was just thinking back on some books i used to read and I had an idea for the epic levels.......

what if in order to level you not only had to get the xp but you also would have to obtain a certain bound rare item/s from prior quests AND complete a class specific mini-quest-test , solo. a mini quest that incorporates variable elements and class relevant puzzles that change each instance. kinda like in karate when testing for the higher black belts.

I remember something like this was in Dragon Lance (back in the day! lol) when Raistlin was going for his 3rd level red robe. it was a completion or die test, and if i remember correclty that is where he got his special powers and golden hour-glass shaped pupil's (eyes). Plus his staff of the magi, not to mention his alignment change to black robes(**** deals with the devil, gotta watch those closley) .Staff not to be confused with ebbrons magi item, this staff was the penticle of mage items.. kinda like the Holy avenger is to the Pali.

so whatcha think?

While I agree that would be a neat idea I am afraid you failed your geek test:

1- Raistin was a character in Dragonlance, not Forgotten Realms
2- He acquired the Staff of Magius, not a Staff of the magi.

http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/magicitems/dragonlance.html

3- He didnt actually take the Black Robes until well after the test

Edit - I see you noticed your mistake on the world

Wow dude, you are taking me back to about 8th or 9th grade which would be 1983-4? The first three books in that series where awesome, to this day they are some of the best books I have ever read. And I don't read a lot of fantasy books. In fact those where the only ones! However, one of these days I am going to read Tolkien's books.

LOL you are correct monfrar!!! I caught the Dragonlance forgotten relms mix-up right after i clicked submit and rushed to edit. The staff of the magus/magi i vasiliated back and forth with as i wrote it , but i figured it a singular/plural grammer issue.

The robe change time frame has me a little perplexed though. riddle me this (as you are probably correct) he went in for the test, failed, made a deal with the dark diety (forget his name), eyes turned golden hour-glass received the staff and came out eithr a gray robe or black robe... right? I guss i will check out your link, see if its in there.

But anywho...thx for pointing all that out poindexter....lol

I have read alot os fantasy sagas, BTW dragonlance, I read them in the early 90's while i was in the ARMY.

this series was by far the most impacting to me of them all. Elminster in Greyhawk/FR was a scribe compared to Raistlin and fizban (remember him.. crazy old mage that seemed to show up @ opportune times - turns out he was a god!) he was a riot.

No other power mage compares to raistlin..... in casting ability and intelligence. who else could beat a God at his opwn agame and then turn around and PWN all the other dieties........

Raistlyn was a red robve going into the test, during the test he faced Fistandilas(spelling) to which he made a deal in order to aquire power and power is what he wanted as he was weak and frail(the test made him even more so). The deal he made was that fistandilas would pass unto him some power so that he may pass the test. A result of the deal was he was given teh hour glass eyes. Eye in which everything whithered away to nothing as the vastage of time passes for everything. During the Twins trilogy, he adoned the Black robes once he completed his master plan. Which was to turn the tables on Fistandilas while he was at his strongest. He basiclly obsorbed Fisty and all his powers. It wasn't until The Dragins of Summers Flame that he went full circle and dawned the white robes and became what he wanted most, a God.

Soo your proposal is that if we ever get epic levels - very unlikely in the forseeable future anyways - it should be only available to bored old vet farts and powergamers with no life playing 24/7 to grind stuff?

The idea is good, a special themed challenge. To make it a prereq for levelling, fail.

i think i vomited a little...:D..... Not at all man..... Just saying that at some point xp should not be the sole determining factor for gaining level. most of the old farts use uber gear and zerging to farm xp in my opinion. to me for the epic levels xp should not equal level. xp from quests, atainment of rare artifacts, and on the fly skill (raw chops) should grant you the epics, otherwise its all just a grind.

all in all i hear ya.. good point but i think it would work if done correctly.

Nice summary man thx, just reading that brings back awesome memories of reading that series. truly great series..........

DUDE, remember fizban's ring? that relic was the first tip off that he was Palidine(god of good). not many sorcs have a golden ring with the image of a dragon on it that talks to you... oh and by the way..... it was his "familiar" an elder (lawful good) gold dragon! That dragon was totally bad a$$!!!!

another great series was "incarnations of immortality"

Man, I absolutely HATED those dragonlance books. Whiney and wimpy! Who was that redheaded half-elf guy who was always crying about being a half elf?

"So-and-so took a sip from his mug of ale. He put the mug back on the table and noticed it was half full. It was half full just like his life is half full from being a half elf. He slipped back into the depression he was trying to quell by drinking ale. Curse my half elven background!"

And then that wizard guy who was just a BIT too proud of being a wizard? That's some good writin' there!

Tavernkeeper - Heya Wiz, can I getcha a drink?
Wizard - I am magi.
Tavernkeeper - Well that you are! How about an ale?
Wizard - I am magi.
Tavernkeeper - Uh..yeah, we pretty much covered that. Some food maybe? I've got some excellent goat-kabobs ready to be served.
Wizard - I am magi
Tavernkeeper - Ooookaaay...maybe I'll just let you sit here until you decided what you want, ya half-baked looney!
Redheaded Elf - I take offense to that comment! My life is only half fulfilled due to my half elven heritage yet you make jokes? I'm half inclined...doh! There now you've got me saying it!
Wizard - I am magi.

LOL -

we have a couple guilds in thelanis that would fit the wizard part in your little skit there.....

Tavernkeeper - Heya Wiz, can I getcha a drink?
Wizard - I am Legion.

BACK TO THE OP
Great idea, run around like crazy running any quest you can, get skill points and feats, but you can't level up until you complete quest X and quest X can only be run by level appropriate gamers, so you can't be dragged through, by higher levels or have run it a million times. No normal hard elite setting, no solo option for the level quest/test. Along with that have most quests locked until the player is level appropriate, and have gear drop scaled accordingly (didn't you just hate getting that ML 4 sword when you were level 2 and had to wait soooo loonnnggg to use it)

So you enter the new player experience no bypass option, run various quests in the village to get to Level 2, before the gate will unlock to allow access to the explorer area.

you play around a bit in the explorer area and must run misery's peak before you get level 3.

level 3 you now have access to Stormreach harbor, in the harbor certain quests are locked until level 4.

Level 4 the remainder open and a final quest/test get level 5 and access to the market place.

Level 5 and 6 are the market place quests the various houses only unlock after level 7 and so forth. Of course this would mean rescaling the difficulty of some quests. Following through, Three barrel cove has a quest/test that unlocks the giant hold running the Reaver unlocks the Merchantum desert, the Demon queen unlocks the Vale, the shroud would then unlock the Reavers refuge, completing Stealer of souls unlocks shavarath and so forth
