so i've seen alot of these builds around but are they actually that powerful? or are people just making them for a self healing fighter

most of the ones i see dump wisdom

i have a 20 cleric and 13fvs/1monk both specced in wisdom and i have to say that i can't see any non-offensive caster cleric/fvs build being more powerful than a caster cleric/fvs (or at least one that can offensively cast)

cc's, damage spells and instant kills are too good to give up. anything that cant be instant killed (usually on harder settings) is blade barriered/fw

i can see the DR mitigating most if not all the damage on normal settings but elite?

I think most folks that go the low Wisdom WF thf route consciously trade the "offensive caster" capabilities of a FvS in exchange for the melee / immunities / survivability this build offers. They still make very effective healers, however.

you can make wisdom 14 and still have an extremely effective melee build who heals literally with the best of them and can lay down a BB with quicken and maximize that will utterly destroy everything.

I have one, it's awesome. My DC's will be 2 to 3 lower than other full casting specced builds, and I might have a lower spell pen since I'm not taking those feats. I can still heal as well or better than any cleric, and do a butload of damage with my giant SP reserves. Andwhen I run out, I'll swing that vorpal or whatever harder than most other healing builds.

It's rad.

are you putting your level up pts into wis or str? if its str then it will be more like 4-5 lower DC which is quite significant. i am quite familiar with the all too often tossed around "max-emp-quick-bb"... but without DCs on an evasion mob its going to be doing 0 damage 90% of the time. soloing on my pure, i have to cursespew 2-3x in 1 fight that bearded devil saligia guardian in SoA to kill it (evasion and insane hp... literally no hope without some kind of debuff) and thats equivalent to +4 DC (31 norm).

although i can't recall how much damage he hits for, a WF FVS might be able long haul melee it out but i'm just illustrating where a low wisdom WF FVS BB will fail and not all situations allow you to melee instead of BB (eg:DQ... not sure whether she has evasion... probably not).

personally i wouldn't have spell pen on my chars anyway unless i was a wiz. i'd get focus over spell pen if i was even going for the better to hit route (but still pick up spell pen enhancement) and use BB to kill what ever has high spell resistance (eg: drow)

it doesn't matter how hard you swing a vorpal or support weapon although no1 will turn it down if it hits harder... for general dps i'd agree with you.

also WF get hands down the worst capstone spell of the lot

also WF get hands down the worst capstone spell of the lot

But with Ada Body and enhancements, they get DR/15 (Adamantine).

Add in a torc and 1-2 conc. opposition items, and you will be quite happy.

It can take some time to get to level 20 and aquire these items tho.

found mine to have decent melee and casting ability by going the wisdom route. I dont mind doing ~6 points less a swing to actually have functioning spells. I find myself using cometfall ALOT more than blade barrier, particularly when doing Monastery runs. A max'd cometfall trips everything (if doesnt kill them outright) and leaves them easily dispatched with a melee hit or two (even the wisdom build does high 40s, low 50s base damage with solo buffs; few more pieces of raid loot and it'll be significantly higher)
