One of my guildies has an entire room full of D&D stuff. In fact, his D&D room is as big as my entire apartment (well, almost). He knows almost every rule front and back for all of the rule sets. I'll see if I can convince him to send you a PM.

thac0 is a dear but unmissed friend for me. Explaining how to calculate it to a new player was one of the most frustrating things as a DM. I think the 3.0 + system is a bit better, though I am sure that will draw lots of hate :) I was at Gencon when 3.0 was relased and have my players handbook signed by Dave and believe me then I was super resistant to change. But as with hybrid cars change can be a good thing. What would your ac be now if we switched back to the Thac0 system....-43 assuming -10 is not the cap.

I just recently sold my *Mint* copy of Deities and Demigods (with the Cthullu and Melnibonean Mythos in it) on ebay for a ton, I remember looking at all of the entries and looking at Indra (head god of the Indian Mythos) who had all 25 for Str, Int, Wis, Dex, Con, Cha and Comeliness
.......And wondered if I could ever have a charater with a stat as high as that......

Comeliness - must not have been a really early copy of it since I do not believe this stat existed in the first copy.
(edit here, it's been a long time since I thought about a lot of things. I recall comeliness was sorta ad-hoc added after the initial books, but not when precisely. I didn't think it was even listed for the attributes for the original book...no clue about later printings)
What's a "ton" anyways?

No idea if it's mint condition. I know i *used* my books to play although they've been gathering dust for a LONG time.
I started playing on June 19th 1975 and 21 years later to the day I married my lovely wife from Translyvania. I still prefer 1st edtion ad&d with no splat books I will say I did change ac as I never lilke the charts in 1st and then thaco in second I use a modifed version of the ac system from 3.0 other then that I use 1st edtion all the way except on the rare occasion I run orginal dnd

Before Ebay and 'legal electronic copies' destroyed the market, those editions could nab well into 3-digit prices. (I miss the old newsgroup alt.marketplace days...)

Played em all from basic to expert to when the Unearthed Arcana and other additions first came out (Greyhawk mostly). I also remember how excited i was to have a Str 17 on my fighter and a Intel of 16 on a wizard. Those were good times, as well as the 1st time I ever ran the Slavers Series (or Against the Giants) and the Temple of Elemental Evil in version 3.5 :eek::eek:
Most of my books I sold long ago or were donated to someone by my parents when I went to college.

Todd And Troll sell on the high end for original D&D collectibles but if a person wants it they usually are willing to pay a bit higher. I've seen two bidders run up the price way beyond what they would get from a resale simply because they get stuck in that I have to have it at any cost mentality.
This site here is great for finding out the true value of OD&D items. They have the Cthulhu listed as $52.00 US if in mint condition.

Sometimes I read stuff like this and I realize just how "cool" my parents are. DnD has been a family game for us since 1983 boxed sets and all. Heck even my Grandma used to play before she moved away. And, yes this does mean my family and I still meet up for a PnP session every week.

LOL I hate the new ****.. 4e is a stinking pile of lets play PnP WoW. Yes I remember when having a lower armor class was better :) I started with DnD (Basic) around 1980 and the moved to AD&D 1.0. I also still have the original Monster Manual and my friend in Germany(our DM) still has the original Deities and Demigods with all the copyrighted stuff. We used to pool our allowances to buy the books so they belonged to everyone, but the DM usually kept them at his house. I remember I wrote my first computer program on the C64 for DnD. I converted the ThAC0 charts for players and monsters into a program where you could basically type the AC, the Dice Roll and it would tell you whether or not it hit. Made it easier than looking it up in the chart.

I, like many others here, have played all editions of D&D/AD&D.
I've also played the Gold Box games. Pool of Radiance was my favorite. In fact, I have an old Compaq DOS PC with Windows 3.11 installed that runs very well. This PC is dedicated to the old Gold Box games that I still play (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Hillsfar, the Dragonlance setting Gold Box games, etc.)
Would love to be interviewed too!

That's what I remembered - it was in UA but I didn't want to stick my neck out because I was uncertain. Guess I should have gone with my first instinct...
Geez, I'd almost forgotten all the witchhunts for D&D to be the cause of suicide. Sadly, the game is just another on the long list of things to blame other than the individual.

Yeah, I sold mine about a year ago, and got a little more than that, but I originally bought it in 1994, from a convention dealer.
I looked at the spine of the book and it had hardly (1-2) places on the end where the colored cover was allowing any white to peek through. The sides of the spine had no cracks like no one had ever opened it.... I bought it for $30.
I kept it in a dragonskin since 1994, until I sold it on ebay last year.
I had a post-edited copy already, but at the time you werent considered a collector if you didnt have a copy of THAT book.
My recollection of when UA came out, and Deities and Demigods came out is shady, but I remember them talking about a negative Charisma or Comeliness that some evil gods had, and I thought it was Comeliness in Deities and Demigods.

I think you'll find alot of us here.
I started with Basic back in mid 70's, went to 1st edition, 2nd edition, then made our own 1.5 edition (took some rules from 1st and 2nd edition to make our own rule set). I have not set down for a pen and paper game for about 3 years or so (original crew no longer has the time necesary to dedicate towards gaming). I was DM for the same campaign for 7 real years. Still have most of the original books.
I have played probably 95% of the games listed below
(never played the NWN AOL version, or the last 2 NWN2 expansions, or the NWN Mobile.)
On my computer now at home I have BG1, BG2, Temple of Elemental Evil, Some of the old SSI Krynn games, Eyed the Beholder, NWN2, IWD2 and Menzoberanzan. Can still run most if not all of the old games using DosBox.

No I agree on the ac system I hated it and I run 1st ed with a 3.0 ac system
its actually quite easy if you know how to take short cuts. say a thac0 11 fighter with +5 in attack bonuses against an enemy of AC -6. so what we did was just to reverse the sign on the bonuses and AC and add them to thac0 to get the number we have to roll to hit, ie 11-5+6 = 12

the problem isnt with players being new but rather players with no logic
ie +5 attack = means you have higher chance to hit = need smaller number on d20
-5 ac = means mob is hard to hit = need higher number on d20
whenever i tell this to new players they understand it better but looking at my current batch of students in my college...... i wonder if they can even understand the dumbed down 3.0 ver :D

What an awesome response. The genesis for this idea was reminesing with my guildies about the TSR Goldbox games, and then some old PnP campaigns.
There are obviously some veterans here and I'm sure there are some amazing stories. I need to figure out how to do justice to it all. On top of that I have a terribly busy week at work coming up, so it may take a week or two, but I'll get down to it and try to put together a special episode of On the Couch that does justice to the subject matter.
I expect to get in touch with plenty of the people in this thread privately as I pull it all together.

It would be really cool to play a PnP game again. Though I gotta bring pizza and beer. I still have my lucky D20. Only roll it it life or death situations because I dont want to roll all of the good rolls out of it :)

Corn chips? Don't you know there's only two options for proper snacks at a D&D table? Either Dr. Pepper and twinkies or Mt. Dew and Cheetos. Anything else is an abomination! ABOMINATION I TELL YOU!!!!
I remember when Jolt came out and everyone drank it at the conventions...

The older versions of the game actually pre-date me... however the first time I played it was called AD&D and my cousin had every book and a subscription to dragon magazine, and an older red-box... world most of which somehow ended up in my possession somehow? After those initial
My view on the game however was that AD&D for as complicated as it was.. and the restrictions on race, class and it's overall design. It played much nicer, cleaner and more attune to general relationship of the lore previously envisioned in our past social ideas. This was the last version really design By Gygax and his team. The experience tables, loot tables and racial abilities, class restrictions made for slower progress however, it balanced all playing... Gygax understood when it came to the game it was all about the role and not the powers of the character... it was about Role and Roll (decision and chance) thus the d20 fit the game very well. I absolutely prefered Thaco and I played a ranger in Greyhawk for a long long time... Later I have played a bard - yes under AD&D , a druid, and rogue before. I also played a ranger into epic levels under 3.5... although the power and flexibility of the system unleashed a versitility - the game became more lacking of it's original intent, and actually lacking some of it's fun...

Very well said. Thats what I felt got lost as well, when you start defining everything you start boxing in your imagination with it. With us it was all about the role playing and fun. The dice was just there to determine the outcome of the battles we are already seeing in our head.

You know, 4E isn't an abomination.
What it also isn't is Dungeons and Dragons. It is a totally different (and, I might add, vastly inferior) RPG that shares a couple of name similarities. It reminds me of a video game that was put to paper. It has a couple of novel ideas, but nothing to make it worth playing.
They shoulda just called it Sewers and Suckfests, or something like that.

Someone that's played 1st ed. and 2nd ed. please, and is now ADDICTED to DDO. Having played all the TSR Goldbox stuff is also a bonus.
Who is up for getting on the couch to talk about when 18/00 STR was the business and there was no such thing as uber?
Howdy mate, played 1st, 2nd, 3.5 and also a branch off of black books, epic series.
Played all the TSR Gold Box series including Krynn, Pools of Radiance, Secret of Silver Blades etc, had the Gold Pack that included the training game Hillsfar.
First cracked into the game in 1987, and played quite regularly ever since. I remember the days of the Original rangers, the ones that could cast a combination of Magic User spells and Cleric spells. Thacos in the minus and an AC of -10 were the bees knees.
I still have some of the Red Books at home.
Happy to contribute or assist in any way :)

Sorry folks - I've been busy at work AND heavily distracted by all the news in DDO land.
I'll be getting in touch with some questions for people shortly.
I'm very excited about where our game is going. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it's great to see Turbine thinking about how to invigorate DDO and keep it strong for many years to come.

**** Riott, i just saw the link to the youtube video. That was the night I was over there too. I had no idea he ever posted that on youtube. Way cool man! I would have been hounding you soooo hard to get into that pnp group after seeing yalls game if you didnt live so freaking far from me.
Amabel, Riott hosts the coolest pnp groups ive ever seen at his house. If I could vouch for anyone in regards to hardcore pnp players it would be Riott. They even have the figurines for all the mobs. They draw out the module details on the table, set up the mobs and they even have wireless motorola text pads for each chair for private communicatio with the DM or other players. Really in depth to say the least.
Gruntis
Yeah that was pretty cool. He posted it not long after he shot it.
It's been fun.. We still have the group going too, although a few players have changed.
new adventures, new stories. Same fun.

Yes, and the DM would tailor the adventures to the party and a good DM could go for hours without rolling dice and you never noticed - or cared.
The DM could make house rules to improve the playability of that session based on characters and the players themselves which wouldn't impact other sessions.
The problem with the computer game is that as you add more variables (new items, rule changes, easy buttons), the changes apply globally to all parties and it is a very difficult job (like writing a module to be released to the public - a good DM would make changes but the computer can not so all decisions affect everyone equally). Something I recognize as very difficult for Turbine to do, so I give Props to the Devs for that difficult job and what they are trying to achieve. The modules in conventions were strictly ran with pre-made characters or strict character building guidelines. This is a free-for-all online and as they add more "house rules" - such as stores inside the dungeon, the balancing becomes even more difficult. When a PnP campaign gets out of hand, it falls apart. I just hope Turbine has that in the back of their mind that the enjoyment needs to be there and not some bean counter asking "will this change make more money"?

I play a mix of 1st and 2nd every Saturday, my group refuses to switch to 3rd and think 4th is an abomination! I'm up for it :)
Amen Brother!! I love 2nd Edition. I have 3.0 and 3.5 books for my husband but hate trying to play it. Bring back 2nd Edition!!

I met my husband when he was DM'ing a game in his barracks room. They were looking for a few more players and a friend asked me if I was interested in joining in. This was Jan 1986. It is 2009 and he is still my DM all we need are a few more players. :) When he would bring his sailor buddies over they brought the Captian Morgans and I collected car keys. We would play friday night to Sunday evening. I so miss those days. I don't do the DR or the Dew, so Coke or home made Honey mead for me and I can hang with Cheetos or Doritos!! I still go pale when my husband talkes about pulling out Temple of Elemental Evil......

Thank you everyone for your contributions. I wish I could have involved more people, but there simply wasn't space.
I'll try and do another take on PnP, maybe focusing on a more narrow topic, for people that missed out this time.
One thing is very clear - DDO is a game for real D&D fans, not just a namesake.
