same reason, or to not behave the same way on multiple machines
for an incredibly simple example, it could be that the bug only occurs when the server is restarted and the number of seconds in the present minute end in a 5; ghallanda was :37, orien was :38, argo was :34, and thelanis happened to be :35.
Clearly, I highly doubt this is what happened, but there are so many variables that it only happening to one server on this bootup is completely realistic.
Its true you rarely don the tinfoil hat, but you are often one of the most indignant posters when Turbine has any kind of technical difficulty (looking at your shroud-closage rage 2 weeks ago, for example..). Thou needst to chill, sir.I was in a rage about the Shroud closure? Please find me where, and back that statement up.
I pointed out the irony of putting up the YouTube video on the same day as the closure, true - but I also have been one of the more frequent posters advocating patience on it's return.
I'm all for giving us info - but the Shroud is such a major quest to the game I'd rather they take the time to get it right on the first pass. They know we want the raid back up, and I'm sure they do too.
Puts me in the minority, I'm sure - but that's my take on it.Just to point out one of many.
I'm a vocal critic, yes. I'm also an enthusiastic supporter. That does not make me bipolar, nor in the need of chilling. :) It just makes me a normal person, who presents themselves honestly over the internet. Funny thing is, I know that the Devs appreciate feedback from folks like me who present their feedback in an unfiltered fashion - so long as it's neither mindless pom-pom waving nor auto-bashing. When they tell me to chill out, I'll take it under advisement. Till then, you're stuck with me as-is. :D If that is bothersome to anyone, put me on Ignore... I won't mind one bit.

Wait a minute, there has been a patch since Update 1 dropped? I remember one being scheduled for Oct 30, but it was cancelled. Last week you say? Was it some kind of stealth patch? or just a DB patch that doesn't require down time or patch notes?
Or am I just missing 24 hours? again :(

Well, if it were stealthy I don't think we would be hotfixing it today.
-- still here working on it for you Thelanis.
Thanks, Glin.

:(
Thank you for being patient with this as we recover the state of things on Thelanis.
Interesting...
But me is confused...
a bug in the guild system start up procedures
Do we blame Turbine?
related to maintenance this morning
Or the janitors?
manifested itself in a really very bad way... a preventative step
Or the hippies?
the state of things on Thelanis
Or Legion? :D

This is true.
Clay - SS or we have to assume the worst.

So what you are all saying is that I shouldn't have named my Leader rank "Drop", my successor rank "Table", members "Guild" or set rank1 to "Cascade;" ?

Thanks to the servers being down, I actually got some work done today :)
I hate when that happens.
Since we're tossing out movie quotes:
Glin: "The old patch is over. The Thelanis server is turned off for maintenance."
Rambo: "Nothing is over! You don't just turn it off!"

Don't blow it all in one spot. Then you'll be like Clay - trying to make HaHa but have given out too many in the last 24 hour.

I give out rep rarely enough that I don't think I need to worry about that. ;)

I don't know - there's a lot of funny people on this thread. Try as you might - hysteria just may grab a hold of you.
