View Full Version : Altering some PnP rules to suit DDO

I fully respect that DDO was created using general rules already in place in the pen and paper dungeons and dragons. I do believe that the fact that they two games work very differently needs to be acknowledged and that some tweaks to pen and paper rules would fit in very well with the reality of what DDO is.

Enhancements have made a major impact on DDO, but do not exist in PnP. There are builds specifically catered to DDO that people would probably not attempt in PnP. This is not a turn based game, and everything happens much quicker than it does in PnP. These are a couple of the reasons I think that blindly following the 'core' rules is not enough to make a full and lively playing experience.

I'd like to give a couple of suggestions, and I'd like to offer a place for others to voice theirs as well.

1. I think all dwarves should be given some kind of axe proficiency. Perhaps a class that doesn't normally start out with martial weapons could be granted either the handaxe or the battle axe. It's true that elves don't recieve an exotic weapon proficiency feat for free, but they can put their enhancements to use no matter what class they choose, while a dwarf is forced to aquire at least some weapon proficiency to use their enhancements.

2. I believe the halfling's diminished carrying capacity should be removed. In PnP you probably won't be carrying around 10 weapons and 5 pieces of armor to sell to the vendor. They already have lower starting strength and I think that's enough in DDO.
