I am new to DDO and keep reading posts about the various raid quests in the game. I'm currently only at lvl 8 on my main so I'm not there yet but am curious about what's involved in putting together a group to run a raid. Is it something that requires you to form a large group or can 2 or 3 players (with or without hirelings) run them without much trouble. I have seen posts of groups up to 12 players and also mentions of sub-groups within the main raid group. Mainly I'm just curious as to what's involved as I get closer to that level of quest. Thanks.

In a nutshell Raids are just quests designed to give a party of 12 a challenge instead of giving a party of 6 a challenge. Almost all raids have actually been beaten solo, but that takes a special character build and often a LOT of high end resources and consumables to pull off. It is not efficient and mainly a bragging rights thing.
There is one "raid" you could enter right now, Tempest Spine. It has some named loot but not what most would consider "raid loot". It is the only 12 man quest open to all.
Most raids also have prerequisite quests that have to be completed before to "flag" the character as being eligible to run the quest.
Nothing to really plan for at this point.

Thanks.
Another question, do raid quests tailor themselves based on the number of people in the party? I seem to recall reading somewhere that other quests in the game do that. My main reason for asking is that typically I run all the quests with a buddy of mine. Sometimes we use hirelings and sometimes his son plays but mainly it's just us. If we're going to need to group with more people for the raid quests down the road I'd kind of like to start looking now for other players we like playing with. Thanks again.

Raids do not scale down to party size and you may not use hirelings or Turbine Store rest shrines or raise dead clickies. Also many raids do not let you reenter once the raid has begun, so no recalling for supplies or rezing out and running back to finish.
If you want to raid, you will need to form or join a group.

99% sure that raids do not scale for based on how many people in your group.
