Hey, Im sort of new to the monk class, but I like it so far. The thing is, Im a little confused about outfits. They dont offer protection in the form of armor, but thats okay because I cast mage armor on myself with clickies.
Im level six now, and...what armor should I be wearing?
my ac is
10 base
5 from 20 dex
5 from 20 wis
4 from mage armor
1 from halfling size
1 from dodge feat
so 26 ac standing.
Should I wear outfits of mobility to bring it to 30 when dodging?
in my pack ive got 20 point fire resistance robes, is that what I should slip on?
search for some foritification?

I would look for invulnerability which is 5 DR and quite nice. Also, at level 6 you can look for moderate fortification as well which will reduce your vulnerability to critical attack damage. you can probably find things like elemental resists or guards in combination with those. mobility... meh..

The outfit is pretty situational. Pretty much wear whatever will help you the most for what quest you are on. You should be getting your armor bonus from bracers. Do waterworks a few times till you can get the Black Widow Bracers. They'll give you 4AC, and it won't be dispellable.
There are a few robes and outfits that give an AC bonus as well. Most of the good ones aren't wearable until level 8 or so. Out in the desert is the Vulkoorim(sp?) Dervish Robe. That gives +4 armor AC(but it frees up your bracer slot so if you are Lawful Good you can use Chaosguarde bracers which give +2 dodge AC). Much later on the White Dragonscale Robe is nifty, though a LOT of grinding to put it together(+6 armor AC, +4 prot AC, shield clicky 3/rest, mod fort. and cold resist 30).
Early on though spearblock is handy. Invulnerability is somewhat useful. Outfits with built in SR are nice until you can get your monk built-in SR.

Just to add to this, you should have +2 further AC from being centered if you're pure Monk.
+1 more if you're hasted; and +3 if you quaffed a barkskin potion.
As for outfits, in the early levels I generally go with (1) whatever looks good, and (2) Fortification if I need it, or Invulnerability otherwise.
Once you get to 10ish you'll start finding decent outfits.
I'd try to do Threnal series and pick up a Thanatos weave (has deathblock on it) for your anti-Beholder outfit of choice. Otherwise, there are a few other reasonable options between then and Icy Raiments/Dragontouched Robes/White Dragon Robe levels.
PS - outfits will offer protection in the form of armour. Icy Raiments, White dragon robe, Ironweave robe, etc. are all examples. Note that some will not jive with armored bracers as it's an identical AC type, whereas others (such as Icy's dodge bonus) do stack.

On my level six monk-splash I cycle between the various DR outfits - Hammerblock, Spearblock and Axeblock, as well as fearsome and Gr. Shadow situationally. Those lowbie outfits will probably stay on me until I go farm a DT outfit or Icy Raiment.

id be wary about fearsome, Id rather get hit and hit him back than get hit and have to chase the guy around as he runs away and possibly into another group.
The dragontouched and Icy raiments, are those in Gianthold? or is that just where you bring the white dragon relics for the robes.

Fearsome is situational - it's good in a jam when you're soloing or zerging.
Dragontouched armors are made with runes from Reaver's Reach. The icy raiment is a rare bound item you can find in a certain chest in the Subterrane.
You could look at the relic and dragon scale robe options in Gianthold and see if there was a robe you wanted. The shield clicky can be useful if nothing else.

Shield clicky is nice, due to the annoyance of the never-miss Magic Missile. It doesnt often do enough to really merit me breaking away from helping the tank to go after that caster, but when I see miss miss miss miss miss over my head, and then suddenly
7 force
10 force
9 force
8 force
7 force
I start to grumble...
Ill look for that raiment when the time comes, and Ill take your advice on the other garments too unless anyone has more info to offer me

Dont rule out mod/heavy fort outfits to especially once you start running things out in Gianthold. By level 10 my monk had an acid guard heavy fort outfit, and before that she lucked out and found a min level 7 mod fort outfit. Having a guard against critical hits along with your ac goes a long way.

Ive got a belt of fort on right now, but If I find an outfit of it, Ill probably wear it. Afterall, that will save up a belt slot for something like +constitution :P

at level 8 a heavy fortification robe is critical

Mod Fort is alright until you loot a heavy fort as heavy fort outfits on sarlona go for over a mil. :p

Run black anvil mines, one run is enough to get the heavy fort necklace at level 9, saving myself a robe slot.
Unless I'm power leveling, this is the route I usually take and it works rather well.
(Exception: For Warforged which get heavy fort when you add a medium fort item, I use a min lvl 7 ring or belt, both of which I have in storage)

when you get to 14, icy raiment is the best - also some banishing robes around 16, but then DT is available. check ddowiki.com for more info on all the above.
as a monk, i keep about 10 outfits on my hot bars for situational use: deathblock, resists, etc.
as far as gear recommendations, you should get some AC bracers and str/dex/wis/con items asap. and stick to fists/staves, kamas are horrid dps (unless you need to vorpal or somthing like that)

Unbound Moderate Fort Outfits can be ML:4. So I guess if you’re really lucky on the Waterworks end reward you could get your hands on a BtA ML: 2 outfit.
Unbound Heavy Fort Outfits can be ML: 8. So you would need to be really lucky for a BtA ML: 6

i'd much rather have the neck for the cartouche; no +3 umd robes.

or if you can wait for it ... wait til level 11 , run orchid loot runs collect 20 tapestrys turn them in for a minos legens helm which comes with alot of hitpoint gains and Heavy fort ^ .That would free up your outfit for something else like death block , or invulnerability .... until you farmed an Icy Rainments , then got either the banishing robes outfit from vod , or a solid dragon touched outfit ...
