(and you thought Turbine was bad?)

Patch 3.1 kills dozens of servers in cold blood

Not entirely unexpectedly, many servers are having trouble staying up and active this evening. In most cases the server itself isn't going down, but rather individual continents. Northrend and the instance servers in particular are taking a beating, and at least on my server, Eastern Kingdoms is dropping like a rock every now and then, too.

If you had big plans for this evening, you may want to reconsider. At the very least, raiders may want to wait until prime time has passed to give things a whirl. Generally, these things blow over as people start to log off for the evening, and there's less of a load on the server.

Blizzard is aware of the issue (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16409812345&pageNo=1#0), so hopefully we'll see a fix for it all soon. I personally suspect it's unlikely things will magically get better tonight, but maybe before the weekend. That would be nice.

Hello all,

We recognize that there are intermittent issues with select realms resulting in players getting stuck at "retrieving character list," receiving "world server down" messages, or getting stuck loading into instances. While our database administrators are actively monitoring and working to resolve these issues, we would like to consolidate reports on the General forum to slow the rate at which new threads are being created.

Threads reporting single realms going down are not seen by our database administrators, and only make it more difficult for everyone reading this forum to follow active discussions pertaining to game play.

Please not that, as the General forum does not exist as an outlet for players to report service issues, any service-related threads will be considered spam and deleted. Feel free to report such issues in this thread. While you may not receive a response, we will ensure that the issues being reported here are being investigated.

Thank you for your understanding. :)

Surprisginly enough, the thread is only 66 pages at the time of viewing.

Apparently these problems aren't specific to Turbine. ;)

Yep, very amusing to hear peoples condemnations, and even more amusing their assumptions as to how trivial something like this is. Guys, just stop the program, install the patch, and start the program again! Duh!

I might have more users in my environment, but I have nowhere near the same type of SLA (pretty much 24/7) that DDO has. It's incredibly demanding, and the cost to do so is enormous...and even WoW with their extraplanetary body of money orbiting the Earth can't get it perfect...

Blizzard has millions more users (and equipment, and possible problems), and yet their servers only lag or crash every few months (and for less extended periods than we get). Yes, random bad things happen to every company, but Turbine is vasly more inferior when you weight your findings based on users.
