Most people will recommend taking rogue at first level because it gives you more skill points to distribute between your rogue skills (such as open lock and disable device). It makes the first level a little clumsy as you wait for the skills from your main class to kick in, but first level shouldn't take long to get through anyways.
Enjoy your rogue splash!

As I said, I (and others) would recommend rogue at 1 if you want more skills points to spend on the rogue skills. Remember, you'll only get to spend full points on open lock, disable, use magic device, and other rogue skills on this level.
With your monk, if you are uncentred, then you will not benefit from things like generating ki, using your monk special attacks, using monk stances, or your centred bonus to armour class.
Staying centred means wearing no armour (just robes or outfits, though you can wear armoured bracers), wielding a monk weapon (handwraps, kama, quarterstaff or shuriken), and staying unburdened...which can be challenging for a dexterity-based monk if you like to pick up everything! :p
Soooo...if you splash rogue, you will get access to weapons you don't already have access to as a monk, but using them would not be recommended.

No rogue at level 1 or you miss out on a lot of skill points.
