Hail Stormreach!
It's your old drinkiin' pal Shaamis, back with another Deep Thought.
This time it's a serious Deep Thought: VAST and MYSTERIOUS,and what does it mean for us?
<GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP>
See, here is how I'm thinking.....Wizards of the Coast has the IP of D&D, and Turbine has based DDO off of that IP.
BUT......
WotC only likes to support the most recent set of rules, and/or campaign setting......
Since Eberron, and 3.5 are NOT either of those anymore, is it possible that the VAST and MYSTERIOUS could be alluding to an IP "release" giving Turbine more ability to do as they REALLY want with DDO?
AND......
Is that a good or bad thing?
<GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP><GULP>
I'll get back to this shorty, I have to make a beer run.
Sincerely,
The "Tapper"

A better question, is how the 3rd edition open license applies to computer gaming.
As I understand it as it applies to gaming material, any RPG can use the 3rd edition ruleset as long as they pay fees to WOTC.
How does that apply to computer games?
Tell me Shaamis. I'm asking. **** you.

That is a great question, and one I did not have an answer for.
I looked it up, and this is the explanation I got From Wikipedia:
The Open Game License (or OGL) is an open content (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_content) license designed for role-playing games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game). It was published by Wizards of the Coast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizards_of_the_Coast) in 2000 to license their Dungeons & Dragons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons) game as the System Reference Document (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Reference_Document), or SRD, in a move spear-headed by Ryan Dancey.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Gaming_License#cite_note-0) It is commonly used with the d20 license to allow individuals, amateur and professional companies and groups to publish the SRD and derivative works under the d20 System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D20_System) trademark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark). It has also been used to license content unrelated to the d20 System and/or the SRD.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Gaming_License#cite_note-1)
Those individuals, groups and publishing companies that license their works under the OGL are sometimes collectively referred to as the "open gaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_gaming) movement". [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Gaming_License#cite_note-2)

In many respects, the OGL resembles any other open source license. This section deals primarily with the OGL's differences with standard, open source licenses.
The OGL describes two forms of content: Open Game Content (or OGC) and Product identity (or PI) - that is content covered by normal copyright, commonly referred to as "closed content". The OGL permits the inclusion of both OGC and PI within a single work. Publishers are required to "clearly indicate" those parts of a work that are OGC.
The OGL defines the concept of PI as:
...product and product line names, logos and identifying marks including trade dress; artifacts; creatures characters; stories, storylines, plots, thematic elements, dialogue, incidents, language, artwork, symbols, designs, depictions, likenesses, formats, poses, concepts, themes and graphic, photographic and other visual or audio representations; names and descriptions of characters, spells, enchantments, personalities, teams, personas, likenesses and special abilities; places, locations, environments, creatures, equipment, magical or supernatural abilities or effects, logos, symbols, or graphic designs; and any other trademark or registered trademark...
PI must be clearly defined by the publisher and, by using the OGL, licensees are prevented from distributing, copying or modifying PI and claiming "compatibility or co-adaptability" with PI trademarks unless permission is acquired through a separate license or agreement with the holders of the PI.
Finally, the OGL requires attribution be maintained by the copying of all copyright notices from OGC a licensee is copying, modifying or distributing. Unlike other open source licenses, this requires that the license notice itself must be altered by adding all copyright notices to the Section 15 part of the license.
<GULP><GULP><GULP>
I guess that means anything specific WotC wrote, (I.e. Eberron campaign setting) is considered CLOSED content, and the altering, adding, deletion, or changing of the PI has to be approved by the owner of the PI.
If DDO was based off of a Turbine created world, where they are merely using the d20 system as a "backbone" for their combat/game engine, then they would have autonomous ability to add/remove/change what they wanted WHEN they wanted.
Since they are piggy-backing off of the WotC owned PI Eberron:Stormreach, they have to abide by their rules.
My question is: when will WotC release this PI for sale (as they have done in the past with Ravenloft) so it can be improved?

BTW Tolero just let a little kitten out of the bag. V&M is live game tech, I think this is a discussion of Super Secret. I am also in agreement that something of this nature is the major reason for the holdup of mod9. That some third party legal agreement is required to release Mod9 and that negociations for such have not gone "as planned"

I find your Thoughts quite enlightening Shaamis. Is quite interesting how Open Game Content and Product identity come into playand may affect us DDO subscribers in both short-term and long-term. I do hope to see mod 9 soon.
Oh, btw I wish to thank you for the reply... http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=151622&page=2 and do very much look forward to enjoying the sunny vale on that blanket… oh and the licker … eh, mean liquor. ;) :D

This sounds like being able to play as monsters, a lot like what LotRo has now, amongst other neat stuff.
Personally, I am all about character options, development, and more character options. Seeing as how D&D and more or less DDO is a ROLE-playing game, naturally, having more ROLES to play would be more important than anything.
However.....
Role-playing a dwarven monk with tree-trunks for arms, who has a taste for fine beer, and many other exotic liquors is still very fun.

I have to go work out now, but after I get done with my Monk exercises, I will be more than interested in hearing other techniques being performed to prepare for mod 9

Now where were we? Sampling your vintage, and getting to drink from the bottle?
Well, I have a nice magical bottle that never gets empty, and has my special brew, I like to call "Shaamis' Best"
It's one of a kind though sorry, but I'll let you take a drink if you prove worthy.
