Being a former member of the US Army, I want to say thank you. You might or might not know it, but things like this make us so proud to serve this country. Knowing that people like yourself and the others who gather for this event like this.

So to you, as best as my crippled body can. I salute you.

Bekki
11-04-2009, 07:53 AM
Thank you Ericnox,

what you and our veterans do
we cannot say thank you enough for...

You selflessly put your bodies and lives on the line
in the hopes that our children will not have to...

And there is no way to truly repay that enough.

So from and "Old Marine"

I say again in all humility...

Thank you.

As a grumpy retired Army First Sergeant I appreciate this effort. Maybe moreso tonight in the aftermath of events out at Fort Hood, but also in appreciation for those who went before me and those who served with me and those who now carry on in the service to our nation.

I had the opportunity to serve in Germany in the mid 80's and my landlord was a former German soldier who had fought in WWII. I discovered that he and I were alike -- both proud of our country, willing to serve to defend it and proud of our service. Every nation's soldiers are the same -- men and women who believe in their country and are willing to serve and, if need be, to die in its defense.

It is a hard thing to grasp when we find ourselves at war with one another -- each believing that our side is right and the other is wrong. This is why soldiers, more than any other, hate war. We know it, we understand it, we grasp its necessity. But we hate it and love peace -- love it so much that we are willing to die for it if we must.

So, while this is an American holiday and day of appreciation it is also -- by the very nature of our world today -- an international moment. A time -- for just a few minutes -- to remember that we are all human beings who each hopes to see a day when we all live in respectful peace with one another free from oppression and war. A day when those we love don't have to wake up to their spouse or parent far away or see the uniforms walking to their front doors to tell them that that husband, wife, son, daughter, father or mother will never come home again.

Thank you Bekki for your thoughtfulness and kindness to us.

Early Morning Wake up call...

It was spring of 1991:

That Dang AMAD (an auxiliary gearbox) pump just wouldn't seat right!
We had been fighting with it all night... Trying to get it to stop
leaking
Along with the tube that run across the top of the access bay, and we
were tired...
But we had finally managed to get it in right and smiled as we watched
#05
head for a test flight... We took turns getting a Cat Nap while we
waited
finally heard the Welcoming sound of "day check" (Day Shift) wandering
in....

Now it was a hot meal, a hot shower, and finally off to our racks now
once pass-down
was done and we all looked forward to it... It had been another
successful night...

I paused to watch the beautiful sight of the afterburners taking off
into the dawn...
I always loved that sound... and still do even to this day...

Tired and weary we talked little as we trudged to the chow tent to grab
a hot meal
We ate our meals and got cleaned up and had all settled down in our
racks...

We were just beginning to drift off.....

KABOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

What the He**!?

OHHHH SNAP!!!

Our Racks Bounced 6 to 8 inches from the force of the Impact!
Holy S*** that was close! We Blinked and everyone was in
Chemical protective gear! (To this day I don not remember getting in
it...)
The Ugly truth of the possibility of those warhead carrying Chemical
weapons
Had been drilled into all of us... We screamed warnings of incoming fire
to all
as we grabbed our weapons and heading to the nearest Bunker... where
there was one...
There were usually more... and Today was no different... As we soon
found out...
the Air Raid Sirens on the based Now Blared to warn of the incoming fire
that had already arrived... Sometimes... they got through... This had
been one of those times...

We watched each other close for signs of any type of reaction...
The worst thing about Scud Missiles...

You can't shoot Back...

We sat in silence as we listened to the Patriots missiles fire off in
rapid succession...
1...2...3...4...5...6... A full bank... That's not good... We As the
PRC-90 Chattered
And the Radio talked of more than on Missile intercepted over Dhahran...

They were never headed there... we KNEW where they were really going...
So we listened... and Waited... That was always the hardest part... *The
waiting...
Finally the all clear was sounded as the NBC
And EOD Teams confirmed... No Chemical weapons in the warheads...
After everything settled down and we got everything sorted out...
and everyone got back to the Operations we looked at the Time...
Aww Nuts! It was 1600... Time to head back to work... So it was Chow
again and Back to the
Flight lines... The Troops need air support and they were counting on
us...
And we would be there... We always were...

It would be another night of No sleep, and Cat nap's against the
tires...
and if you are lucky to get there first...maybe a nap on the Conex boxes
again...
It is very true what they always say...

War is hell.

Please Take a Moment this Veterans Day
to Thank a Veteran.

Freedom has a taste
that only those who have fought for it...
Can truly understand...

Semper Fidelis.
(Always Faithful)

As a veteran myself, its always nice to see alittle appreciation for the otherwise thankless job I know that so many great people do everyday.

It was a honor to serve, and I thank those who serve now for their dedication and duty.

~Gulp~ 7 year Air Force Veteran, (1989-1996) just saw this pic (still at work) and a huge fat tear just rolled down my eye... (okay 3 or 4 did). You have no idea how much this is appreciated, by me and my family which has had a member in the service for 4 generations. I will try like heck to be on at 8pm EST Thelanis to salute my brothers past, present and future.

Dang, still teary eyed...

Will it still be at the Temple of SH? I've never joined a guildchat so not sure how.. but any that want to add "Heidiann" and tell me where to go, I'd be honored beyond words to show my reverence.

*edit* just a warning if y'all do that salute thing.. I'm logging off of Voice Chat, cuz no one wants to hear a 39 year old man blubber...

Greetings All...

I just wanted to say that once again this Year
I will be doing my Veterans day moment of Silence event.

I have Updated my OP to provide the Details.

http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=211536

Thank you to All the Veterans for doing what you do.

And Thank to all the veterans who have give their last full measure of
devotion and service to their country.

Marking Veterans Day online within DDO is a very good idea.
At first seemed strange, but not really when you think about it. If we observe a two minute silence at our places of work or while shopping on the day, why not during our Gaming time as well.

Each November 11th here in the UK we stop to respect those who fought and died for us, here it is called Remembrance Day and at 11am GMT my place of work will stop for 2 minutes silence.

So I would like to offer my support for this, but unfortunately due to the time difference will not be able to attend the event, still been at work at 11am EST. Hopefully you will get a good turn out and glad to see you got a good turn out last year.

The temple of the Sovereign Host is also a very good choice of location for this, as House D chat is normally quiet so less likely to be interupted, just think how hard it would be to attempt this in the Harbour.

Bekki
11-03-2010, 07:15 AM
Thank you KrissonofPark.

It's just my little way to say Thank you.
My work actually happens to observe Veterans Day
on the Thursday prior to veterans day.
(We are given the day off.)

And It was something I thought would be a cool thing to do.
Something for those who maybe couldn't make it to a live event.

I admit I have caught some heat for it in the past but
mostly it has been well received.

So for my fellow Vets... I shall "keep charging!"

/Salute

I know you already know this Bekki, but for the people who gave you **** about this, or people who think its silly...

Little things like this make a big difference to those of in the military, either currently or as veterans. I'm a "sand sailor" with the USMC atm, but I know a guy who got out of the Army and his first civilian job wouldn't let him have the day off for Veteran's Day... talk about lack of appreciation.

I don't care if you don't support current conflicts/administrations or not, if you live in either America or most countries in Europe you owe the freedom and prosperity you enjoy today to the fact that men and women in your country, both past and present, have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.

"Never forget, Alexandros, that this flesh, this body, does not belong to us. Thank God it doesn't. If I thought this stuff was mine, I could not advance a pace into the face of the enemy. But it is not ours, my friend. It belongs to the gods and to our children and those of Lakedeamon a hundred, a thousand years yet unborn. It belongs to the city which gives us all we have and demands no less in requital."
