Dave Arneson, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, has passed away due to cancer. Dave created the first campaign called Blackmoor and later worked with Gygax to create the original Dungeons and Dragons. His family has requested that you not send or contact them in any way. They would like some private time to be left alone.
Our thoughts are with you Dave, thanks for helping create a wonderful game.
For more information on Dave Arneson please visit his Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Arneson)

Hadn't heard of him before, but he'll be sadly missed.
So sad. I like the Blackmoor campaign. Still have the original supplement. Will have to get it out and read it tonight.
:(
May he rest in light perpetual.

Too bad , he had more to do with the creation of D&D than two brothers who were much better at putting their spin of how it started back then.
Smooth Sailing to Blackmoor......

Sad to see him go. I had the great pleasure of having him as a teacher in one of my classes in college.

I meet Dave years ago, seems almost like yesterday, I still remember the first game and my cleric named...
Farewell my friend. Our games of DGUTS will be missed, and was so looking forward to the next addition.

He had a huge involvement in the development of the original D&D and will be sorely missed.

Sad. Dave was the driving force behind the simplication of the game to more of a "parlor game" style for family players.
Nothing will ever be as good as Basic D&D and the KEEP ON THE BORDERLANDS!
BREE YARK to you Dave Anderson.

He also does a guest DM spot in DDO a la Gary Gygax. I think in Threnal.
Here's the article from back in the day mentioning it:

He will be missed, as much as Gary is. :(

Escapist is reporting that Dave has not passed away, but is instead in Hospice care (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90765-R-I-P-Dave-Arneson-UPDATE).
He is, in fact, alive and being cared for in a hospice. James Maliszewski at Grognardia says: "I am both glad to hear that Dave is not dead, as I was led to believe, and rather mortified at my having posted this information before it had been confirmed by a second source. I had no reason to doubt my original source, given his close proximity to Dave, but apparently I should have."
The sentiment is shared by all of us, James. We're glad to hear that for the time being, Dave Arneson is still with us.

Oops - this also shows a problem with small nuggets of info becoming sent web-wide without independent sourcing. That article you read on _____? Make sure that you find the source. That said, mistakes happen, and at least in this case the end result is positive.

Ya, it is very difficult to verify when people will pick up the story and not source their information. I found a few places that mentioned it, and only one linked to their source (which wasn't the original). In retrospect, it is looking like it all came from grognardia.
Sorry for forwarding incorrect information.

Not blaming you at all, hope it didn't come out that way. What I mean, and what you said as well in your latest post, is that I agree - too many sites just "yank" information from original sources without providing specific links to those sources. Even when they do mention where they got it from, you'll see "...as reported in _____". Trace it back to the source and you realize that the story doesn't necessarily have much sourcing at all.
You see the same thing on gaming sites: Gamasutra will report something and within an hour its on GameSpot, IGN, Kotaku, Engadget, 1up, Game Informer, etc - all essentially parroting the original information! If that one writer is wrong, then it's up to the other sites to do some sourcing of their own in order to prevent problems like this from happening.
Same thing happens in the national news media too, but I don't want to get into that...
Man another one of the great old ones has passed a very sad thing to hear indeed.

No worries from here. I grabbed it and ran too, til *someone* mentioned getting confirmation... (Thanks, T)
Then I started looking, and realized that one site was the ONLY one at that point mentioning it. :o
Still, "in hospice" is still a sad thing. :(

I wasn't offended at all, Jerry. It does make me want to improve though, so thanks. I'll be sure to track things down better (or at least try) in the future. :) I REALLY do appreciate the advice.

You have if you've run Thernal. That is who was doing the narration. Really hope he actually he gets a byline in the set much like Gygax got with Delera's. Maybe even a memorial.

I just ran Threnal several times for a guildie, but I have the DM voice off permanently because of some of the really cheesy moments in some of the quests (you know the ones). If there had been a credit like in the beginning of Delera's I would have turned it on for that series.
