Please excuse my ignorance if this is a stupid question, but :) is buying the boxed game the only way to get a product key? can i not just pay $15 for one? If i subscribe will I get one?
I have a key for the beta but I am pretty sure this wont work.
Is it possible to buy the 'boxed' game electronically? from a proper vendor?
Thanks in advance for any help

Go to trial.ddo.com and download the current Live copy of the game along with a 10 day free trial. At the end of the 10 free days you will be able to just upgrade for the montly subscription fee to a standard/vip account.

It is both. You can play for free but don't have access to all content and a few other limitations. You can choose to buy some of those from the DDO store rather than pay a monthly fee if you want access to certain content and whatnot.

If you're unable to play it's not because you're not paying, it's likely a bug of some kind, I would suggest contacting game support and telling them what's happening.

what happens when you try? are you able to login?
Im betting its not a bug and you might be using wrong username/password if not able to login.
Also the original post in this thread is old...and was before DDO had the option for F2P.

I purchase a $20 Ultimate Game Card from Blockbuster and used it to get 1 month vip/premium. Ultimategamecard sent me an email giving me a 25 digits code activation key for 1 month vip/premium and told me to go to Turbine to redeem it. When I went to turbine the 25 digits code didn't work. It wanted a product key to proceed, but my account is free. I wanted to upgrade my account to 1 month premium/vip. DDO have not yet answered my email nor Turbine support have answer my phone calls.
Warning to all. Don't buy any game cards from DDO, Ultimategamecard, or Turbine in regards to this FREE DDO. There are no people at customer support to help you and apprently they stole my money.

You did not buy any game cards from DDO or Turbine. You bought it from Ultimategamecard. It is most likely that they gave you an incorrect activation key, so the error would be on them. I suggest you contact Ultimategamecard and tell them what happened, instead of ranting and blaming DDO/Turbine.

so if i sent you an email with 25 digit code and called it an activation code for 1 month vip to DDO and it didnt work...you would blame turbine for this??
hope you see how this is Ultimategamecard's issue and not turbines.
I dont get why people bother with these game cards...just spend that money on a prepaid Visa or Mastercard.
It works just like a credit card so you know there will be no problems with it and you can walk into pretty much any grocery store or Circle K and pay cash for one.

There is a known issue with GTCs. Please see this sticky (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=200500) for more information and steps to follow.
You can find alternate payment method information in this sticky (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=203387).

I ran into thissame issue because I followed the instructions on the back of the card. I phoned turbine and they were able to fix my situation but I learned from the guy over the phone that you can enter your Ultimate Game Card right in your myddo.
Since I had bought 2 cards and didn't want a monthly subscription I ended up with 30 days subscription and then I went into myDDO and added the other card for 1200 ddo points in a very convienient set up I would use again if I need points.
SO, do not follow the instructions on the back of the Ultimate Game Card or you will hit a dead end and have to phone to get it fixed. Instead go to your ddo account log in and add the card. You even have to select the Ultimate Game card and enter the 10 digit number so you will know if you are in the right place.
