View Full Version : Gnarkill The Destroyer of Everything

Hi there, my friend and I recentely decided to play through the Dungeon known as "The Waterworks" on Shipwreck Island (I think that's the name) and while doing the Rare encounters quest, we ran into something that was quite unordinary. I believe the monster's name is "Gnarkill"? Well, none the less we got to (encounter) him to the fullest. What's special about this stupid thing, is it has the ability to regenerate it's heal to max in less than 2 seconds of entering combat and not only that, but the thing does so much damage, that we practically die withing seconds of attempting to kill him. Now, normally I wouldn't go out of my way to make a forum topic with absolutely no point to it other than complaining. But if you could please explain to me what in god's name you were thinking about when you created this thing, I would deeply appreciate it. Infact, to show you EXACTLY what I'm talking about, I compiled a little video presentation for you.

Here is the link:

Enjoy, and please. Tell me what you think of this.

Yea... Im SERIOUS

2 bits of advice...

trolls and fire

and second:
When the two level one adventurers see the big bad monster (CR4)... maybe part of adventuring is knowing when to run? :D

We eventually end up killing him (in the video) . However , I think someone/something should've warned us about that thing *cough* Narrator *cough*

First of all, it's hilarious.

Second, I mostly like a video of ten minutes where you have zero health.

Third - how much fun was just this one mob - challenge is fantastic. ;)

Eventually this encounter will become easy and you will look back and laugh.

Holy **** that was funny... I love the end

"I died... three times... for a chain shirt and some money."

:)

So, as you have no doubt learned, trolls regenerate. Fire/Acid is your friend when dealing with trolls. :)

Interesting video. It shows you and rogue at about 8 hit points each going up against a troll. A low level ranger and a rogue vs a Troll. A Troll that can, by all means, be completely avoided.

What were you thinking...? At that level, even pure tank fighters would be weary of a troll.

Also, I noted that you didn't use the handy little fire trap set in the area specifically to help deal with the Troll.

My suggestion? Bring a Wizard, Sorcerer, or Cleric next time, and use that trap.

This game sometimes requires strategies other than "Charge!" =)

That is part of it's beauty.

I loved how you thought you were all safe in that shrine only to find him on TOP of the door! haha! You're lucky he glitched up there :)

Next time try to kill him in his room, there's a little trick to it, don't pull him out of there.

Also, whenever (if ever...) you go to Ataraxia's Haven or Three Barrel Cove and see blueish trolls, please record another video :D

Any vet watching that vid. would know you the door simply didn't close on time for the door to register "fully closed" before the troll was registered "fully on the other side of the door"

Oh wow there's more trolls? Seriously, as if incredible hulk wasn't enough. The only reason I recorded this video was because I thought this was an in-game error. I mean, they couldn't have POSSABILY thought this was a fair fight lol.

But yea, NOW everyone tells me there's a trap in the room. Im suprised Killon didn't notice it after he tried to trip the thing and failed.

Oh yeah, there's a LOT more trolls in the game, even a special kind that's harder to kill and a named one that smacks you so hard you just can't resist the urge to dance :D

Actually, now that everyone gets the choice of a fire touch weapon right out of the first tutorial quest, this guy is much easier. The trap was there since at low levels unless you were twinked there was no way to have a fire or acid weapon. It's off to the side of the room, Killon would not have seen it while sneaking up on him.

Considering the size of that thing, and you guys being low lvl fellers... that fight was more then fair =P

Isnt that the charm with the game? how about you and ur buddy arm yourself with a bow and a dagger, and go on a bear chase or somthing, pretty much the same thing id say.. would be more realistic if the bear were armed though... and that would be completely awsome....

Bears with bows...... =P

Well actually, since youtube only allows 10 minutes of video and we recorded about an hour, there was some parts cut out. At one point, Hockey DID use diplomacy, however, after about 2 minutes of calling a truce, Gnarkill decided to betray his "promise" and beat hockey to a pulp.

I was probably a little rough in my first assesement. Although I wouldn't want to group with you two, you seem to be having a lot of fun and that's really what it comes down to.

It's probably been said, but you can take that troll down pretty easy by applying a little fire or acid damage. It will stop his regeneration. If you don't have fire weapons, there's a convieneintly placed fire trap inside his lair. With a little practice, you can hose the Troll with it. DDO isn't that hard but it does occasionally ask you to think and explore alternate ways of succeeding. Good luck you two.

Is that working now for certain? A while ago I experimented with trolls in various places and watched them regen after taking fire & acid damage.

It's Blair Witch Project 2.0!

This critic gives it two thumbs up. While it retains the low budget, shaky hand-held camera, and similar dialogue to the original, this version has a great comic value and a sense of fun. :)

Thorzian

"either this thing can't be killed or it's like, gliched or something"

i was laughing way hard at that one.

killing a troll is an easy formula- cause more damage then it regenerates while having enough hp to live through it's damage. a low level rogue and ranger are just not the best choice for this.

Kalari

Is that working now for certain? A while ago I experimented with trolls in various places and watched them regen after taking fire & acid damage.

If you examine a troll after you hit them with fire/acid damage, you'll see they have the "Vulnerable" effect - this means you've stopped their regeneration. Not sure what the timer on it is, but it goes away after a little bit and they start healing back up again.

This was awesome!

I miss that feeling I had when I was first playing through this game, and encountered the likes of the ogres in WW, this troll, the trog caster in Butcher's, the skeleton caster across the rafters, the WF Titan, Velah, my first beholder, the Tor dragons... That giddiness at your own death.

I always carry a bit of mourning around inside me for the loss of innocence that comes with learning a game, whether we're talking about DDO, D&D, Magic the Gathering, Final Fantasy, whatever...

I hope you guys continue to really enjoy yourselves playing this game!

Just remember to check out the CR on a monster before you rush in. While not always the case, if the CR is a few levels above your own, beware! Also, ogres and trolls should always be approached with caution--they hit hard!

Thanks a ton! There's been plenty of other times we got feared... literally too. We just did the "Kill 200 Kobolds" quest on Shipwreck the other day and that was just as annoying. Waves of Kobold Shaman spamming fear on us... Still gives me nightmares.

Would I boot them from my groups? If they were high leveled players displaying such attitudes in a raid, yes I would reform the party. However, these two 'school girls' as you call them, are not. In the past few weeks I devoted at least 2 nights a week to run my lowbie. I'll come across a number of new players. Some of them, like this two, have no dnd background at all. During my runs instead of calling them names, I discuss with them some of the strategies

What have you done?

Definitely.

Some of the most fun I've had in this game was on my first character (rogue) during the first few weeks after release, when most groups were mortally terrified of running ahead of the rogue, and I was almost equally (but silently) terrified of not spotting the next trap.

New quests can kind of bring back that feeling the first time through, but not as powerfully.

that was a great video. loved it.

i remember that troll the first time. i wandered in that room for the very first time with my rogue, and i saw it and thought, WAHOO A RARE. I snook up behind it and it died instantly with a swing of my rapier, and then my club. i thought "oh that was easy". Then i walked around the room, and wondered what the trap was for, and thought "hmm maybe this guy should be harder to kill if that is what the trap is for".

The next time I was in waterworks and i wandered in, I thought for fun i'd lure him into the trap and do it that way, see what happened.

He survived, with no damage and i had to hit him.

That trap is pointless. Backstabbing FTW.

Awsome video guys, really captures the "HS" moments this game can present. Then the fun begins in trying to find a way to kill it/get past it etc. Always remember that traps can be used against the monsters as well.

To those who say they will not group with these 2 guys... remember the game is not only about the destination, the journey to get there is where the entertainment is at.

Late to the party, but this is still hilarious. I made the mistake of encountering him with a dwarf healer cleric solo. I died in a few seconds.

More recently, I encountered him with my drow sorcerer at level 3, I think it was. Spammed Niac's Cold Ray from just outside the door and had a heart-stopper as he died JUST inside the doorway right before he reached swing range. ;)

I remember when I first stumbled into this guy with my lvl 3 char. The moment I spotted him, I thought "OMG, a troll, they have regeneration" (remembering my NWN experiences). Then:

"****, I've thrown away my flaming longsword from Korthos."
"Gosh, they won't put anything insuperable without the appropriate gear into a lvl 3 area, that would just be mean."

5 seconds later: "Oh yes, they would..."

Of course I didn't use the fire trap.
