View Full Version : The problem with the forum reputation system

There is a glaring issue with the forum reputation system, namely that it seems that the more glaringly trollish, insulting, and sarcastic I make a post the more likely it seems to be marked up.

It is a nice idea, but I doubt it is working an intended :P

I don't rep a post that is detrimental to the health of the ddo community.

If it's funny, helpful, and well worded, I will rep it.

Any posts made (seemingly) in anger, unfounded angst, and not well written, will get ignored.

simple as that.

Some however, spread points in a tight circle of friends, that their perogative, but it dilutes the intended use.

What? Are you even reading the same forums as me? This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard! Go back to WoW.

I for one don't like the rep system. Even when you opt out, you are still able to receive "rep", which is irritating. But it doesn't bother me if other people want to use it.

But if you are complaining about it, you should probably have is disabled.

I wish they would change the name of it to something else. Reputation doesn't fit really.

*Also to the OP, referencing disciplinary action in your signature can lead to more disciplinary action. FYI

I think they should call it "cool posters club points" and all those with mega rep can have their own vip access forums where they can talk about how lame others are.

lol im not being serious in my leaving the game I disabled my rep I know that if i dont reup before it runs out I probably wont be posting much more in the forums so what people think of the posts I make no longer matter to me. Though I do agree op smart arsed and funny comments tend to garner more positive rep. Maybe its because the forums have been a breeding ground of negativity of late. The long wait for mod 9 many people have taken solace in coming to the forums and venting in the way of attacking, arguing and trolling posts. Im not condoning it im just saying unless something viable happens so thats the way the forums is gonna stay and people who give out rep are faced between those who still give enough of a **** to post relevant or nice things. Or those funny bastards who are trouble but soo much fun to read :)

If that's not bad enough, all the women on my server get an additional two boxes of Rep for free!

lol Mithran should have saved the rep cause I know your gonna just turn around and post something funnier but I did notice even if I didnt say nothing that the forum chicks are getting long bars of rep. (Yes I said long bars let the jokes run free). Before I disabled mine I had a long green bar of rep and im still trying to figure out how lol. Guess people do like drivel after all :)

Well... I got piles of REP, and I really have no idea why. I am not cool or funny on the norm. I just try to be honest and keep it real. I help where I can, joke when I can and speak my mind when it needs to be said.

It is true though, it is often the funny posts or the strongly stated critical posts that get the REP on the forums. All in all, it is just a silly system that has no bearing on anything. I wouldn't worry about it. I could disable it, but to what avail? I could worry about it, but to what avail? The only way it would really matter is if Turbine gave us something in game for forum REP. Since they don't and since I would be opposed to such, it just doesn't matter.

I say, just do your thing up here on the forums and let the chips fall where they may. It really is a silly green bar in the corner. At best, it points out who the real FORUM TROLLS are! :D

Just sayin'

That is what I'm saying though, it really doesn't. I've made around 100 posts here, and no more then 15% of them were productive, the other 85% or so were just horrible trolling.... and I've only received positive rep.

People need to be harsher! :P

Hehe all you have to do is start making more posts about how your ideas can "Fix" ddo or better yet be such a blind fanboi that you make it your life's mission to go into threads and tell people they suck for not supporting all Turbine's decisions.

if that doesnt get your rep in the negs then you just have to many friends :)

Well most of us can only give positive rep at this point cuz you can't give neg rep until you have received 150 positive rep. So, keep getting that good rep and you'll be able to notch folks down a bit (or they you, i guess). Yeah it's meaningless but fun!

People need to be harsher! :PWell, you cannot give Neg Rep until you reach a certain green-box benchmark... so I'm not sure how many people can be harsher with the Rep. For that matter, I'm not sure what the box-level to give Naughty Rep is.

I agree, the forum rep is a goofy function. I have recieved both positive and negative rep for bizzare posts that I have made.

Heck, I have recieved negative rep for a post that was in no way mean cruel, trollish or otherwise. I simply stated my opinion on a topic, and recieved negative rep because someone didnt' agree.

The truth is though, does it really matter that much. It is here. Some ppl like it. Others don't. If the rep system deters one additional member from posting rude and otherwise useless comments on the forums each day. Then it did its job.

But really, does having or not having rep on the forums that big a deal? It doens't change my actual GAMING experience in Stormreach. And that is what matters most about ddo to me.

Sorry, my post must have been poorly worded. I'm not for or against rep on the forums in general, I was just pointing out that the system itself is faulty because people actually mark up trolling posts, which is counter-productive :P

Are you saying that the rep system is counter productive becasue it discourages ppl from making trolling posts? I guess I need more description. I'm not following wha tyou are say.

Maybe you're just a little uninformed on the way the rep system works. Currently there are very few people that can give negative rep. Almost everyone that's received negative rep thus far have received it straight from the moderators, who shouldn't even be able to give out negative rep since if it were up to the forum posters they'd be on the low end of the rep system anyway.

The system is not faulty. People mark up posts which give them entertainment. The system, though, is just a statement that the moderators have the idea of these forums all wrong to begin with. People come here for entertainment, not to be moderated and harrassed for providing said entertainment. In that aspect you'd be correct... I seriously doubt that the system was implimented with the same intent that the public has for it.

Although after reading your own posts on the matter, and some of the other people's opinions on it... I'm thinking it may be time to decloak my green-boxes. Yes it's a silly system, but turning it off doesn't really effect anything. Turning it on doesn't really effect anything either. It's a total wash.

How do you tell how much rep you have anyway???

I can see the number of boxes, but mousing over only gives a level like "noted" or something. 1500 seems like a lot...but I guess we can't have negative rep powers available to just anyone! Maybe we could make it 1750 rep and combine it with discussions on 32 pt builds and 1750 favor...hmm.

If you click on the Rep box in one of your own posts - it will tell you how much Rep you have, and how much that individual post has garnered.

-or-

You can also click on your UserCP/Edit Options, and it will tell you your Rep total in the Show Your Reputation Level field.

Thanks for the tip.

I see the total rep now, although it looks like the rep per post part is not working (either that or I have some posts I don't know about getting rep!)
