View Full Version : Ranger/Rogue/Wizard or Possibly Ranger/Monk/Wizard

I want to build a 6 ranger/2 rogue/12 wizard. The idea is to use tensers transformation as well as other tools like teleport, dd, stoneskin, fire shield, greater hero, true seeing, prot from elements, plus mind fog, cloud kill, wall of fire and some other fun stuff lower down the spell ranks. This build includes evasion and umd as well as tempest and twf kopesh. (I'm have also pondered monk instead of rogue but not sure if it will work.) At least that's my wish =) My chosen race is drow but now this concept character needs some help to get started. First I would love it if someone could help me figure out the feats skills and such. I am thinking 15 15 12 14 8 10 correct me if i'm off on the points a hair the game is down for a short time. Another thing what are the major pros and cons my highest level toon right now is a 12 wizard and i'm seeking higher insight to game play late game. My goals are fun, good soloablity, good group support through dps and some rogue skills in a pinch.

Well....
Have you considered a WF? Wiz 12 gives reconstruct I think.

Tensers is ok, but not so great IMO.
You cannot cast spells with it on.
By the time you can cast it (esp on a multiclassed build) you should already be wearing stat items of around +6, so the stat boosts from the spell are meaningless.
Divine Power (clickies/scrolls) are usually better.

Stoneskin is avail on wands.....only need 1 lvl of Wiz to use wands.

Rog or Mnk?
Do you like doing traps? Do you like spending all your skill points on trap skills?
Rog does have UMD as a class skill.
But Mnk gives two feats.....and Wis bonus to AC.

Drow is ok.
But I think WF would get more out of this build.

anything other than WF will be tough to survive imo.
i have been working on this for a while and its tough to fit all the feats in. dont think i will start it until mod9 drops i we see te loot, cause gear will be important for this guy. lotsa tomes too. the idea is fun tho. there is a good thread in the wiz forums with info about multi wiz's

I appriciate the feedback thank you. I have decided to go monk if I do this and drow for the 32 pt build. Don't see a way to do it other wise but thanks and if anyone has any other feedback I would love to hear it =)

If you are choosing Drow it means you don't have 32 point builds unlocked. IMO the advice to go WF relies on having access to 32 point builds.

Your decision to go monk rather than rogue is probably the right one. Both will get you evasion. Monk will get you two additional feats and also let you apply WIS bonuses to AC. Your UMD will suffer, although I'm not sure the build needs UMD.

Biggest question I have is why take ranger all the way to L6? Tempest only provides a +2 to AC and your TWF isn't going to be all that great even with Tenser's unless you take additional TWF feats. You need to invest a lot into DEX at creation to qualify for the last feats (remember enhancements won't help you) and then need to put stat increases into DEX. Bottom line is that even with Tenser's you are not going to be all that scary.

Instead, only take ranger to L2 to get the first level of TWF. That way you are able to carry two weapons that help your spell casting and still use them in an emergency as weapons. Plus you'll gain a bonus DEX enhancement.

Then put remaining levels into wizard. You'll be a better wizard (more value to a group) and if you do use Tenser's then switch to handwraps and use your kung fu.

I guess what I really wanted was a 10% boost to attack speed as well as putting points into twf feats I am really going for a melee oriented character who has magic to assist him. Lots of self buffs and some added flavor being able to drop a firewall here and there even if it's not that powerful it adds dps. Might not be a viable build but looks fun. And being str based is important since I would like to deal damage. My dex would be 15 to start so a +2 tome at some point would fix my twf feat porblems I believe. My main issue that I have read is that tensors won't buff me enough to matter and that there are items that will surpass that bonus. The way it reads I get a +1 for ever level to hit like a fighter so that seemed pretty impressive for being able to self buff so well. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Be warned:
Any plan which has "Tensers Transformation" as one of the steps will fail.

That spell is a trap.

Yes, Tensers will bring you up to full BAB, which for a pure wizard16 means +8 to hit with his first swing, and even more on his 5th swing. But you can get full BAB from a Divine Power item instead.

DP clickies are what really killed the Tenser Transformation spell in DDO.

Have a 9wiz/6ranger/1 fighter WF.

First, 6 ranger gets you 2 levels of 2 wpn fighting, regular and improved. 6 ranger is great.

Second, I took fighter to get greater two weapon fighting at current cap. If I was re-rollling (which I might do) I would definitely go 2 rogue or 2 monk since you'll be able to get grtr 2 wpn fighting "SOON"tm.

Third, if Drow I would definitely go rogue. How are you going to self heal without UMD? Heal scroll ability will be huge for solo play. WF would be FAR better however as quickened reconstruct would be available at level 11 (not 12).

Fourth and most important. Tensor's blows. Get 3 or 4 pairs of 5charge divine power clickies and hit them regularly. Same attack bonus as Tensor's but can still cast. I have Feather falling boots of Divine Power5 on all my battle casters.

Really even with 28 pts I would recommed WF. You're gonna need the extra Con and the self healing CANNOT be beat for a heavy melee caster. (Trust me I have 3 eh lol).

It's almost always a mistake for someone with your inexperience to attempt a build with such divergent goals.

You should probably aim lower. Instead of getting TWF and Tempest (which will eat all your feats), just forget being a ranger at all.

You could go wiz14/rog2 or wiz15/barb1 or wiz16 and fight with a two-handed greataxe. That's a lot simpler to make work. (Even better might be a cle15/pal1 to cast Divine Power directly)

Thanks for the info i'm going back to the drawning board and going to use all of your advice to construct yet another doomed character =) jk . I will keep trying. Thanks for the advice
