View Full Version : Build advice - should a Sorc multi with 2 Pala?

My thought here is that I'd get my Cha mod score added to my saves, access to all wands without need for UMD, Lay On Hands (which would as of now, be a free 60hp heal for me), +1 to AC and Saves, plus access to the Pala Cha Mod (yeah, it's only a +1, but every point counts, right?). I'd also gain some beefiness in the HP dept, as well as some weap.pro. and BAB so I could carry around a mace or weapon in the event that I had to take down the odd single mob aggro. I'd also gain access to Pala Toughness if I add in the Toughness feat.
I know that I'd ultimately lose access to my lvl20 capstone and access to 2 lvl9 sp slots. Are there any other drawbacks that I should know about? Right now the info all seems to point to a no-brainer for the multi-class.

paladin cha enhancement doesnt stack with sorc; this isn't a very good idea, your umd will be high enough for wands with little effort, and the spell loss is considerable, as well as losing 2 levels worth of spell damage dice.

This build can work well. The main reason to do this is the crazy boost to saves. It increases survivability a good bit.
You'll need to consider your playstyle in deciding whether to do this or not. If survivability isn't an issue for you because of other tactics (or you don't mind an occasional death from a failed save), this might not be for you. I'd consider this an advanced build to get it down while minimizing the impact on sorc capabilities.

I should also point out that the full advantages of this build are realized in end-game, elite gaming--where the saves matter most. If you aren't focused on such gaming, the cons may over-weigh the pros.

I had a 14 sorc/2 pally (Sorcadin) for a while. It was fun at low levels, but once I got him and my pure sorc capped, I couldn't see the advantages in the way they played.
Wand usage: Too slow at high levels. Both builds ended up UMD'ing Heal Scrolls.
Saves: Both builds seemed to only fail on a 1.
Melee: Both builds used spells at high levels, and got little value out of melee.
I thought about saving the Sorcadin and adding 2 levels of monk for evasion once the cap was raised. Unfortunately, the additional hit to the spell casting department was too much for me to deal with, so I deleted the Sorcadin. The Sorc also got the hit, however.
If you're interested in the Sorc/Pally battlecaster, I direct you to this excellant thread.

Giving up access to the capstone, 2 level 9 spells, 250+ spell points, and 2DC on your spell penetration attemps, is an insanely bad tradeoff.
60 HP....That's like 2 or 3 potions, no big deal. A sorc should have no problem getting enough UMD to wand whip themselves. The UMD option also opens up heal scrolls and restoration scrolls that pali doesn't give you.
pali and sorc chr can't be stacked so it doesn't help you.
If you want to swing a weapon when low on sp (or just for the heck of it), tensors transformation or a devine power clickie will do that for you.
The <20hp you gain from pali will rarely save your life at end game unless you are a really low con build.
Very few sorcs have AC worth anything by mid levels so +1 AC won't help you.
During levelling you will get your spells 2 levels late each time, meaning during low and mid levels you will be much less helpful to your party.

Very good point. What is a good Save in normal content may disappoint you in the hardest the game has to offer.
With the promise of epic levels, this could become even more important... the increase in survivability could easily outweigh the cons to such a build.

Personally I think the loss of 1 8th level spell, 2 9th level spells, 2 points of spell pen, the loss of the capstone (for when they fix it), and the loss of damage dice for high end spells far out weigh the benefits of the + to saves and the LoH.
