What is UMD and why is it good? I know it stands for Universal Magical Device, but how does 1 obtain it and what use does it have?

UMD lets you use a magic device (such as a cleric's wand or scroll) or equip an item restricted to another alignment/race as if you were that class/alignment/level.
UMD is a skill you can select while levelling up and is based on your CHR score as well.
The most common uses are for fighter types equiping weapons or armor they can't normally use, or for anyone using clerical or mage wands and scrolls for healing or buffing. It generally is easiest to get decent UMD on a rogue, bard, and/or a high CHR char. Certain items also boost your UMD.
edit: too slow lol

it has multiple uses.
1, to bypass race requirement/alignment requirement on equipement or weapons
2, to use wands and scrolls for those normally not able to use specific wands or scrolls.
