View Full Version : Best Partner for a rogue

My friend and I are both currently downloading the free trial.

He is set on playing a rogue. We would be adventuring together exclusively. Nothing to serious, just for fun.

My question is, what would make the best partner for him? I was thinking someone with healing abilities. Maybe a bard or cleric? Cleric seems like the best choice. But, making a bard, would there be times where it would be beneficial for both of us to be able to sneak? And would the fact that both a bard and a rogue are lightly armored be a detriment to our duo?

If you plan on duoing the entire game content--a great match would be a battle cleric with intimidate abilities (check this build http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=161300). You'll be able to heal yourself and your friend, do some solid attacking, and can keep agro on yourself so that your friend gets his backstab damage.

I realize I should have provided more detail. The rogue class is one of the best (if not the best) at delivering huge damage to enemies IF it is getting backstabs. To get backstabs, it must not have the attention of the enemy. As a duo, there are 2 main ways to take attention away from the rogue: do more damage than the rogue (difficult to do with a duo, and very difficult to do with healer build); or use the intimidate skill. Intimidate is usually used by fighters--which wouldn't be able to heal. But a battle cleric can make a great intimidate build and heal.

That battle cleric build would probably be best overall.

A ranger can wand heal, do lots of damage and take agro a lot to give the rogue sneak damage, and if you go for a ranger/monk build, can have a nice ac also to survive a lot.

A battle wizard of some type could be good too. Warforged for self healing, and spells can get a lot of attention.

For healing, as long as the rogue has a good ac, carry a couple cleric hirelings, make them stand back until you need them and then call them up can work too.

If your only ever going to play two people - high ac builds are really going to make a difference - or else one of the two will need to be a cleric probably.

Oooo. I like that option. If the rogue is also a Warforged, this is a killer combo. The wizard can heal the rogue (and itself), can do major damage, and can crowd control. That might be the best combo.

A bard would be cool too. But you'll have to play a little more slowly and carefully. Fascinate is really helpful - esp. when duoing / shortmanning at low levels with new players.

Enjoy!

To be honest this game is designed to be played in groups larger than two. New players to this game (i.e. w/o twinking) can find some of the content a little rough after Korthos and the Harbor. You really should consider grouping, the best way is for both of you to group together and then start a LFM (looking for more) on the social panel with the two of you. A good thing to state in your LFM after you choose the quest is "new players, no zerging, going slow" to ensure the "right" kind of player joins with you ... feel free to start the mission before a full party and also state "in progress" on the LFM if you choose to do this. Then when you meet new people, you can build further relationships in game, and you might be surprised how helpful some people can be if you just ask them.

I hope this helps.

P.S. if you choose Thelanis as your main server I can certainly give you some help and point you guys in the right direction as this poster is my guild leader:

I'll repeat what KingOfCheese said, a melee cleric with Intimidate would be a good fit.

That won't be true comes September 1st.

So, I ended up making a cleric-tank type character as suggested.

Anyway, we're having a problem now. And I figured I'd just ask here to save clutter.

We're doing the quests in Korthos Village. We'll both get the quests. And then I've been clicking and zoning in first (on normal difficulty). Afterwards, he does the same (clicks the door, and then clicks normal). However, he isn't getting a completion for any of the quests we do this way. Is it intended to work like this? Is there a solution? Thanks!

When I am playing my rogue, my all-time favorite character to have with me is an intimi-tank. Strength-based TWF (tempest maybe?) rogue with an intimi-tank battle cleric FTW!

As for the completions problem, he should see on the panel that opens the quest if he is on the quest or not. If you are not, bright red wording appears at the bottom telling you you are not on that quest. If you are in a quest when it completes you will still get xp for it even if not on the quest (unless you are too high of a level, entered too late, or have someone over 4 (I think it's 4) levels above you.

All members of a group need to talk to the quest giver, otherwise the one(s) that didn't won't get completion.

To skip some of that, you can use the share function from your quest journal, if you have the quest, to update your party member.

King of Cheese scores in the first post!

As Riggs suggested, a WF caster and WF rogue combo could also work (but would probably be quite a bit squishier).
