I want to know how to turn this function off, if it is possible. It is really bothersome and makes me think of all the other games in which that function does not exist or can be turned off.

No this can not be turned off.

They just fixed this feature and it is WAI. It's to keep people who aren't doing anything from cluttering up the game.
If you log out to the Character Selection screen there's a longer timer before the Client auto shuts down.

The only thing you can do is lengthen it. F2P get the shortest time, Premium get a little longer, VIP tops out at 1 hr.

I understand, but it takes me freakin' 10 min. to get it started again. I guess the real reason they're doing this is for just another feature that improves with membership payment. No other MMO seems to worry about afk characters at all! Maybe they're just wealthier than these guys, or maybe these guys are expecting a TON of players to join the game...lol.

No, they did this to allow other players to play. From what I understand, when the servers have a max number of players, the computer will then put anyone trying to log in into a queu. When a player logs out, the next player in queu logs in. I have yet to see a max number of players to where a queu would have been utilized, but its in place if the need should arise.

Interesting point of note: Biggest MMO in the world (subscriber base...), World of Warcraft, automatically logs you out at 30 minutes. So someone who's paying for DDO has double the time to be AFK without being auto logged out, and there's no way to lengthen or stop that time in WoW either.

City of Heros is the only other MMO I know, and it has a log out timer of 15 minutes, though that doesn't apply inside a mission, just in outside public areas and on a handful of "special" missions in the game (task forces) you are also immune from the log off timer. And autorunning there won't prevent it, its looking for keystroke entries.

How long is the timer for a F2P account by the way? And if you are booted out of the quest that way, does the next time you go in count against your "times run" for XP penalties?

Also, in WoW and CoH, you get logged back to the character screen. When I started playing DDO I thought it was crashing since if I left the room to do anything, I would come back to a blank desktop with no indication. With other games, you just select a character and jump right back in.
