Greetings all you DDO players I'm looking forward to the August 6th f2p release of this game, but I'm curious how the classes work in this game since I've played other D&D rule based online games before but I'm not sure about this one. What I'm asking basically is if there's a list of skills, feats, and other things where I can familiarize myself with what this game uses.

Welcome to the game and I hope you enjoy your visit. The Compendium has a list of everything, and there is a player who creates a character generator so you can view builds before you actually try them.
Also try the ddo wiki. www.ddowiki.com

Supposedly, the Compendium would be what you want: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Compendium_Home
I use it a lot, but sadly it's still incomplete, occasionally inaccurate, and often misleading. By far the best info about character design is right here on these forums. Unfortunately I'm not aware of a step-by-step. You kinda just start drinking from the fire hose and figure it out after a while.
This game is surprisingly different from other D&D-based games, for several reasons: real-time game-play, group tactics, 4 "action points" per level that can be spent on class enhancements (some of which are so powerful they almost define certain builds), and hugely inflated loot.
Personally I think it's a great game, but don't expect it to be very similar to any other games you've played.

Classes are pretty straightforward, but gain 'prestige' enhancements at 6, 12, and 18. So that should be the core of your building. Pure 20, 18x/2y, and 12x/6y/2z, are expected to be a pretty common multiclass splits.
You can only multiclass up to three classes.
Barbarians and bards can not be lawful. Monks must be lawful. Paladins must be lawful good. So plan your full split ahead, and pick an alignment that all classes you can be a part of, and note that some combinations (barb+monk most notably) cannot be done.
You have skills that are 'class' and 'cross-class'. Cross class skills go up a maximum of +0.5 per level, and cost a full one skill point to get that half a skill point benefit. These cross-class skills 'cap' at half the benefit, so you can only have them half as effective as class skills, no matter how many points you try to put in them, it will eventually grey out and stop you. Class skills gain a full +1, and can go up +1 per level for that same one skill point. You spend these skill points when you level up at a trainer, so if you multiclass, you still count as class or cross class based on what you level as at that particular time. HOWEVER, once you have a level in a class that makes it a class skill, it uncaps that +0.5, and allows you to raise it by +0.5 more times, to add up to the same total as a true class skill, but at greater cost. So while it costs twice as much, you have removed the 'half rank' ceiling on how much you can spend, and can now -with a great skill points investment- catch up or keep up with that skill at full.
Example:
You are a lv1 fighter.
+4 jump (4pts max at creation, for +1 each)
+2 tumble (4pts max at creation, for +0.5 each)
+4 intimidate (4pts max at creation, for +1 each)
Lv2 you go fighter again.
+1 jump (1pt, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill)
+0.5 tumble (1pt, you are now capped at +0.5 per level for a cross-class skill)
+1 intimidate (1pt, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill.)
Lv3, fighter once more.
+1 jump (1pt, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill)
+0.5 tumble (1pt, you are now capped at +0.5 per level for a cross-class skill)
+1 intimidate (1pt, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill.)
Lv4, you go MONK. (monks get more skill pts per level.)
(((jump/tumble are monk class skills, intimidate is not!)))
+1 jump (1pt, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill)
Tumble is now 'uncapped' and can be raised as high as jump or intimidate could be.
+3 tumble (3pts, you are now capped at +1 per level for a class skill)
Intimidate only goes up +0.5/level on this monk level.
BUT, iit is also 'uncapped' because you have a fighter level where it's class.
+1 intimidate (2pts @ +0.5 each, you are now capped at +1 per level for a cross-class uncapped)
So for example, if you wanted to do a fighter with 'Use Magic Device' to allow him to cast various spells from scrolls or use a greater variety of equipment through bypassing requirements. You could do 18fighter/2rogue. Lv1, go rogue to 'uncap' use magic device which is a class skill for rogues. Make sure your character has enough intelligence that he can afford +2 skill points (for +0.5 each) each level, to continue raising UMD by a full +1. If you wanted intimidate AND UMD, you would need to make sure he had +3 skill points to use each level. Intimidate would only cost 1pt/level, since it is class for both rogue and fighter.

That is true, however, the majority of the content is pulled by Turbine from the game databases and we have no way of modifying that. Sure we can comment on it or create our own pages, but game-mechanic information like classes, skills, races, spells, etc. are Turbine maintained.

I hadn't heard that, but then I haven't been following the forums nearly as much lately .. Guess we'll have to wait for Borror0 to wander in..

No, it's not. However, we would need more man power at the DDOwiki. With Module 9 coming finally, we'll have a lot of things to change. More importantly, we've got pages and pages that are out dated. More specifically, we are missing spells, enhancements and feats. It would be great to have a more solid wiki for DDO:EU.
But, no, there is no plan to merge with the Compendium at this time. If the community so desires, they can do it.
It's just not our plan but it's not my wiki. It's the community's wiki.

If you start a character with the trial, you should be able to keep that character once the game is live. The trial program, however, will be discontinued once the game becomes free.
Welcome!

If you play the free trial on the live server's you should be able to keep them"I'm relativley sure that the free 10 day trial is no longer avalible since the F2P will be released next week Aug,6", but if your playing on the beta server any char you create there will NOT be transfered to the live servers.

If I was you, I'd avoid Argonnessen, Ghallanda, Khyber, Thelanis and Sarlona.

I hear Mabar is the best server.

The biggest thing is to specify up front you are new and learning. If you get with a bunch of vets they could possibly ditch you, but thats much better than the possible problems that may occur from such a pairing.

Sorry Rando, DDO actually means "Don't Dice Onions". It's the new trend in online gaming............. I have no clue where you got the idea that it had anything to do with Dungeons and Dragons.
Good luck to you though.... ;)
