Being a noob I find it sometimes difficult to choose a reward item. I know I have already skipped over many ultra rare and super valuable items. I can use the auction house to check chest loot but have no way of checking reward items. Are there any general tips for knowing what I should keep?

There is a thread called... definitive reward loot list that lists just about every reward item in the game. IF you examine it you can see what items best suite you for the level range your in and suits your playstyle. Some items you will upgrade in a few lvl's but several you will keep even at lvl cap.

Besides the unique items, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing among randomly generated items as well.

Armor - Adamantine and Mithral are good. Breastplate, Chain Shirt & Full Plate are good. Brigandine, Chainmail, Hide, Padded....not so good.

Weapons - Adamantine is good at low levels, Silver of Pure Good is worth holding onto even if you've never seen a devil or vampire yet. Few or well-matched bonuses, like Flaming Burst, Acid of Pure Good, or Ghost Touch of Pure Good are good. Multiple bonuses increase the odds of something becoming less valuable due to higher min. level - Flaming of Power I is worth less than plain Flaming, for example.

Clothing and jewelry - same general idea; fewer bonuses is better at lower levels (and you can get the bonus you want cheaper if you wait till higher level to buy something less efficient - Min level 7 or 9 feather falling boots of swim or tumble are often cheaper than min level 5 boots of feather falling)
