Black dragon scales are only found in the Gianthold Tor quest, in the Gianthold adventure pack. If you're f2p, you're gonna have to pay. If you're VIP, you need to complete the prereqs for the quest: Crucible, Madstone, and Prison of the Planes, as well as turning in 20 relics each of Dragon, Giant, and Elven variety to Crag.

As for a lot of questions, it's normally better to put them all into one post so we can just address all of them in one go.

in the gianthold tor adventure (lv 14) you must have done prison of the planes, crucible, and madstone cratar(all lvl 14) and collect 20 of each type of relic elf, dragon and giant, elf drop in crucible, dragon in prison of the planes, and giant in madstone crater.

And then you need to run the Tor quest a bazillion times. The scales don't drop every time. You need 25 to make blackscale armor. So it may take 50-100 runs to get them (or more). A common approach is to find some, trade for some, and buy some. It takes a long time to get 25 by yourself. If you want black, but not blue--a good option is to trade your blues for blacks--you can usually get 2-5 blacks for each blue.

Great Info..I own that pack. now for the running a bazillion times. Will this require an amazing crew of 6 each time or can say two peeps with 2 lvl approp hirelings do this?

*EDIT* and how long do "runs" take on averaged if not fully zerged.. I do enjoy a normal pace. TY

If you're looking for black, it won't take a bazillion runs. Black is the least sought after color, so unless you got really bad rolls for the other two scales, you're going to be able to trade for them. Like was said earlier, 1 blue scale will get you 3-5 blacks. And I'd bet that 1 white scale will get you 1-2 blacks.

This quest doesn't really require 6 people to do, though most groups will wait for it. I've commonly duoed this quest with my cleric and wizard. (Hi Juni!!) It really depends on what you have and what you need. Clr hierlings won't be the best in here, honestly.

The quest itself takes about 20-25 minutes. Each dragon requires an additional 15 minutes or so. For non-zerged running. I'll do the beginning in 15 and each dragon in another 8-10, so....

~shakes head~ d-d-d-d-did she say Dragons!! we have to fight actual dragons .. I was assuming they were just loot items from like dragon worshipping peeps.. ooooh I'm so excited.. having three sub lvl 7 toons haas me pretty much sick of Harbor and under quests ... need my son and friends to lvl up as fast as me so we can start doing those cooller loot worthy dungeons. I swear I almost ran someone off the road yesterday because I thought he looiked like a Kobold Shaman!!

I've mostly done PUGs for those quests.. so I assumed I'd need "better" groups for these instances, then again I could be better myself.

THANKS for the INFO! ~doing my very own irresistable dance~

The quality of the players/builds makes a big difference in Tor. Well played characters using the right tactics make this a fairly easy 2-man (one healer highly recommended and one damage dealer--caster works great, but could be any dps; can go without healer if the characters can self heal). With bad tactics or bad players, a 6 man run can be tough.

You have to kill a juvenile white, blue, and black dragon with their accompanying giant shepherd. It's only from these three chests that the scales can be pulled.

And you'll want to be lvl 13 before you start trying. They're tough.

That sounds like good advice for most things DDO.. I know my Paladin build isn't... Uber.. My sorcerer is much better.. but stuck with 28 points for awhile and am better researched. so I'll shoot for a decent 4-man team with 2 hirelings to fill gaps.. or pray for good 6 man teams in the PUG world.

My cleric with Juni's wizard do it all the time. Tactics change, of course, if it's a melee. I could probably solo this with Insene if you didn't have to have two people for the skellie.

Gianthold Tor is a fun quest to hit on Normal and is reasonably easy up to the dragons, who do put up a fight.

That said, it's too tough for Hirelings, IMO. They have a habit of being too squishy.

On Khyber, you frequently see high level groups (17-20) running it - these will kill your XP, of course. As well, you can post up a lower level LFM, but I'd recommend 14-17 - that will cost a bit of XP, but the run will be smoother.
