Hello All,

I'm a casual player who is currently leveling his first ranger. I've currently got her up to level three and am considering taking a level of rogue mainly for traps and UMD. I'd like to add some versitility to this toon. Being able to break out a raise dead scroll and disable a trap in addition to killing everything in sight is my goal here.

This ranger is only my 5th character and so far I've stuck with the premade builds as I don't quite feel ready to create a custom build.

At character creation I selected the tempest build path. My question is would it be a terrible mistake to spash a level of rogue when using a pre-made build like this? Should one go the custom route when multi classing? Should I start over from scratch? It does seem like it's better to start with your rogue level first because of the extra skill points.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You kinda answered your own question a little. going Rogue level 1 is good because a) of more skill points, but also because for all the other levels you can keep maxing out your rogue skills because they're now class skills.

The total limits of skill ranks you can purchase at level up is limited by whether a skill is a class skill for you (max = your character level + 3) or cross class (which is half of that total).

So by not taking Rogue at level one, you've lost the chance to max out UMD/Disable device from level 2-5. And because you havent been doing it it makes it harder to get your total rank up.

Not a bad idea to take Rogue, mind you. Just...you're a little behind the curve doing it later than level 1 thats all.

Since you are only level 3 my advice would be to reroll and take your first level as rogue. You get a ton more skill points and can then keep all the trap skills and umd up the whole time. My main is a 1rogue/15 ranger str based dwarf. He is a great damage dealer and still able to handle all the traps on elite. Just about any race works for this build. Easier with 32 point access. Human is a good choice if you don't since you get and extra skill point per level. A starting int of 14 is good if you are non human. Just to keep the skills up per level.
Here is the build I used but easy to switch to human with 12 int since you get the extra skill point.

If you wanted to go dwarf then drop st to 16 and that would save you 3 points and then make up the other point elsewhere.

If you want to go dex based any of the dex races would work. Drow might be a little easier since they have better starting dex and int.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

My main concern was screwing up my build by multi classing because I chose a predetermined build at charachter creation.

I think I'm going to start over and try a custom build.

D'rin, I may give yours a go.
