View Full Version : DDO Achievements

How about achievements you can earn from doing stuff that appear in your bio or above your name in game. Several other MMOs (LOTRO, WOW, SWG) have/had this and provide many people some structure for doing fun/wacky things with their guild and friends and gives people something to aim for between mods. I can think of some examples but I'm sure there's more.

e.g. complete certain quests in a certain time. Complete quests solo? Reach a certain level without dying (nice for the permadeath people). or wacky stuff like do a raid with a party consisting entirely of one class (e.g. all monk shroud). How about -do all the available raids in the game in 24 hours (a bit like the 'Race to the subterreane event')

Quest specific? e.g. complete quests without killing mobs. (like the R.O.G.U.E. proving grounds) or killing Harry in one round on normal/hard/elite.

Favor based? - allow us to show titles when we get certain levels of favor.

Account based? - e.g. reaching cap on all the available classes and races?

Anything that makes doing stuff and running old quests in certain ways more fun.

If it's hard to determine what the timings for the raids should be - add them in at a later date once statistics have been obtained on how fast people run quests.

Any more suggestions for achievements that DDO could have?

Garth

A few ideas. Each has an achievement name. Some are very easy, some are very tough:

1) The basics:
- Attain level 4 (8, 12, 16, 20)
- Attain an inherent bonus to one or more stat (achievement name: Nom Nom)
- Attain an inherent bonus to each stat (name: Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom)
- Loot a binds-on-acquire item (name: Bound)
- Roll a 20 on a saving throw (name: Saved)

2) Raid Completions
- Slay Sor'jek Incani (Hero of Tempest's Spine)
- Slay Sor'jek Incani on Elite difficulty (Champion of Tempest's Spine)
- Slay Velah, the Red Dragon (Vault Breaker)
- Slay Velah, the Red Dragon on Elite (Elite Vault Breaker)
- Obtain a 20th completion reward for Vault of Night (Eternal Night)
(similar for Titan, DQ, Abbot, Reaver, Shroud, VOD, Hound, Tower of Despair)
- Solve the Stormreaver's puzzle in 5 or less moves (Mastermind)
- Solve the Stormreaver's puzzle on the 12th and final try (In the Nick of Time)
- Pull the Stormreaver's "Raise Dead" lever
- Defeat the Black Abbot's Asteroid minigame
- Defeat the Black Abbot's Ice Wand minigame
- Defeat the Black Abbot's Phasing Chasm minigame
- Defeat Arraetrikos in Shroud part 4 in one round on Normal
- Defeat Arraetrikos in Shroud part 4 in one round on Hard
- Defeat Arraetrikos in Shroud part 4 in two rounds on Elite
- Defeat Arraertikos in Shroud part 5 within 18 minutes of speaking to Quissana (normal, hard, elite)
- Equip a Green Steel item
- Equip a Supreme Tyrant greensteel item

Quests:
- Attain 100 favor
- Attain 400 favor
- Attain 1000 favor
- Attain 1750 favor
- Attain 2500 favor
- Attain 3000 favor (if possible)
- Slay Aussiercaex and Aussierdar in Prey on the Hunter (A knife in the back)
- Complete The Black Mausoleum while not in a party
- Slay the three dragons in Gianthold Tor on elite
- Slay the three dragons in Gianthold Tor within one minute of the first one dying. (This involves splitting the party, of course, and is very tough even on Normal)
- Complete the quest Prey on the Hunter, killing no more than seven foes (I think that's the minimum, Roskilde, Kalijarne, and 5 mobs to open doors, may be wrong)
- Complete the quest Stealer of Souls and slay Sor'jek Incanni the lich on Normal/Hard/Elite

There's a few ideas for starters.

Often done as some sort of "badge" system in other MMOs.

Its alway fun for the completionists out there.

Problems might be limited space as well as it will be a lot of work for not much benefit.

Completionists, favour hunters and the more carebear sections of the population will enjoy it. I'd wager most people wouldn't care and more than a few would whinge about it taking away from developing more content.

Personally, I'd quite like it.

How about kill 200 pigeons. Oh wait thats another game.

But foamy says it better than I ever could
Just go to you tube and put in foamy and achievement and you will get a very clear understanding of why there should never be any such system in DDO or any other game.

A negative consequence would be that a lot of the tougher achievements would be effectively gated by your willingness to expend mnemonic potions pursuing them. And since those potions are now going to be sold for cash...

Well, the bragging rights don't feel as good when nobody can tell if you got it by being skilled and dedicated to the game itself, or mainly by the strength of your credit line.

In the examples of competing games with successful achievement systems, I don't think they allow real-world money to have as direct an impact on short-term performance as DDO is going to.

if there isn't space in the bio in-game then once my.ddo.com arrives - that would be a good place to advertise your achievements, and you would also be able to compare your achievements against other people's. Think the way that xbox live does it - you can compare what you have with what your friends have. I think it would add a really good new set of goals for many players in DDO.

Re: the mana pot thing - that's already here - the all sorc shroud on elite used something like 200 mana pots, and the solo VOD achievements used quite a few too. This is just providing a structure to those impressive achievements so other people can check them out and try and strive to get them too.

sirgog: excellent ideas! Anyone else have any achievement ideas?

* Explorer points - get all of them in game
* Shrines - used X # of rez shrines/rest shrines
* Visitor - interacted with certain non-quest related items (see Gygax memorial, Founders monument, ect)
* Leader - created party & successfully completed all quests as the leader of the party
* Right Hand Man - joined but did not create the party & successfully competed all quests
*Watcher - find & identify 1,000 hidden doors
Fashion model - changed armour to heavy, medium, light, robe, X3 within 5 minutes

It is really limitless. Some of them need to be silly/pointless & just for fun. Some should be difficult/almost impossible to give people something to strive for.... when new classes come out you can add limited time Acheivements or 1 shot acheivements (like the first halfling druid to hit level 10!) that make some of the crazy competitive people try new things. Some of these things may be easier with store bought goodies, but that doesn't mean that the store is the only way to do it.... Good idea!

Uh, that's a bad thing. Those "achievements" are much less impressive because they come down to "How many potions are you willing to burn in one session?"

Could have one for getting the killing blow on each raid boss, so then people can take it out of their bios!

Amass X amount of gold.

Something with killing X number of people in PvP, also might make some people do it ... like me.

More raid achievements:

Shroud:
Quality not Quantity: Defeat the Shroud with only 6 (or fewer) players in group (separate versions for each difficulty)
I can haz mana potz?: Defeat Arraetrikos in the Shroud in a group where every party member has 11 or more levels of the same class.

Hound:
Ow! My eyeball!: Slay Xy'zzy after killing ten or more beholders in one HoX instance
Charming: Personally use a Stone of Command on a Spawn of Xy'zzy
Miscommunication: Slay Xy'zzy after someone in the raid uses a Stone of Command on any foe in HoX other than a Spawn of Xy'zzy
Where did I put my friends again?: Defeat Xy'zzy with 6 or less players in group.
I'm crazy, nobody likes me: Defeat Xy'zzy with 3 or less players in group.
Kick the Puppy: Personally obtain a killing blow on Xy'zzy
Actually yes, I do have all day: Complete Hound of Xoriat, taking more than twelve minutes from the time Xy'zzy activates, with noone re-entering the instance.
Epic Fail: Suffer a party wipe after Xy'zzy is vulnerable to attack.

VOD:
So close, yet so far: Suffer a party wipe with Suulomades at 3% hp or less
Epic Recovery: Defeat Suulomades during a VOD instance in which you obtain the "So close, yet so far" achievement (through use of Death Pact, or lingering AoE spells killing Suulo after the party are all dead)
Welcome to the Blender: Defeat Suulomades on Elite with no traps disabled
Timely Demise: Slay all four Orthons in each of the two waves within ten seconds of each other.

Tempests Spine:
What's this back doing stuck to my knife?: /laugh at someone after they pull 'the trap lever'

Meh, I've seen achievements on other games, I suppose it would give some players something to do and others something to brag about.

I don't know if the benefit of having this would justify the amount of work to create it in my opinion.

All achievements require a full 12 man raid party unless noted. Some raids may not offer some achievements due to mechanics of the raid. (e.g. using control stones in Hound, swapping abbot goggles on...)

"Last man standing" (any raid): At the time of completion, be the only living party member.

"They're just here to watch" (any raid): Have a kill total higher than the combined rest of the raid, complete with the killing blow of the main raid enemy.

"The truth is out there..." (Shroud): Earn the extra chest in part 4.

"Angelic Savior" (Reaver's Fate): Fly to and pull the eastern lever and release at least 6 soul stones.

"It's just the wind..." (Reaver's Fate): Complete the raid without killing an air elemental.

"Divine Justice!" (any raid): Complete the raid with only Clerics and Favored Souls. *note that any non-cleric non-favored soul multiclass will make this achievement unobtainable.*

"Arcane Power!" (any raid): Complete the raid with only Wizards and Sorcerers.

"Brute Strength!" (any raid): Complete the raid without any character that has an SP or Ki bar.

"Miserly" (any raid): Complete the raid without any player using any consumable item.

"12 one-man armies" (any raid): Complete the raid with no player using a helpful spell or ability on a player aside from themselves.

"VERY Miserly" (any raid): Complete the raid with the Miserly achievement, and also without using any charges from any item that casts a spell."

"Dressed for success" (any raid): Complete the raid without putting on or taking off equipment.

"Devilishly dressed for supreme success" (Tower of Despair): Complete the raid with the Dressed for success achievement, with no party members banished.

Quests:

"I must succeed!": stabilize and self-regenerate from -9 hp, then complete the quest without dying.

"I don't feel so good...": Be poisoned, diseased, stat-damaged, or neg-leveled for half the total time of the quest or more.

"(quest name)? A trivial matter": Complete the quest without any shrine being used by anyone.

EDIT: To the posters above: What's with the convoluted, and extremely specific ideas? No wonder Achievement systems today suck, there's so little people in the world who actually understand how to design them and what to use it for in specific games....

I made a thread on this before, people didn't really like the idea overall.
http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=344035

I still say it would be neat if we got titles for finishing a certain line of Quests or doing so with a challenge.
Turbine doesn't need to build perma-death into the game as an option, or any other difficulty altering thing, really.
They just need to design a few clever and challenging Titles/Achievements for the players to do it themselves, possibly for a minimalistic benefit as an added bonus/incentive.

I don't see why we can't have something like this, yet everyone's just FINE and DANDY with the idiotic, overpowered guild ship buffs system.
