Based on the new http://my.ddo.com/leaderboard/guild/ site. This appears to be much more accurate than MyDDO for guild numbers and includes numbers for the previously bugged guilds.

The above list accounts for a little over 10,000 characters. Assuming an average of 5 characters per player (maybe a bad assumption), that is about 2500 players.
Turbine suggested recently in press releases that there are hundreds of thousands of players. Assuming a somewhat even distribution among servers, that would mean that there are many tens of thousands (at least) players on Thelanis. If that is the case, than only a minority of players are in the established guilds. Interesting.

#4 scares me.
I suspect Smokey's may actually have the most players of any guild. Smokey's has a lot of newer players which, I suspect, don't have that many characters per player (yet). I know that the other high population guilds are loaded with lots of very experienced players, many of which have 5-20+ characters per player. For example, I'd guess Legion averages 10+ characters per player so the 400ish characters probably represents less than 40 people. I'd guess that Smokey's 400ish characters represents at least 100 people. Storm Lords may be close--but if I had to place a bet, I'd guess Smokey's has the most players right now.
As a new guild, with lots of less experienced players, that will probably change over time. Groups will fraction off and form their own guilds, etc.
The other surprise here was The Tree House. I don't remember them being around before, but they are quickly rising up the population ranks.

Makes you wonder how they're recruiting. Well, not really I guess.

Thanks for pulling that info together. I love that kind of stuff.
As an aside, Legion automatically deletes any Guild toon that has not logged in game in 6 months. We've deleted hundreds of toons from the Roster which helps keep it clean.

Good point, Ren. Pestilence has deleted millions of toons, but now that Niq has a new girlfriend, our numbers will become relatively static.

I just appreciate the list, cause I have never heard of 60% of them,
ex: 168 Alliance Francophone has more members then ATD, yet I cant say I have ever seen an alliance Francophone standing in meridia/ or at AH but who knows maybe they are out there

I see them often enough, way more than ATD. I suspect AF has more active players, not just a roster, at least from my observations.
The AF I've run with are pretty good players to boot.

The Tree House is the only guild larger than my own that I've never really heard/seen. But like it was said earlier, it probably has a majority of new players/low level toons in it, and I've not done a whole lot of low level grouping since the update.

That's called mail...or /tells. One or the other. PMs happen on the forum. I'll see if I can find a youtube video that walks you through the process. I'll *mail* you a walkthrough link, in game, as soon as I find it (that way, you have one of my toons). Then you can PM me here and let me know what happened with the whole "in the marketplace surrounded by AF" prediction.

Buy a lottery ticket now, for you are a very lucky person.
The list is definitely missing some guilds, for whatever reason. I know for sure it's missing at least a couple that have maybe 10 characters in it since I grouped with those recently and looked them up. Though, they might just be too new to be in the last guild update or something.

Nice list, oh "Lord of Lindbergh"; keep it up and you should get the forum title of MyDDO Statistician. Definitely keeps me entertained in the few moments I am trapped at work but can still read/post. I believe I have played with a member of nearly every guild on that list at least a couple times when I feel the need to go mercenary and I think it represents Thelanis fairly well.
The Bane list will only consist of people that have logged in the last month. Once you hit one month without giving notice your characters are booted. They will welcome you back but they don't keep inactive people on the guild list.
Also King, populations are rarely distributed evenly among servers. You will find that on all games the most populous server is the one that appears on top the first time you log into the game. In the case of DDO it's alphabetical order. So go down that list alphabetically and you will know in what order the populations go. I'm sure the population of Argo is much much larger than Thelanis.

The new emerging guilds are growing fast. My.ddo.com has updated. Smokey's is now at 502 and The Tree House is at 305.
I'll update the whole list in a couple weeks and every once and a while after that.

Thanks for the catch. I will add them on the next update (all of the numbers have changed now that my.ddo is updated, so I will add GSI with the new numbers for everyone).
When I plugged GSI in originally, it came up a dead link--I can see now that this was due to a punctuation difference.

I would rather know how many girls are in each guild.
What I notice is that people are not evenly distributed by time-zone. Ghallanda and Khyber are the places to play if you are in Asia it seems. But I still like Thelanis because there seems to be a more casual player attitude.

I don't see Dungeon Rats on the list... I know we are not HUGE but I think we have the numbers to qualify for the list. (I'll get you numbers if you like.) We started as just our local Pen-and-paper group over 3 1/2 years ago but have added members since then. (ACTUALLY, we have added p-and-p members from DDO via scype to our biweekly sessions!) We DO have a few PLAYERS on deployment right now (and we DON'T boot them for it) so not EVERY name is active daily, but for a small guild, we DO have members online every day.

I've been having trouble with X. The DDO search engine requires a three-letter name to search for guilds. Can you give me the name of one of the characters in X? With that, I can link through to get to the guild site. I will add X on the next update.

I put a cut-off of 50 characters because there are a gazillion smaller guilds that I was finding too hard to track. It looks like Hey has 33 now. Since they are close to 50, I've added them to the list of guilds to track. When they pop over 50, I'll add them to the list.

I'm actually surprised at how high The Militia is on that list. Even though we have a lot of people in the guild, it still feels cozy (which is a good thing).
Of course, I have 10 toons in the guild, so I'm probably inflating the numbers. ;-)
I haven't really looked at myddo much. How hard would it be to do further data mining for stats per guild like:
Average/median/mode on character level
Breakdown of characters by class (percentage and/or raw numbers)
Breakdown of charcters by race (percentage and/or raw numbers)

I think the broken english mail that he got from the "guild leader of France Phono" was pretty funny....if for no other reason than that I took the time to create a new guild and babelfish random portions.
I go the extra mile for lame schtick.
A name/character in a guild means nothing if its been inactive for an extended period of time. How many of those characters in these guilds have been inactive over 1 months time? How many characters have been sitting there for over a years time? How large a guild is means absolutely nothing if its members arent actively playing within it.

Its pretty accurate right now. Characters that have not logged in since the mod (what is that about 2 months ago?) do not show up. It will become less accurate over time for those guilds that don't boot stale characters.

Dont know when the list is updated by Turbine but there are names listed in guild on myddo but have actually been removed from guild for inactivity awhile back. It appears these numbers are off by a moderate margin when physically viewing the numbers in guild vs myddo.

Hmmm. Good to know. I know that the my.ddo database has some issues. Hopefully these anomalies are somewhat random and across the board so that the relative numbers remain fairly accurate.

Sockie.
Add 8 toons to Inferus sus....
Only 2 of my toons are getting actualized on myddo.
The numbers are probably far higher then what you are getting today considering that a lot of people are not getting his toons updated on my ddo.
For example Trooper / Ironehell /Dreamhealer / Charlotee ..... are not in Inferus SUS rooster on myddo.

I've got to go by the my.ddo numbers for this (even if they are wrong) so that it is even treatment for all guilds listed.

I should have been more specific. I search for the guild and it shows up with a link. I click on the link, then I get the error message. Maybe I'm missing something?

That's weird. Might be a temporary bug. I just ran into the same thing. This wasn't happening earlier. It seems to be unique to your guild. You might want to put in a bug notice for this.

I've just played around with the links, and it truly is bugged. You'll have to nag Turbine about it. :(

Notable points:
1) Smokey's Guild appears to be the largest guild on the server now (data not available for Storm Lords tough)
2) Brotherhood made a huge gain
3) Sublime Permadeath made a huge gain
4) C.L.A.W. came roaring into the picture
5) Most guilds gained in size quite a bit
I'm hoping the bug gets fixed so that all of the data can be completed.
Please let me know if I am missing your guild!! (must have 50 characters)

Erebus will be added on the next update--pending fix of the my.ddo.com bug. Unfortunately, the Erebus information is not currently available--although they do have more than sufficient numbers to make the list (about 30 active players--with many more than that in characters).

This whole guild thing cracks me up.
One day so and so guild is the largest and then a few weeks later its another.
Then some guild comes out of no where and adds everyone off the boat into their guild and they are now the biggest, but their avg. character level is 4.
Lately at the mid to high level range I've seen a LOT of Quest for Immortality (ran with a few, pretty good) and Erebus (haven't run with any yet).
Tomorrow another guild or 2 will disappear or be merged with another and then some other will be the biggest.
**** Socks, this is a full time job you have got going on here... haha
But, more importantly to me and most likely a lot more would be some correlation of size to quality of player and some equation that states which guild you would want to team with and which you want to avoid.
Honestly, some of the larger guilds in the game are those I avoid like the plague and some of the smaller guilds are ones I always look for because of the guarantee of quality of players.
As Alter stated, which to me is the most important... leaders / officers of guilds that ensure the quality of their guild is more important than size are doing a better job than those just taking anyone without a guild tag and inviting them.
I laughed the other day when some guy from some guild I never heard of was running a quest with me saw no guild tag above my head and invited me to his guild. I politely said no ty, but seriously I wanted to say, dude... I was in Legion and *** would make you think I could go from that guild to your no name, nothing guild? I almost did, but I thought... what's the point, this is the kind of guy who won't stop doing that anyways.
In the end, I've been back for about 2 weeks now on a p/t basis and am loving having no guild. That might change some day soon as I have had a number of great people in top guilds ask me about what I'm doing, but I tell you this... I will look at the guild list and will bet you anything that I won't be joining the guild with the most members.
:)
BTW... good work keeping this all together.

...
Turbine suggested recently in press releases that there are hundreds of thousands of players. Assuming a somewhat even distribution among servers, that would mean that there are many tens of thousands (at least) players on Thelanis. If that is the case, than only a minority of players are in the established guilds. Interesting.
2 things...
First, I'm sure Turbine's numbers might be a BIT high, but hey... only they know.
Second, There are a number of other guild names I see running around with only a few players in the guild. This means some people like to just play with friends and are happy to stay out of larger guilds. I've also seen a number of players without guild tags or something obviously simple and unique to them to keep the guild recruiters off their backs.
I always loved that guild name "I dont' need your stupid guild".
:)
In the end, I started in Swarm, then moved to X, co-formed The Unbound that merged with Ba'al Verzi to form BVU and then landed in Legion and now solo. 4.5 guilds in 3 years and what did any of them do for me?
Not a lot.
Sure you get to know some of the players in the guild better than you might have if you weren't in the guild, but honestly I think I know people better in the game who I've not been in a guild with, than those I have guilded with. I've also learned more and had way more fun and had way more help / assistance from people like Kyrian, Eriik and Emma, Pyx, The Leader of Drink and Be Merry (and all her Cleric toons... haha), Etc... Etc..., people I've not been in a guild with. Sure, there are exceptions like Scars, Crazyhorse, Memnir, etc... but in the end, I'm sure those guys and I would have got along just the same in the same guild or not.
People will say that with a top guild you will learn more.
Umm... not really.
I learned a hell of a lot more pugging with different people and guilds than I have in the guild I was in. I find that inside guilds run raids the same way over and over again and it is not always the best way... it is their way and gets boring.
Honestly, I think being in guilds can be restrictive. They want / expect you will team more with them than you will pug, which to me makes sense, but you better really like your guildies, or that won't be a lot of fun. This is the secret to successful guilds... people who are similar and get along and have a well established guild mantra and regulations that you are good with.
So, when I see unguilded people, people with their own guild tags or smaller, more personal guilds, I can understand where you would have a lot of people not on your master guild list.

Thanks for your thoughts on this Ministry.
Since the F2P change, the guild stats have really gone all over the place. Even the old well-established guilds (which historically kept pretty stable numbers) have fluctuated a lot (most have grown in size a good bit).
I've been tracking these stats for a number of different reasons. Foremost--I'm a stat geek and love collecting and sorting numbers (the greedy reason). The size list also has some benefit in helping people find groups that are somewhat active. Rather than joining a guild that has 70 characters, some people may prefer one that has 400+ simply for the increased chance of there being a lot of people on at any given time (keeping in mind that the numbers don't completely correlate with ACTIVE players). Likewise, some people might want to join a smaller group where they can easily get to know everyone well. People also might get a sense for the stability of the guild based on whether it is holding steady numbers or fluctuating wildly. A further benefit of the list is that it allows guild officers and leaders to see whats going on in their own guild and other equivalent guilds.
Once my.ddo.com is more stable as a stat source, I will add some additional stats to this list (or to another thread)--such as average level, number of capped characters, etc. I did an early attempt at collecting stats on capped clerics and sorcs (those threads are burried somewhere)--but the numbers were too preliminary to have much value. I will revisit that again in the future. I am quite aware that any ranking based on my.ddo stats will be a bit controversial because of at least: errors in the data; my.ddo only shows what people were wearing when they logged off (and their buffed status), not necessarily their "best foot forward"; people won't agree on the degree to which certain stats correlate with quality; and on and on.
But the geek in me will keep collecting and posting stats. I can't help myself :)

I'd love to include everyone on the list (my initial list tried to do this); but it becomes extraordinarily difficult to monitor and update all of the smaller guilds. The 50 character cut-off does go pretty small though. For a small guild with vets, this might mean only 3-7 players. I am sure the list is missing a bunch of smaller guilds with over 50 characters. I count on people letting me know that I am missing them to get them added to the list. If I see a lot of people running around in game with a tag that isn't on my list, I'll investigate it and add it myself--but mostly the small ones will need to send me a note to get added.

Not a lot.
Totally the opposite for me. I've made some great friends in guilds...people who I keep in touch with out of game who haven't played ddo for years.
I don't have that relationship with anyone in DDO who wasn't in a guild with me.
This is not by design, but I don't believe it's coincidental either.

OMG.. you are already doing a lot to help people out.
As you stated, the benefits to this information to people is very valuable, especially for people thinking about joining, switching, etc...
You are correct, there are some OFF the Charts AMAZING players in a few of the smaller guilds that may not make your list, but i'm sure they are fine with it.

Well bro, that's a very nice outcome for you and definitely ideal, and as you stated... an intentional desired outcome.
But, its amazing how I have way more friends in game that I have never been in a guild with then those I have been... except Scars (RL friend - same city), Crazyhorse and Memnir.
Maybe I just don't suit guild life or too much of me or too much of anyone around me is just not a good thing.
:)
and seriously... I did pug a lot over the past years or so and that is probably why I ended up reaping more benefits outside the guilds, then inside... with a few exceptions.

Hey Socks, et all...
In prime time Friday night I took a quick look at the "WHO" list to see the ratio of guilded to unguilded players and it was 55/45.
45% unguilded and many of them were level 20.
So, if you take out the casual players in guilds that are in guilds just because they got scooped off the boat or made a small or solo guild to avoid guilds, it looks like it's a pretty even split.
Interesting.

If you click around with your my.ddo pages (ie: look at your own profile characters), the guild profile info (member count) will occasionally show up -- but it will show up awkwardly (off center from where is should be, intruding over top of other content).
I know that's not an ideal solution, but maybe some posters from guilds you can't get numbers for might stumble on the buggy display. Last I saw, about a week ago, SL was at 819 according to my.ddo.com -- but they haven't had an inactive clean out in a looooong time.

Of interest this update: I noticed a lot of characters with Az Inc. tags running around, so I looked them up to add them to the list. To my surprise, they are the biggest guild on the server! (or at least the biggest I've spotted to date).
Ya know, that's kindof scary. I'm going to assume that Az Inc. and Smoky's share the same recruitment strategy.

The numbers are based on my.ddo's count of number of characters (rather than number of people). The data is not completely accurate and in some cases may be pretty far off. Using my.ddo seems to be the best way to collect the data across that many guilds on a regular basis (I'd love to poll guild leaders--but expect I'd get about 3-4 responses).

It stays pretty up to date now. But it has some bugs where certain guilds and certain characters can't be accessed (your guild Erebus, being one of them--I know you have a large number of players and would be on the list--but for the bug).

Let's give it a quick accuracy test. It shows me 50 of the 98 characters. See if these are all current (are any of these not in the guild?) (keep in mind this is missing 48 of the characters in my.ddo.com).

Why not just join each guild and do a physical count, see how active they are in comparison to their numbers.
That wouldn't really work all that well.
Some guilds have relatively strict recruiting policies.
Others, all you have to be capable of is clicking 'ok' on the recruit button.
KoC .. are you doing all of this manually, or doing scripting pulls against my.ddo.com?

Just counted. Roughly 48 players in the guild. I would say about 40, given alts I do not know about.
Thanks! I tried it for IS and couldn't get it to work. Let me know if you find a trick to get access to other guild's info to cut through the bug.
I screwed around with it a bit, and noticed I get the guild info only with certain characters in a guild. For instance, shehulk (not me) shows me the numbers every time - even refreshing, clearing the cache, opening a new browser instance. You can check and see if you find the same info. In which case, I guess it's only certain toons that show the info, and you gotta click your way to it and get lucky.
Here is what it looks like:
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/4259/78316357.th.jpg (http://img714.imageshack.us/i/78316357.jpg/)
I'm not totally sure my.ddo is tracking the numbers correctly though. 819 last I saw and now 844? I doubt that. I think it might be messing up on TRs or deletions/rerolls somehow. /shrug
Still, some numbers are better than none.

Did you figure out my question?
I was able to pull all the names from my.ddo by cross sorting forward and backwards alphabetically. Here are the 98 characters listed for Merc's. To figure out what my.ddo has wrong or stale--is it possible for you to identify/confirm?:
1) that all of the characters were a member at some time
2) which are no longer members--and when they were removed/withdrew
If you are counting 40ish current characters in guild, this means that my.ddo has another 50 that shouldn't be there.
I'd like to try to figure out if my.ddo holds onto some old data and never lets it go. I know I've seen some characters switch guilds and they do disappear from one guild list and appear on another. So I'm wondering what mechanisms cause it to represent characters as currently in the guild if they are not.

Update 2/2/10
A few items worth mentioning:
First and foremost: I've added a column to include actual numbers provided by a guild member. So far I've only added my own guild. If you would like, please designate a member of your guild to post your actual numbers here and I will add them to the updates. So that we are all following the same process (and comparing apples to apples), please obtain the number by entering the game, going to the guild tab, and counting all characters listed (whether active or not). I found the easiest way to do this is to resize the window so that it includes exactly a certain number of characters (I used 15), start at the bottom, click up using the side bar, then multiply the number of clicks by the number per page and add any extra ones from the last page (that didn't fill a full page).
It would be great if one person from each guild (that is interested in participating) could be designated to provide this info to keep things consistent.
1) added eNigma '
2) removed Forever the Villains (no activity)

The recent guild mass deletion joke on Argo has demonstrated two things...

2) the guild numbers on myDDO.com are totally bogus. It would appear that people who leave the guild or are kicked are not removed from the myddo.com page

It does appear that there is some of that--but it isn't perfectly wrong that way either--which makes it even more unpredictable. For example, I know people that have left my guild (or been booted) have accurately been reported on my.ddo. But it is also clear that others are not. I'm still watching to see if there is a specific consistent and predictable mechanism to this. For example, if someone is booted or leaves and joins another guild--perhaps it updates. But if they leave the game or don't re-guild it does not? Who knows. I figure we will figure it out over time--or at least figure out what we can't figure out.
I know that for Inferus Sus, the numbers have been pretty accurate (although not perfect) on my.ddo. But I think that is in part due to the fact that we clear the guild roster regularly to remove characters that have not logged on recently.

Hello
Credendo Vides is a small, but growing guild, mixing new players with experienced players. We welcome all serious, relaxed, team-players (pay-to-play & free-to-play) and strive to remain drama free. Credendo Vides is Latin, meaning: By Believing, One Sees. To many of the players of DDO, this sums up the game experience. To us in Credendo Vides, this is how we play our characters and therefore the game. We help our members develop and level their characters. A lot of our members are girls experiencing this game for the first time or even having played with their brothers and boyfriends. We also have guys who played paper & pen (tabletop) when D&D first came out, and know their rules. We do not try to cheat the game or the experience. We do share gold, items and knowledge with our newer members, as they develop and refine their characters, as they choose. Our guild preaches and teaches team play over solo play and we will start running multiple guild runs for quests. We are currently recruiting (see Holly or send tell) for like minded players..... By Believing, Ones Sees....

1) Guild leader: Holly - female Bard
2) Guild officer: Tanyaa - female Fighter
3) Guild successor/officer: Morrigwyn - female Fighter
4) Guild officer: UrsoNovo - male Sorcerer / Barbarian

Those numbers seem inflated. With over a 1000 members you would think that one would see AZ Inc. all over the place.
I rarely see a AZ Inc guildie in party or just standing around. Where as, I see or have grouped with Smokey's guild
considerably more times than AZ Inc. Maybe it's the time I play, maybe it's the circles I run in, maybe it's the quest I am running in, maybe! I am actually surprised when I see a AZ Inc. member in game.
KingOfCheese, do you use some kind of filter based upon Last updated ?
And if not, wouldn't a filter such as last updated minus some period of time (say 30 days) give better results.
This would filter out people that have joined a guild and then quite or stopped playing.
Or maybe use character log of last quest completed date - period of time.
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered before.
Disclaimer, I do not belong to AZ Inc. or Smokey's Guild and these are just my personal observations.

Most are in the 2-8th range. Though the core group are hovering from 10-15th at this point. We only have a handful of 16th+, myself one of them. From my interactions I see that the bulk are on in the early morning(0400pst) or in the late evening(1800pst).

Interestingly, Musashi used to purge C.L.A.W. of inactive toons even before the renown system went into effect, including inactive alts of active members. Every few months he goes through the list and boots any toon that hasn't been logged in for 4 months, or some similar length of time. Toons that become active again need only ask for a reinvite, but I don't think many do.
We've talked of late about unguilding mules and similar toons for purposes of the renown system, because it's nice to not have to work as hard to climb in rank. We're steadily climbing despite most of us not fundamentally changing our play style. I think the only difference I've made to my own play style is taking renown quest rewards (of any size) when the alternative is vendor trash (of any price level), and perhaps trying to make certain not to skip any easy chests no matter the quest level just because of the potential for renown drops.
Most of the senior C.L.A.W. members that are on all the time have between 4 and 8 active toons that get frequent play. A lot of junior members have only 1 or 2 active. I note many applicants have a list of lowbie (probably gimped) toons that I never see get any play time after they join. That's, uh... probably a good thing. :) Most of those toons probably don't get guilded, and the ones that do get flushed out by Musashi, eventually.

Right - this is the extent of the change in my play as well. I haven't seen anyone say "let's farm renown" - maybe, "hey, we were going to do an elite shroud, I bet that's great for renown." Better things to do with my time than farm or grind..

Yeah, exactly. For the advantages the renown system potentially gives me, it's still worth more to me to spend my time doing whatever benefits me the most, even if that means a mostly-renownless Sands explorer grind for various loot (or whatever it is I decide is what I need to be doing the most).
Having access to an in-guild 5% XP boost is probably not as useful as aquiring key gear, and getting it on quest XP is probably not even going to outpace the rate of XP gain if I'm doing something like a toon's first run of a new explorer area for early s/r/e gains.
And while the renown perks are nice, the guild perks are nicer, anyway. I wouldn't give up C.L.A.W. if we were last in the leaderboards and had no airship or benefits of any kind.

2. I guess I'll go back to keeping stats on the respective e-peen sizes of various guilds and players. I haven't posted these yet--am still working on the correct algorithms that downplay my shortcomings.

Long overdue update. This is based on:
http://my.ddo.com/leaderboard/guild/
This site appears to be much more accurate than the prior MyDDO data--which showed some guilds over 1000 members (which isn't possible).
May want to add a note that it counts all characters, including inactive ones. Some guilds look bigger than they really are due to not having any purge policy.

Probably don't hear about them too much but Cradle of Life currently has roughly a 3 month threshold on removing inactive characters (other than about 30 which belong to a couple members on a 6-month break.)
My time reference being east coast US (EST), they see activity for a couple players almost always online other than the very wee hours of the morning, and usually have larger showings 12-15 players at peak EST and PST play times.
