View Full Version : Tome/Attribute Questions
Hi, If my lvl 3 pally has a base wisdom of 10, and I use a +1 wisdom trinket to make it 11, can I cast spells at level 4? I read that I have to have 11 wisdom to cast any spells. If my base wisdom has to be 11, I guess I'll have to put one point in wisdom at lvl 4, right? Or should I put it in strength, where I would rather put it, to help my melee damage? Are tomes worth buying at the store?
On same note, I have 16 base Dex, but need 17 Dex at level 6 to get ITWF, will +1 dex gloves (ie) let me take ITWF or do I have to "eat" a tome by then? Thanks...:o

Stat boosting items DO allow you to qualify for spells (So base wisdom of 10 for paladin/ranger is actually a good starting point, since you'd need to be level 5 to get a +2 item anyway). So yes, you can use a +1 wisdom item to cast first level spells (DOn't expect to actually have enough spellpoints to do it, though. Heh. might wanna pick up a "power" item for an unused slot >_>)
Stat boosting items DO NOT affects your ability to meet prerequisites for feats and enhancements. A +1 dex item will NOT allow you to get Improved Two Weapon Fighting. Tomes, on the other hand, will. If you can gain a +1 dex tome and "eat" it, you will be all set. 17 is also the requirement for Greater TWF, so its a double bonus.

Mostly item based bonuses do not count when figuring out if you make the cut for a feat or the such.
Tomes however do permanently add to the stat so do count.
So no putting not +1 dex gloves before leveling up will not let you take a feat you could not with out the gloves.
As a side same rule on skill points. Putting on a plus Int item before leveling up will not give you more skill points.

interesting. Turbine must have made the change for one of their "house rules" cause it dont work that way for PnP.

Bound tomes:
+4 from Tower of Despair
+3 from Shroud, Reaver's Fate, A Vision of Destruction, Hound of Xoriat, Accursed Ascension
+2 from Vault of Night, Titan Awakes, Against the Demon Queen, 1750 favor
Unbound tomes:
+2 from quests lvl 17+
+1 from quests level 8+

Stats from items did not allow you to fulfill prerequisites in PnP either, just like casting Polymorph didn't let you qualify. If your DM let you do this, that was his/her own house rule.

+2 tomes are the highest avilable tradable items; +3 tomes can occur in most high-end raids, and the new, highest level raid has dropped a +4 tome. +3 and +4 tomes are bound to character when looted and cannot be traded excpet in the chest, so they are usually given over to classes who the tome's the main/critical attribute for. Eg, int tomes go first to rogues and wizards (typically, there are exceptions), charisma tomes to pal/bard/sor, strength to non-finesse melee, etc.

i know stats dont work in PnP for feat pre-req. Bernie said +stat items let you cast higher level spells in DDO, which is not the case in PnP ;) +stat only helped spell save DC's

Why do people always call me "bernie" half the time? In every MMO I've ever played, half the people call me bernie (And the other half assume I'm a girl).
I swear, if I hadn't been using Brennie as my default gaming psydonym for well over 10 years, I'd throw my hands up and change my name to "Tony"

I'm not a D&D expert, but back when DDO launched, this was discussed quite a lot, and the self-proclaimed experts confirmed it was working like that in PnP as well.

It does. Read the fine print.

OK, I read the excellent post above regarding where to get various tomes. Thank you for that.
Would someone be so kind as to let me know how tomes work?
I'm sure it works something like one of these scenarios:
* Use multiple tomes of various increments to reach up to +4. (Two +1 tomes = +2)
* A better tome overwrites a lesser one. (+2 tome overwrites a +1 tome)
* Use one of each - +1, +2, +3 and +4 tomes for a total stat increase of +10.
Also, what is the difference between a "bound" and "unbound" tome?
:confused:

the second one is how it works.

Bound means locked to character (or in some cases account) IE you can not trade it to others.
Unbound is everything else ... free to trade as you please.
