Armour Item stats/description question

Can anyone explain what the +X number is up in the top right of the armour description?

I was looking for a new robe, and most of the low level ones had a +1 up in the top right of the description. There were a couple with higher numbers, a +2 and a +4. I'd thought it was an AC bonus, but it doesn't look like that's the case as when I change from my beginner robe to the new one, my AC stays the same (as do the rest of my stats as far as I can see).

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

The # is kinda like a quality #.

Example in shround you need to charge cells to use in crafting. The # you speak of is the one that tells you if the weapon if good enough to charge a certain type of cell.
