View Full Version : Do I even have a chance?

I like this game and just reactived my account from taking a year off. I use to play when the game first came out. I wanted to start a new toon, besides my main which is a dwarf cleric that I enjoy a lot.

I looked through a lot and all the changes, that have been made and added, as well as mod 9 stuff.

I was thinking of making a rogue. But there are a few things. I play when I can due to work, school etc... (we are all busy)

I lack a few things that seem key to me in making a toon.

-I do not have the 32 point buy unlocked, I have been trying hard on my 15 cleric to get to 1750 but I am still like 600 away.

-I do not have access to tomes. I cannot put an extra 2 or 3 points to all my stats, my main just hasnt found them.

-I cannot count on having a +6 item for my key stats, my main only has a +4 wis item as his highest and a few 2s and 3s, and i think a +4 con item too.

That in mind, I was going to make a drow rogue. I play the pen and paper game also, I understand the game mechanics very well.
str 10
dex 16
con 14
int 16
wis 10
cha 12

I am maxing out dex , so I figure 16 base, 4 lvl ups, 4-6 item, 3 rogue, 3 drow enhance, I can expect about a 30 dex or so, which is and does seem high, but all my other stats will close to the same, +2 items are common enough though at the least.

I was going to splash into fighter at 2.

Feats are something like, TWF. Weapon finesse, skill focus UMD, toughness, maybe combat expertise and OsTWF

I am set on skills and know what to take. I was also going way of the mechanic to help make sure as a trap monkey I can get my party past traps. This way I makeup for what i lack in stats. And as a twf rogue I can maybe dish out some sneak attack damage, but I am not sure I will be able to hit the AC of higher end game mobs like the 15/16 instances.

I won't have 500 hp and wont have a 95 AC
So with all this info, and what seems to me a pretty nice build I ask...

Do I even have a chance in being a good character and being a useful/successful party member beyond level 5 or 10? with my "gimped" rogue that dosnt have access to extra stat ups??

Easily a viable build, at high levels your to hit will be plenty. Although, you might want to hook up with a guild and find a chartable friend for soem +6 items, they're pretty much a dime a dozen.

As for your build you're going to want ITWF and GTWF more than sf umd or CE and way of the mechanic is a waste with your int, I would go assassin. Also if you haven't made it yet, lower your con to 12 and raise your dex

Don't worry about +6 stat items. I can't even give most of the ones I've pulled away, and I think most others are in the same boat. Just let people know that you just came back after being gone awhile, and they'll probably be glad to hook you up with the items you need.

As for the stats, I'd personally stick with the 14 Con and 16 Dex. I'd probably drop Int to 14 and bump up your Str by a few points instead.

Edit: Oh, and my rogue is still an original 28pt Halfling. Yes, he's eaten a few +2/+3 tomes now(Str, Con, Dex, Int, and Cha actually), but even without those, he'd still be viable. Don't worry, a drow will be just fine.

IMO, if you don't even have +6 stat items, I would spend some more time running high end content with your main. While I see no issues with your build (and you are absolutely fine w/o +2 tomes by the dozen), melees are still much more equipment dependent than casters. (and rogues even moreso)

After some more time gathering cash to hit the AH and generally looting a couple things, I think you would find leveling and outfitting your rogue a more enjoyable experience.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I can help you knock out that favor. Just look for me online. I can also hook you up with plenty of +6 stat items that are ML 15 (I keep the ML 13's for me sorry). Just let me know what you need. If you see me online and want to favor grind let me know. If I can't run it with you I can at least unlock it for you. Since all my alts have 1750 favor so I shouldn't need to change toons.

Just look for any toons named after a beer and send me a tell.

That is if your on Khyber I couldn't see what server you're on.

Almost forgot, what server are you actually on? Also, I'd go with Assassin after you hit level 12. Mechanic can be useful at lower levels, but Assassin will be much more fun and useful after level 12. In the current high-level content, the traps aren't nearly as hard, but the mobs are much tougher.

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys. It appears I am not as doomed as I thought. Only play will tell.

I do need to play my main more, and get into some newer content for those items. I may have funds to buy a tome, not sure how much they run.

I might go assassin, I have some levels to think about it.

I do play on Khyber, my main is Olric Ungart, dwarf cleric.

I made my drow rogue, name is Rhandos Shadowstrike.

I am gonna play a lot this weekend because of the xp bonus, good chance to get to 16, on Olric and level my alt fast. more DnD and nuts to school work I say when there is xp to be had.:D

I'd pull 2pts out of con and bump cha to 16...that said, 2 out of int and 2 out of wis works also, and is probably a better overall choice. Grab force of personality and your will save will thank you...plus, you'll hit a 39 UMD that much sooner, and end up with one fewer stat item to find a spot for.

First thing if you havnt capped your high lvl do that before hand.... shroud gives ya about 10k plat a pop which can hook ya up with a +1 tome (char) or (int) anything else is usually 25k or more.... but the 10 str is a bit low for my opinion, maybe 12str with 12 in con? (BTW, a heavy load makes you loose evasion AND dex bonus to ac)

On another class, maybe. On a finesse rogue, 14 con + 10 str > 12 str + 12 con by a large margin.

Strongly agree with capping a character to fund alts, though.

Personally i had 8 str and 8 con, but thats not a recomendation for a new player :D

12 con should be plenty, i dont think a 14 is worth the 4 build points personally.

I'm not a fan of dumpstats. That said, best rogue on argo was. :)

I don't either, but the OP is a casual and would likely want the extra breathing room from the con. Really depends where he wants to go with this and what his playstyle might be. If I were rolling a drow these days, I'd go 10/16/12/16/10/16 (assuming my math is right...).

Going to try and cap my main this soon, I think the 14 con also might no be worth the points, better off in str, and cha I think.

Ideally I should not have aggro anyway. but unexpected things can happen, but toughness can offset that especially with the enhancements for it also.

there are just too many situations where everyones being hit for you to not take toughness on a squishy melee like a rogue; if you don't, you won't have the hp to contribute in melee in the situations where doing so is most important and where all the mobs do wide-ranging cleave attacks that will hit you no matter where you stand.

QFT, especially if raids continue to look like shroud 4/5 and VoD; you'll want as much HP as you can get.

Yikes, I can see I might get into trouble, then. I have just started the game (yesterday), come from LoTRO, where I am ridiculously balanced in stats, to here. I decided to try something different, first character, Rogue, Elf, 8 str, 16 dex, 8 con, 16 int, 8 wis, 16 cha. Force of Will off the bat, Two Weapon Fighting at level 3 (my current level). I can see I could have trouble, with 3 dump stats, probably not my best idea.

I like LOTRO a lot, but this game has a different play style completely. Hopefully this thread helps new players like you.

Yeah, an 8 Con right off the bat is just asking for trouble. There are much better classes and stats to start off with. I would suggest browsing through the forum and finding a build and class you like before going too far. Either a human cleric or a human/dwarf/WF fighter/barbarian are probably the easiest starting classes.

Ha ha. I was going to say leave Cha at 10 and put points into Dex or Wis. I think the difference between Wis and Cha has to be more for Force of Personality to be worth it. :)

You could pull 2 out of Wis and put then in Cha, and take 2+ levels of Paladin instead of Fighter. That should easily give you a 22 Cha (14 base, +1 Tome, +1 Paladin enhancement, +6 item) for +6 to saves at high levels. I hate failing saves so this is what I did.

I actually think the easiest is a WF Paladin/Fighter because you are immune to so many things. Take Adamatine Body, Paladin levels up to 3 at least (for fear immunity) and then Fighter or Paladin after that, depending on taste. Getting Feared or Held is the easiest way to die at low levels (besides Scorching Ray/Fireball to the face of course). :)

Sorry I wasn't able to run with you the other day. I was in a Shroud run and was logging off after that. I looked for you when I came back on later but couldnm't find you. My offer still stands. I'll help you level or get your favor just send me a tell.
