So I'm attempting to make a rogue 1/bard everything else.

The idea is that I get spot, search, move silently, and disable device with the rogue level, then keep them up cross class as I level in bard, to provide doorfinding, trap disabling, and bardsong/buffs.

My question is, by not having the rogue enhancements, am I going to basically have zero chance of actually finding doors/traps and disabling them? My highest character is level 6, and I really don't know how DCs run.

no, you will be fine.

I'd make sure you have an intell score of 16 base if you plan on being good at traps. go halfling, elf or drow will give you big bonuses to search and spot skills.

What you loose is a little bit on reflex saves vs traps that pure rogues get, you lose maybe about 6 points total from enhancements and pre's (provided the rogue is a way of the mechanic pre rogue, which is not that popular), and improved evasion. What you gain is cc, bufing, focusing chant (awesome spell to add +1 to every skill you have) and healing.

theres probly tons of other stuff you gain to but thats all i can think off the top of my head atm.

oh i'd probly go 2 rogue/rest bard simply so you get evasion. make the 2nd bard lvl at later levels so you can get a catch up to any skills your've being unable to keep up.

the most popular rogue multiclass is 1 rogue/rest ranger but the rogue/bard is also quite popular.

basically the rule i work to when making a rogue is this - "is it important to me to get 100% success on traps?" if the answer is yes then pure rogue is probly the way to go, if no only about 90-95% is ok, then multiclass is for you :)

Thank you. Basically I wasn't sure if I'd wind up with a 50% or worse chance unless full rogue.

Int is 16, so each bard level I get spot/search/disable device/open lock +1 with 1 point left over

So far I've taken force of personality for will saves, and weapon focus, slashing to go towards the warchanter at (my) level 7, for more song bonuses.

From browsing another thread, I'm considering swapping out FoP, when does one start finding tome of dex +1 for TWF line prereqs? As long as my dex is already high (drow) I might as well get the extra point to vastly increase my damage.

Edit: Actually, should I change my weapon focus slashing to piercing? Slashing is better vs. zombies, while piercing has no benefits I can think of, but I'm a drow, so piercing has both rapiers and shortswords, a classic MH/OH combination. Just realized this, and figured I'd see if anyone jumped out that I was missing a great slashing offhand or something.

I'm on Ghallandra. I'll find something, thanks for the offer. I just don't think I've ever gotten high enough to start finding tomes. Won't matter until level 9, since level 6 feat is spoken for as power attack for the warchanter enhancement thingey, and I won't have +6 bab then anyway :-)
