Is it necessary to take the THF chain to do decent dps end game? I was thinking of having a mix of defensive and offensive feats. But since 20 pally is so low on feats , taking the thf chain seems like a streatch. I want to have s/b for when i need ac, and 2hw for when i need to dps. So will i be gimped end game or only loose a little dps without glancing blows.

THF chain is definantly worth it for dmg as it adds extra glancing blows, more dmg on the glancing blows, and increases the chance of extra effects, like bursts and pure good etc, to go off on ur glancing blows.

If you can fit it in, then take it, otherwise it's not too big of a loss. If you take the Paladin capstone and are a Knight of the Chalice, all your glancing blows will apply those effects regardless. :)

He means the feats: two-handed fighting, improved two-handed fighting and greater two-handed fighting

Ah thx for the reply. Can you tell me what knight of the chalice is? I'm a level 11 pally just trying to get back into the game.

It's a Prestige line you start at level 6 through enhancements. Most classes have 1 or more Prestige lines available to them with 1-3 levels of it acquired at levels 6, 12 and 18.

In short, these are typically the "best" setups (note the quotes, gear and spec is important):

Barbarian (Frenzied Berserker): THF
Fighter (Kensai, Non-WF): TWF
Fighter (Kensai, WF): THF
Paladin (Knight of the Chalice): THF
Ranger (Tempest): TWF
Rogue (Assassin): TWF
Rogue (Thief/Acrobat): THF (Quarter Staff)

Is 2 handed fighting really that good for a pally? From my time way back when and now back I've noticed I do a lot better with a shield. Am I in the minority using a shield? Should I be looking at changing to 2 handed and at what level to I start getting the knight of chalice stuff? I did buy the feat for 2handed fighting years ago.

One last question if you don;t mind helping me a bit here is how do you get to be a member of the sliver flame so you can access some vendor in the market place associated to them?

My paladin usually runs around with a vorpal khopesh and a tower shield, but when raiding and DPS is needed, I switch to a greatsword.

It all depends on your play style but if you want to output damage, you need to use a two hander or dual wield.

For the Silver Flame vendor you need to achieve 400 Silver Flame favor. It means you have to run a lot of the necropolis stuff on Elite.

Is a bastard sword still one of the best 1 handers?

Oh boy, that’s going to cause a flamewar! :p Opinions on this are varied, what follows is just mine and I make no claims to being an expert:

I’d advise against bastard swords unless you have a lot just sitting around. Against non-crittable mobs bastard swords are decent, but only if you are a human. Bastard swords really aren’t that great and never have been.

Against everything else the damage is sub-optimal. Khopesh crits harder as it’s a X3 multiplier. If you are a dwarf, dwarven axes are better due to dwarven axe enhancements. Rapiers/Longswords in the hands of an elf/drow are also very good. I’m fairly certain you’d see more DPS out of scimitars as well.

My personal observation on my 19 Paladin is it was a mistake to go S&B as even with a tower shield my AC currently isn’t enough to justify the loss in DPS (chose INT as my dump stat). KOTC has added some boosts to DPS and utility, but when I get a chance to redo my paladin, I will be going either TWF or THF.

Now, if you don't care about max DPS or other power gaming concerns and happen to have a lot of bastard swords, like the way they look or whatever, then go for broke and enjoy! Decent bastard swords are ALOT easier to find than khopeshes/rapiers/dwarven axes.

Or you can build a crit monkey with khopesh's
