i just started playing and was wondering how I should build my ranger.

So far people told me to start as level 1 rogue than the rest ranger.

Can anyone tell me what race and where i should put my points to start off. I would like to be a ranger that mainly focuses on dual wield if possible.
**I dont have the Drow or 32 point build availible**

Thanks =)

*Edit* I will also take other suggestions for good builds. Im really just looking for a dual wielding, lock picking, trap disabling, good damage character.

Yes, starting your 1st elvel as rogue is important. Otherwise you will missout many skillpoints.

A sketch for a PB28 Ranger who is a nice build for a beginner:

Strength 16 (all level ups in here)
Dexterity 14
Constitution 16
Intelligence 14
Wisdom 8
Charisma 6

1: Rogue
2: Fighter
3: Ranger
4: and till 20th level Ranger

Feats:
1: Thoughness
2: Dodge
3: Mobility
6: Spring Attack
9: OTWF
12: IC: Slashing
15: Power Attack

Wear a Fullplate untill you get the 9th Ranger level and get Evasion. From then on switch to light armor. This will allow you to have a good AC for as long as AC can be keept in a meaningful level without having to totally spec your build for AC.

In the lower levels (until level 5 - 6) Sword&Board trumps TWF. The -2 for dual wielding hurts ther and the added AC of a Shield makes a big difference.

Use Dwarfen Axes as your weapons of choice.

Take the Tempest Enhancement line asap.

Skills:
You can and really should keep these maxed out all the time: Search, Disable, UMD, Spot, Open Lock.

In the priority of being listed, so when you will run short a few skillpoints because of the Fighter level, lower Open Lock a bit.

Take the search enhancements and the skill boost line to deal with thouger traps.

The low WIS can be a issue for 1 or 2 levels, untill you get your hands on a good WIS booster item, but it will pay of in the long run.

In conclusion:
* You will be Though! Dwarfen save boni + Evasion + high HP through dwarfen thoughness enhancements.

* Full trap dealing capabilities and full UMD for versatility.

* Good AC untill you reach the Gianthold.

* Excellent sustainable DPS through being STR-based and Dwarfen boni. And the occcasional backstab damage as cream.

* No need for items, PB32 or tomes. This build can be played right off the starting block and will do very well while leveling up, and in the endgame, as well.

P.S.
Remember that you can use all Ranger wands without fail, once you have taken your 1st ranger level. Always having at least a cure wand and an Resist Energy wand at hand has saved countless groups.

Only other suggestion I would add is to let your SPOT skill slide if you have to. Once you play the game for a while you'll memorize where most traps are and spot becomes less important. Also, it doesnt take much spot to find hidden enemies.

Should I still use dwarven axes even with the penality and the heavy armor with the penality

With the scaling in dungeons now and the level 20 ability of faster shooting, you may want to finally consider making a pure Ranger.

I have not done it, but I intend to try to make on on Test server.

rangers get two-weapon fighting for free.

You get it at appropriate levels

ranger level 2 - two-weapon fighting
ranger level 6 - improved two-weapon fighting
ranger level 11 - greater two-weapon fighting

you don't need to meet the pre-reqs for the feats either... you get them at those levels of ranger no matter what.
