About how much play time does it take to do everything? I want to get a general idea on how big the game is. I've been looking for a game thats lighter than wow yet still has enough content to keep me entertained anytime I feel like playing.
I'm having a lot of fun so far but wondering if lack of expansions could keep this from becoming my regular game once I complete everything.

Been here 3 years, still haven't done everything.
Granted, there are some things I don't want to do though...
If you were really dedicated you could blow through the content in a couple of months, but that's just content.
In DDO, you can expect to run each quest at least 3 times with each character.
Some of my raid counters are over 80 completions.
Just by subscribing, you have access to 60 character slots on 6 servers...
And I wouldn't expect a new player to 'complete' everything in their first year playing.

If you only want to play 1 character through the content and you don't like replaying content, you can probably see everything but some top end raids in a few hundred hours (2-10 months depending on play time).
However, if you like trying different builds this game has a lot. Playing as a rogue, barb, cleric or sorcerer are quite different. Get into multi-class and there is a lot of things to try out. Altaholics who have played since 2006 have not experienced everything.

It all depends on what you mean by 'having done everything'.
You can cap off a character in 40 hours. Or you can take it easy and enjoy all the low xp quests and optionals. you could take months.
Then spend months repeating the same dull raids 80 times to get the perfect equipment. There's a timer on the raids, so that will take you a while. It totally depends on luck also. You could get the perfect three runes for super-armor on your first try. That happened to me once! Or you could theoretically hunt forever and never get it perfect.
Or you could start all over again with a new character. The basic character types are limited: DPS, tank, utility fighter, sneak attacker, ranged, healer, something in between a fighter and a healer, crowd control, offensive caster, buffer, haggle-bot. Within each of these basic categories, there are several subflavors. Two types of DPS for example, that play very differently. Once you start multiclassing, the options are myriad. An evasion paladin really is a very different play experience to straight Paladin, at least to me.
Then you start mixing six toons in a group. A group with a bard plays very different to one without. A group with a total noob plays very different. Etc. You could be playing Water Works for the 500th time and have something you have never seen happen.
I just moved to a new server after two years, and realizing thing are very different here. I guess that's why I've stuck with DDO for a long time. I keep seeing new stuff and still improving my game.
