New Monk

Hey, I recently started playing, and just managed to buy a monk :)
I was wondering whether anyone could give me advice or a template on how to play the monk i want, before i go and muck it up ;)
I was thinking of a Dwarven pure monk using a Quarterstaff. Would this be viable/possible to create? Are there any builds like this already or am i going to have to make it up as i go?

Any advice would be appreciated ;)

It should work, but be aware that monk weapons aren't particularly impressive damage-wise (this is true with both weapons and fists), and overall the staff is less effective than bare fists (assuming you'd take the twf feats with fists, and the thf feats with staff). Also, there are a few monk special attacks, like stunning fist and quivering palm, that work only when fighting with fists.
The Path of Shadow is the pre-made build that would probably fit your needs best, but it does not exactly do that, so you'd be better making your own build.

I can't add much other than to say that the first monk I built (and really the only one)
was a staff wielding dwarf monk.

I can't exactly remember how high I got him - but it was to around 12 or maybe 14. He was adequate - although I never build "uber" characters as I get bored and re-roll alot (and thus never got a 32pt build or alot of very uber gear). He had very good hp and fantastic saves...his AC and dmg output could have been better.

So, that being said - it will be fun to play - but it won't be the most effective.
Chances are though that if you are a new player your first toon will have many mistakes...so why not just make him if you like the idea... then you will understand first hand where some of the mechanics better come into play.

The staff animations are really interesting for fighting. The staff, however, will do less damage than fists eventually. Still it is a Two-Handed weapon which will have glancing blows. I am wondering how much the THF feats will help that out. In Fire Stance you should build up a lot of Ki quickly for use on the Monk attacks and finishing moves.

Tyvm for the advice, i think i will maybe roll my own character and try to just make some stuff up as i go along, just to get the feel of it and then hopefully fine-tune a build to suit my needs ;)
