It seems like the aggressiveness of summoned pets varies wildly. Making some more useful than others. Can anyone give me a quick review of which might be worth picking up? Thanks :)

It's really situational and based on your playstyle. If nothing else, it's an additional meatshield. Higher end ones like dense stone elementals and herzou savages can be very useful. Low-level ones are moderately useful at low levels.

I like 3 of them.
The hellhound makes a good scout and is OK as an attacker at low levels (as a scout--is useful at higher levels--will grab initial agro).
At high levels, I've only ever liked the dense stone elementals (somewhat survivable--and earth grab provides some crowd control) and Herzou (actually do some damage).

for summoning, I think most ppl do not load as a spell but use with clickie (esp for dense stone) or scroll.

earth grab provides auto-crit-hit for melee attacks. It is also useful to us when running low on mana if you have dreamsplitter or high crit-hit melee weapons like heavy picks

My first fighter ever (long deleted) always kept her TR staff around to summon hellhounds. Even though her spot sucked, the hounds would tell me where mobs were :D
