View Full Version : Thoughts From a New Guy

Hello everyone,
As a new player of 3 weeks, I thought I would take this time to share some thoughts, ask some advice, and try to meet some people
First, who the heck am I?
Lets see, I'm a veteran of D&D the PnP for 25 years now, and have been playing various MMO's since 2004. I brought a few friends with me and so far we have been having a grand time. It took me all of a week as a Free to Play member to realize how well this game has been put together before I upgraded to VIP. I am not a typical MMO player, I rarely use abbreviations, I do not use "lol" as punctuation, and I do not like to rush as since I am paying for this game I would like to enjoy it.
Comments
First of all, you win Thelanis. From what I have experienced you are the best server to call home. For the most part your veterans are helpful and friendly (there are a few bad apples, but but not enough to spoil the cliche'). To the vets who have been kind enough to show us the ropes: Thank you.
The game has a wonderful tendency not to spoon feed me, which I can see driving away the players who expect everything to be handed them just for showing up. In fact, I can see the majority of these players being driven away by dungeons and adventures that require thought and team work (don't fear their loss Turbine, this are the ones who would have never paid a penny anyway).
A suggestion to the Vets from a new player: I understand there are farm runs in this game, and I can see the need, but please say so. First time through an adventure I want to be awed by ambushes, terrified by traps, and
enthralled by encounters. Telling me where everything is kind of sucks the joy out of it and makes me feel like a hireling more than a party member.
To New Players, three things:
The Compendium is your friend...: Hit "P" and you'll find what quests are in your level, where they are, and who gives them.
...The Map is a better friend...: You should learn to use it ASAP. This will save wear and tear on the general channel, as well as move things along faster.
...But you will want to sleep with the Pawn Shops.: There's a group of 5 in the market place, a higher-end armor pawn shop in House Kundarak, and a higher-end weapon pawn shop in House Deneith.
Questions
I'm looking for a guild. What I would like is adventuring RP (I like my RP in the dungeon, not the tavern). Does anyone know of such a thing?
Barring that I would like an active, mature guild. Any hiring?
Any suggestions on where we should go for levels 5-6?
Do the hirelings keep getting less efficient as I go up in level?
When does the action house become a useful tool rather than a way for folks to gouge money?
Well, if you hit this line it means you read the whole thing. Thank you for your time and in advance for any advice, and I look forward to running into you some time in game.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Thelanis. :)
The thing to do here is to put up your own LFM and state 1st timer and no Zerging. If I know ahead of time I will drop back and just flow with the quest, trying to keep everyone alive, etc. as they enjoy the newness of them.
I remember a very sweet Halfling RPer named Dalharil took my ranger under her wing and taught me some very nice tactics, so always try and repay that when I can.
I'm looking for a guild. What I would like is adventuring RP (I like my RP in the dungeon, not the tavern). Does anyone know of such a thing?
Barring that I would like an active, mature guild. Any hiring?
Guilds are all different, a lot of them will want to run with you a bit to see if you blend in with them.
The days of Smokey's Guild are gone. *sniff, sniff* I loved those guys, giving guild invites as soon as you appeared in the newbie zone, the drama they created, the epic fails. *sighs* BUT I did see a guild spamming the other day to just send a tell and they would put you in guild! So maybe Smokeys is coming back!
Anyway, What I would recommend you do is to check out the RP guilds, OSR is a good group of folk, have run with a few of them and they are easy going, fun and some quality players. I think the RP Chat channel is "Stormwatch". SO just /joinchannel stormwatch ( /leavechannel stormwatch to leave).
Then you have to decide - what do you want to get out of the game? We have it all. Elite guilds, Role players, Casual, permadeath, etc. Just need to figure out what you want and then try to hook up with the guilds that match.
Any suggestions on where we should go for levels 5-6?
The houses have great quests that level. Some can be brutal for new players, but you will enjoy them. If you have VIP or adventure packs - 3 barrel cove is fun, Tangle Root is almost a must have and a group can start and do Sorrowdusk.
Do the hirelings keep getting less efficient as I go up in level?
I was unaware they were ever efficient. :)
When does the action house become a useful tool rather than a way for folks to gouge money?
mid to high levels, when you start pulling nice gear and have some cash.
Well, if you hit this line it means you read the whole thing. Thank you for your time and in advance for any advice, and I look forward to running into you some time in game.
Currently bouncing between a few characters, if you see Xiradun on (new reroll 8th level Ranger) give a shout, or send a tell to Rhadae my Monkalicious Monk. I will gladly try and group with ya if I am not in the middle of anything. :)

First off, Hi and welcome :D
I'll answer your questions to the best of my abilities.
I'm looking for a guild. What I would like is adventuring RP (I like my RP in the dungeon, not the tavern). Does anyone know of such a thing?
Barring that I would like an active, mature guild. Any hiring?
I would suggest looking under the Thelanis Guild List (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=116330) thread. It's more or less up to date and may give you an idea of the guild you're looking for. There's a number of guild recruiting atm.
Some of them might even respond to you here. :)
Any suggestions on where we should go for levels 5-6?
If you're an F2P, then the house quests are your friend. Running stuff in House K and Gwylans in House P will be a good way to get some xp.
If you don't mind buying a pack or 2, I would suggest Deleras and Sorrowdusk.
Do the hirelings keep getting less efficient as I go up in level?
I've never found hirelings very useful. They die easily in higher level quests.
My first experience with them was having a lvl 16 cleric come with me to pull levers while I was soloing Deleras for my Voice of the Master. The cleric got destroyed by the cr 3 archers
When does the action house become a useful tool rather than a way for folks to gouge money?
The auction house is a terrible place to shop. You might find some good deals, but most of the time it's a chore to pour through pages looking for something. If they included some search features it would be more useful.
If you do want to use it, since you're running lower level some collectibles sell real well, for example Lightning Split Soarwood, Prophecy of Khyber
Your best bet is to look at the weapon/armor brokers in House D/K. Barring that use the trade forums here and you'll get better deals.
Most vets will help out new players by giving them some plat and stuff. Just need to ask politely ;)

Welcome to Thelanis! If you see any of my characters around feel free too ask for advice. None of them are in your level range, but can answer general questions.
Tangleroot - House P
Depths quests - House D (first tavern you come to in house D)
Delera's - House J
Some of the House K quests
These should keep you busy until level 7,8, or even 9.
Then - Stormcleave Outpost (house D)
Greymoon/Cult of the 6 (house D, it's listed as Sorrowdusk Isle)
Good Hunting!

For RP guilds search for the word "role" in the stickied guild list in the thelanis guilds subforums.
The AH is useful to sell items from the start (but it's sometimes hard for new players to know what's worth auctioning).
In order to buy good stuff on the AH, you probably won't have enough money for it (except for the rare really good deals) until you start making money, which happens around L8+ in my experience.

Very well constructed thoughts.
I have played many online games, DDO is one of the best. The only downfall for me, as a serious MMORPG player is the lack of new stuff. That said I have left and come back 2 times now. I, harbor no bad feelings I have known Turbine since AC1 and know they do alot with with they have. DDO is one of the best online games I've ever been part of.
Good Luck to you and enjoy your time in game.

Congratulations. You should feel lucky to have landed in a server that so closely fits your playstyle.
Just so you know, had you begun on Argo, we probably would have ended you...

Thelanis's greatness is achieved solely through the huge influx of Xorians brought about by Turbine's attemtped genocide some time back. However the folks from those other two servers aren't so bad either, once you get them away from the flutterbys.
Oh, and Stay away from bartcom. he likes to hang around the Leaky Dinghy in a rain coat.

Best thing I can tell you about this is communicate. Read the LFM's. Most will put in fast runs, or zerg, or loot, or no complete/no xp/no favor. If they don't, when you join the group let it be known what you want. Some will accomodate, some will let you know this might not be the group for you, most will be polite. On occasion you will get an ass who will go on a rage. Sometimes they are nice people pushed too far that day, sometimes they are just an ass.
I'm looking for a guild. What I would like is adventuring RP (I like my RP in the dungeon, not the tavern). Does anyone know of such a thing?
There are guilds for every playstyle on this guild. Some good, some bad. Generally, the good guilds are harder to get into than the not so good guilds. Best thing is to just play. Your name will get around and people will notice. It will take a while. You should look over your guild as much as they look over you. You will find the one for you.
Do the hirelings keep getting less efficient as I go up in level?
Don't get me started. Its a good idea, but Turbine really needs to spend a little dev time on them.
When does the action house become a useful tool rather than a way for folks to gouge money?
The auction house does a lot of things. Keep looking. Just like garage sales/pawn shops there are great deals in there with all the high priced stuff. Not all high priced stuff is meant to sell. There are people who put things in there at a ridiculous price to store them for 72 hours. If your in a hurry to get to a run, don't have time to shuffle toons to make bank space, it can be a life saver. I have been suprised a time or two at items that sell for prices so stupidly high that no one should have ever bought them.
Well, if you hit this line it means you read the whole thing. Thank you for your time and in advance for any advice, and I look forward to running into you some time in game.
Welcome to the game.

HEY!!! Why does that Tharashk gets thrown to the wayside??? The only reason Xoriats tolerated all those RP THelanis people is the fact we were there as buffers!!!

Hi there,
Always glad to see more new players.
Rowanheal has an awesome list of quests it tells you what is free to play, and if it's not, what adventure pack you need to buy. Also, in answer to your question of what quests are good for your level, this list will tell you what level, favor and xp everything is, where to pick up the quest, and where to enter. You can add me to your friends list, and feel free to ask questions when you see me on :)

Barring that I would like an active, mature guild. Any hiring?
I am a part of CoFR (Crusty Old Fossil Rockers). We have a guild in DDO, on the Thelanis server.
CoFR started out as an international gaming group of people 21+ years of age, who prefer maturity, respect, and helpfulness, about 10 years ago. We started out playing Counter-Strike (the original) back in the day.
I am currently the guild leader. Character's name is "Koredd".
I, too, try not to use acronyms, shorthand, and "l337" speak when chatting, etc. Some of us even try to Role Play.
If you are interested, send me a tell in the game sometime.
Here are some links to more info about us:

Welcome to Thelanis.
Just to answer your questions about where to level: (although I think most have been covered)
Tangleroot gorge
Deleras
House D "Depths" quests.
House D "The bounty Hunter" quest in anvilfire inn
House J Mirras sleepless nights and redwillow's ruins (Also lightfoot estate if you are looking to get ****ed off)
Forgot the name of the tavern, but House K, almost dead center. 4 quests there.
House P Tavern to the left - 3 quests there. Also if you have a group with ANYONE who knows what they are doing, tear of Drakhan is probably the best level 7 quest IMO.
Necropolis part 1
WW on hard/elite will still be decent xp till level 7 or so.
3 barrel cove, although I dont care for it, has quite a few quests in the 4-7ish range
Sorrowdusk slayers/rares/landmarks (Id save the quest chain for a bit higher)
Archers point defense (harbor)
Hope that gets you going.
