OK, so I recently acquired Dimension Door for my sorceress. But it appears that all this spell does is create a door back to the entance of the dungeon.
Why would I want to do this? Considering that I can recall out if I wanted to leave.... the only reason I can imagine is if I want to return to my departure point: since the DD seems to remain for a while, I could leave the dungeon, then return more quickly to my starting point? Is that correct?
Are there some situations where this would be useful? Perhaps in later quests in which it is not easy or possible to simply run back through a cleared dungeon?

sometimes you fall down somewhere where you cant get away anymore
just dd out and dont take the xp hit recall would have given
also it saves times in few quests where you pass the entrance several times
also when youre swarmed by mobs, cast a dd and be safe. you cant rc when 50 devils are beating you

1) If you fall into a pit with no exit full of lava and you hold the only of a necessary key(chains of flame), you get on a rock, cast ddoor and go back to where you need to be.
2) There is only 1 shrine near the entrance, and everyone's tapped for sp/hp (vile apothecary)
3) You picked up crates that must be turned in to someone at the beginning (stormcleave, or lots of others)
4) Your party decides to do an optional it thought about skipping.

Mostly its for convience and a time saver. As mentioned, it avoid the recall and reentry penalty on EXPerience as well.
It is also a way to save your butt when things are going south badly.

You can also use them for fun sometimes. A well-placed DD at the start of "Relic of a Sovereign Past" will almost always have someone fall down into that first turn of lava.
One place where it's extremely useful for another example: Tempest Spine. People fall down off the mountaintop, jump down & open a DD for them. Otherwise they typically get lost & die running back. And there's always the pit... :)

Cool thanks!
It sounds like there are a number of cases where I'll be glad to have it, then.

Dimension door is a 1-way trip. You cannot go back to wher eyou cast it by walking through the "other" door at the start of the Quest.

What do you mean? I've done this.
In Three Barrel Cove, for example, I cast DD down by the docks. It took me to the tavern. Then I turned around and walked through it back to the docks.
I'll test again to see what it's limits are...

And as a specific use, in the quest "Rest for the Restless", you can not solo it unless you have dimension door. At one part you have to pull a lever to open a different gate, but you get locked in when you do it, (the set up calls for a 2nd person to open the distant lever to release you). Using dimension door, you pull lever - exit back to beginning, continue quest.

Since its introduction, I've never seen the return door. So don't believe it is possible. What I do know that happens, is that for some instances like Threnal, where there are multiple places to "start" the quest, that it might take you back to wher you last came out.
In Threnal, I 've had DD take me back to the wagon from House P and to the Tent/Bar.

Okay, Enter the Titan.... The easiest way past the huge ******** puzzle room is to not worry about getting someone stuck inside a door. A ddoor gets you out.
For Convienience sake, you lose xp, and more xp when you leave and come back in. if you're doing a quest like say for instance the pit?? Its really convienient. Some places like VoN 5/6 , or the Shroud.... D-Door is a bad thing. Sometimes you leave a shrine at the start of a quest, that should have reset by now on normal. Say you're running around in the Desert, you've cleared the Undead chests, and now want to start blasting towards the scorrow. Pits, Locked rooms, 2 man levers. You have hirelings to activate the lever in Rest for the Restless now. Yay, and when the ghasts kill him, you could take an xp hit, and or you could save your stinkin money and use your d'door. There is Ddoor the spell and Ddoor the dragonmark. The dragonmark has been invaluable to each of my chars that have it. Yes, I could just lose xp, but why? Yes I could just waste some of my cash on a hireling. DDO is very frequently a game of resources. Watch the comparison?
Does anyone cast cure light wounds???? I don't understand why you don't just step out of the quest and wait to heal outside the quest?? Why don't you just buy healing potions?? What a waste of a spell??
Dimension Door is a nice convienient resource that prevents you from having to recall out. In some quests from having to buy a hireling. Prevents you from having to run all the way back to the beginning. Try not having a d-door in Rainbow in the Dark??? That's a very convienient quest to have it in.
Some quests that start inside a dungeon instance like all the ones in the Vale, make sure your recall button doesn't drop you in the 12's instance instead of Meridia.
I'm 19037, and that's what I think.

Dimension Door is the only way I can think of to loot two optional chests in "I dream of Jeets" short of recalling... this is only one example of the utility of this spell. The power in this spell comes from creative ways of using it.
DD is a time saver, it can be part of a strategy and it can be a quest saver. What it actually does is it takes you to the last zoned in entrance point of the instance you are in.
BTW... there bloody was a time you could buy Dimension Door in scrolls from the vendor, it along with firewall and other AOE spells were all purchasable and affected the games looting community quite so… You see, back on level cap 14 a sorcerer could easily run thru something like “Feast or Famine” (pretty much still can) but scroll DD quickly to the entrance step out use the shrine reenter the instance haste and continue… Result was a lot of loot soloing going on… did not even require a spell slot, Sorc’s Wizards, even bards and rogues were doing such with bought scrolls of Firewalls, cloud kills and yes DD.

There are some quests that are made a lot easier with DD.
For example, Taming the Flames in HouseK has infinitely respawning Fire Eles and you have to go past the entrance 3 times. By using DD, you skip a ton of respawned mobs. Also, some dungeons have traps at dead ends. Like "Go to a dead end and get a key, door locks and a bunch of mobs spawn in on you. You can grab the key, DD out and save a ton of HP/SP.
It's definitely not something that I would keep loaded at all times, but for specific dungeons, it's useful.

And you can always cast it on the raid loot chest
