Quick question. Do we want DDO to survive?

If your answer is yes then we need to accept certain changes they have made in order to generate more revenue to keep the game alive.

If your answer is no, then why are you here anyway?

Anything that gets Turbine more money for development is a good thing.........

BTW, only banner I've seen is the one for this game (So far)

I think the most amusing part about this is I am watching a banner ad right now that is advertising DDO.

Redundancy much?

Also to be clear BOO! on banner adds!

I think the obvious answer is in my thread.

This game is going all F2P, we are getting all those TP's a month for free because when they finally cancel subscriptions at least some of the original base will stick around because they will have TP's left to buy what they once got for free.

Attack speeds were slowed because the big seller in the store is going to be an attack speed booster.

End of story, I hope I am, wrong, but I think I am not.

And if these ads are the only thing between the success and failure of DDO....kill it now and let us move on.

Oh, yes...i'm here because I love D&D (not WoW or any other variation of D&D) and this is the closest i can get to it ...but i don't need to be bombarded with ads that mean nothing to a paying subscriber.

*Sigh*

Yeah... Not unexpected.
Ads are big money for a site that gets a lot of clicks. And we do seem to do a bunch of clicking around here...

*light bulb pops overhead*
Waitasec....

That's why the 'combat change' took place... They knew we'd be clicking up a mad storm of activity to rage about it, blowing click count thru the roof long enough to make numbers to show potential ad clients. Soon as that's done, then we get our change-back, and we can settle back in with only the annoyingly irritating banner ads (and underlying data bugs) to deal with......

(All that tin foil in me hat now. Oh, the Apple jelly jars i coulda made with all that.) :

I'm here to play a game and enjoy myself. DDO's survival is really not my concern. While it's here and I enjoy it I'll play it. Once it's no longer fun I'm gone. If the servers close before I stop enjoying it then oh well. I've managed to live 90% of my life without this game and I've enjoyed most of it.

I, for one, would quit DDO in a heartbeat if I could not keep My Sub. Why would Turbine get rid of a steady revenue stream? It just doesn't make sense.........

I'm not crying DOOOOOM, if they make this an all F2P game it will survive, in fact it may do better, but if u think about it what I say makes sense.

They are clearly looking for more money, I can't see a better way than by slowing down the attacks and putting an item in the store that makes u attack faster.

I just hope it doesn't vanish on death like some of the other F2P games I play.

What doesn't make sense to me is why would Turbine give a steady stream of revenue a reason to save up thier TP's for a few month and then just cancel and have the whole game for free?

Heck, they can take all the time they need to "FIX" iit now, I can just play my other games that are actually honest upfront about stuff instead of using these stealthy tactics, and when I get the urge to experience DDO just log on for free and play.

Really, I hope I am wrong, I wanna be wrong in this case, but DDO is really quickly becoming not my favorite anymore, just another MMO.....just like the VIP's are quickly becoming just another means of money for them and not really VIP at all.

While I appreciate that this is a new change for folks, just to clear a few things up

- In any free content business model (whether it's games, web comics, or what have you) there are three portions of revenue generation: product, donations, and advertising
- No we're not getting rid of the VIP tier (and I'll just throw in a  on this one.)
- We are working with our advertising partner to try and keep the ads appropriate to the audience. You might see ads for things like Magic the Gathering etc. They're still making the adjustments for us on what kinds of ads display.

We're also still exploring ways that you may not see the ads at all, but that is still in process.

While no one but Turbine know for sure I see no reason to phase out VIPs. If it does happen it will more then likely be the choice of the players. meaning..... eventually more VIPs will opt for the "Lifetime sub" over paying monthly.

Turbine likes money, I am convinced they don't care in what manner players give it to them.

I hope you're wrong, but I no longer consider anything to be too outlandish of an idea anymore.

Hmmmm...well, at this point all I can say is I'll beleive it when I see it, I'm a little confused as to why the developers would make such a drastic change to combat overnight......other than that 6HR. attack speed boost that will sell buy 3 get 3 free for (guessing here) around 100-150 a pop that comes out within the next few days. I could be wrong, maybe it will be less, not much tho, for the evil plan to succeed VIP's will need to spend money on points in excess of what they are given free each month.

Even with your goofy haste potions, they could still be used by VIPs. So that is no reason to pull VIP.

BTW, your haste potions are goofy because putting out a poor game that is only playable by buying haste potions is no way to get people to play consistently. Most people would stop playing in 5 minutes if that was the model. It is a far simpler explanation that they revamped the combat for simplicity and efficiency and that they didn't get everything perfect. In fact, Eladrin has already said they are still tweaking the system and it will be changed in the next update. Someone should introduce you to a gentleman named Occam.

BTW, I don't mind the banners as long as it doesn't noticably slow the load of the page on an iphone. I learned to ignore them a long time ago. That said, I wouldn't mind if they were suppressed for VIPs.

Personally they don't bother me at all, I never really understood why ads bothered anyone. I can understand why a web page that has more than 25% of the page covered in ads is annoying, the content gets lost in the clutter, but a singular banner ad does not really distract from the page at all IMO.

I don't know, seeing as how ur so wise would u like to enlighten us all as to why they would take one of the greatest parts of the game to many and trash it?
When ur done with ur theory can I have my hat back plz?

Easy there killer, I am sure ur DDO addiction will stilll be fed in some way or another.

I guess what I am really trying to say is when a change that drastic is made to combat overnight, when all the sudden banner ads are popping up, when certain things that were bound to account at the store are now bound to character, it means something is up.

I may be goofy, but at least I am not naive.

I don't know seeing as how ur so wise would u like to give ur theory as to why they took one of the best aspects of this game to so many and trashed it overnight?
When ur done can I have my hat back plz?

Another thing I wanted to point out which I forgot the first time is why would Turbine have given 3000 free TP's to 2+year subscribers who could now buy almost a third of the content, and then periodically go back and forth from being a VIP and saving up the 500 free TP's a month and switching back to f2p when they want and eventually just buying everything thru points and not ever having to re-subscribe. OK, now they have just lost a steady subscriber, have to keep up maintenance of that players data, and hopefully replace revenue with new players, many of whom will be f2p and will not be purchasing as much as the subscriber, who at one point only had one option to be able to play the game, and that was to pay a subscription.

Talking about not making sense.

Using Firefox and Ablock plus as well, no more ad :)

There is one problem with this... if everyone used adblock then no one would see the ads for DDO, and there wouldn't be any where near as many new subscribers.

In general, ads allow content to be free (or cheaper), blocking the revenue for the content will cause the content to either go away or end up having a fee.
