Sorry been having issues for the last 3 hours on Khyber, when was it proposed that it would only be down for an hour? Here in aus i find it hard to equate what time is what, ya know, est v cst v any other st, so what time kinda like is that in australia time? Is that now, or in the near future or some other time? Just trying to figure out what time is what being its kinda been going on for a good couple of hours and now we are told it might be down for another hour?

The servers are down currently, and I'm assuming the minutes don't change between time zones, so add ~ 40 minutes to whatever time it is now.

Thanks for that, the screen is the same as it was 3 hours ago so i couldnt distinguish any noticeable difference between the servers being up or down. If the servers were down i wouldve assumed that there would be red x next to the worlds or connecting page, but its the same as if you were logging in normally. That was why i was asking if the time proposed for restarting had passed, was coming up, or if the 1 hour estimate was totally out of whack, just like release dates for things :)
Edit: Just tried logging in again and now have red crosses, guess the restart was delayed and that the 1 hour estimate is from now thereabouts so all things being equal should be back up by wednesday.

Your kidding right? This kind of stuff is always happening. The game randomly decides to take 5 minutes for you to sell something, people occasionally have a issue logging in, mail refuses to let you take stuff out, bank's wont open.
This isn't something that happens occasionally its always happening,

Because the idea of changing the clocks for Daylight Saving Time is repulsive to most people. If there were any real energy savings from it, why not just leave it that way for the entire year, and eliminate the headaches that come from setting the clocks forward and back?

How about those on double daylight? Would you like to invent a specific term for them in order to not confuse you?
Finally you do realize that even for those using Daylight Time the start and stop periods are different?

actually, emergency server restarts on a Sunday morning usually take a good hour or 2 hours, because there's very few, if any, people in the building who are qualified to screw around with video game servers at that hour.
As angry as I am with Turbine, dont forget, this is an emergency unscheduled reboot, and it's more in depth than just hitting "Off"...."On"... "drink coffee" :)

What on earth are you talking about - have you actually worked in operations?
"People qualified to screw around with VIDEO GAME SERVERS?" - what - you think these servers are powering the US power grid or something? *** are you talking about. You think "remote hands" is referring to highly trained personnel? Have you ever used remote hands? You tell them a rack number and a server (hopefully it's labelled correctly) - and half the time they call you back asking you where the power switch is - and how they use that to turn the server off/on.
And they're waiting on them to RESPOND. Hilarious. Real great SLA's they're running there.
And, as I indicated - there should be NO reason they would need remote hands for a reboot - even in a complex reboot scenario - the boxes should be remotely administerable in almost any circumstance - aside from catastrophic data centre failure.

Right, but think about it - in a business, who gets shafted working the early morning Sunday shift? The new guys that you dont actually trust with operating the microwave unsupervised :P
Combine that with Turbine, so the odds that the rack number and server are labelled incorrectly go up exponentially, and then you gotta wait for the hands to figure out how to operate a phone to call you back asking where the power switch is, THEN they turn it on, except that they don't, they turn something else off, because, you know, they're the bottom of the employee barrel. :P

Generally on an operations team every team member gets to work early morning sunday, on a rotating shift. It's the *joy* of working in operations.
And if their junior members can't figure out how to orchestrate a reboot - they shouldn't have initiated a reboot.

Yup - I can't understand a reason to even need remote hands this day and age unless you have TERRIBLE DATA CENTER PLANNING/INVESTMENT.
Oh yeah, that's what we have.
We have an operations guy here - what is happening that actually requires remote hands? Didn't we just move datacenters? You guys didn't plan for remote management during your move? How can you possibly be that bad at your job?

Holy Jesus! Your grocery store has 2-3 checkouts open?
Mine has 1 open during rush hour, and there's always 10+ people in line waiting. Then they open another for 10 minutes.
And ya cant use the self-checkout, cause they want you to keep all your groceries on there until they're paid for, so after the 4th item, youre out of room on the lil scale.

Two points; first has there ever been a time where the game has had a problem that has benifited the players, like instead of that 130gp drop in a chest instead there is 1000kplat or all rares drop at once ?
Second point is why does everyone still complain on the forum, I've been observing for some 2 and a half years and at each down time like this Turbine do exactly the same thing. You'd think everyone would have got sick of beating them selves up pointlessly.

the game servers are much more complex than a commodor 64. I should know, I still have 3 of them (2 still in original box).
I also have experience with managing servers at 32 schools. There is much more to it than hitting the power button. If all you want the server to do is be a file server then the power button is all that is needed, but for anything running specific software that is accessed from a remote location you have to do several steps to get the servers running and the software started.

This should almost never be true. People MUST learn to automate in the IT world. Seriously, the days of manually remoting to a box to perform manual tasks are over. We have the tools to not have to worry about that these days.

"It was good, Mike, I totally obliterated this f*g on the boards. Total pwnage, it was epic. I went out and pwned nubs for like 6 hours afterward. @#$%ing nubs don't know how to play ****, man, ill tell ya. Hey, did you get the memo about the TPS reports?"
"......Are you high?"
And please, my Lord Master Obliterator Of Everything And All, please forgive me for specializing in medicine instead of IT, and may you have mercy on me for using humor in a thread that you're unable to see anything but "SRS BZNS" in.
By the way, that was sarcasm, since I know you hvae trouble telling when someone's serious on the internet. :)

Well, there were those 2 times where returners were duplicated so that you got 100 returners for each one in your pack. People were handing out returners to their friends or selling 99 of them to the vendors and keeping one. This was back when returners were pretty rare and things like the Chill Shard and Dwarven Thrower were uber loot. That worked out well for some players-- at least until the "fix" they applied the second time.

Yeah? Big words. Are you going to edit out this snarky post as well and not stand by your nasty comments?
And no, I'm not a mature adult. I spend my free time playing DDO! Come on. You think I have a family and responsibilities?
Fine - you didn't specialize in IT - but you know what I don't do? Troll medical forums with inaccurate information about how "the doctors are doing the best" when really they're "****ing everything up"
*** Edit: Oh, sorry, Sarlona is back up, and I promised Patience I would stop arguing then - see ya in game ***

What's up with that anyway? Seems like we're always the last one to come back online.
Meh. Just like Brandywine server on LOTRO...

Because the idea of changing the clocks for Daylight Saving Time is repulsive to most people. If there were any real energy savings from it, why not just leave it that way for the entire year, and eliminate the headaches that come from setting the clocks forward and back?
DST is repulsive to most people? Really? Got any valid statistical data on that assertion? No? Go away.
P.S. DST is NOT some governmental conspiracy.
P.P.S. Headaches from changing clocks? You really should see a physician about that. No one I know gets headaches from having to change some clocks.
So what do we say for those places that do not have daylight time? Do you get made at them too?
How about those on double daylight? Would you like to invent a specific term for them in order to not confuse you?
Finally you do realize that even for those using Daylight Time the start and stop periods are different?
You could just say "Eastern Time" or "Central Time." Those are VERY simple terms.

Only in DDO would people be arguing over DST. ;)

Your kidding right? This kind of stuff is always happening. The game randomly decides to take 5 minutes for you to sell something, people occasionally have a issue logging in, mail refuses to let you take stuff out, bank's wont open.
This isn't something that happens occasionally its always happening,
always happening, and their "fix" is a restart. why not use this month you pushed the mod back in, and get a real dev team to fix the problems. youve been restarting for quite awhile now, and it obviously hasnt worked in solving the problem completely. stop circumventing the real problems, and quit worrying about things that dont matter. use our money for good use, for once. maybe buy new, updated equipment??? just a thought. or does your team not know how to compile and read debug reports to find the problem? if not, fire them all, and hire from scratch. maybe then we can have a great player experience. this game is gonna be renamed "dungeons and downtime offline" if you cant get this crashing thing under control.
