View Full Version : Ranger Build Question

OK. Needing some advice based on some advise that I received. Basically, I am going to be playing in a duo (with my friend), and it was suggested that we go with Wiz/Rogue and as a second character, a Ranger/Monk. I am going to be doing the Ranger build, but wouldn't mind some help. (The thread with the advise is Here (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=177233))
A few details. We don't have Drow or 32 point build favor yet, and don't plan to have it before we start these characters. Also, it has been suggested that we both go with Warforged Race.
Thanks in advance.

It's not so easy to make a ranger/monk as a 28-pointer.
The reason people are suggesting that you take a splash of monk and rogue is that you can then get rogue skills and the monk bonus to AC, but with a 28-point character and lacking the resources of an established player, that's probably not a realistic option.
The warforged wizard/warforged melee is a good choice because arcane casters can heal warforged.
I would suggest a wizard/2 rogue and a pure barbarian, fighter, or ranger.
If you were to go the ranger/monk/rogue route you'd need to have a decent score in all 6 stats, and would probably need a +2 int tome and 32-point build to be able to afford all of the skills you need and not neglect another stat. A warforged takes a penalty in both charisma and wisdom, and as a 28-pointer, there is really no way to make it work.
Just going ranger/monk means you're probably shooting for a high AC and must have a high wisdom, dex, con and strength. If you want to take combat expertise for more AC, you'd then need quite a bit of intelligence as well. This means 5 attributes need to be fairly high. On top of that, you're going to probably need quite a bit of rare equipment to hit the AC marks you'll need to. You'll be giving up the capstone and a 5th favored enemy at level 20 to get some AC that you may not really be able to take advantage of.
If you just go ranger/rogue, attributes are still going to be tight. You'll have very few spell points if you take no wisdom, and you start with only 6 wis. You need charisma to help UMD, but start with only 6. You must fit in enough int to fill out the rogue skills. You don't need all of the gear that the monk splash does, but it's still very hard to make your attributes work.
If you ignore AC, it's much easier to split your attributes up on a melee, and the gear required becomes much simpler.

I am not opposed to pure Ranger build if that is the best option, given my 28 point build limitation. (and I don't have any tomes yet either).

you are better off getting 400 favor at least. Using a drow is better than just a 28 pointer. And it'll only take a couple of days to get as well

Yeah, drow would be better. They are essentially 32-pointers but have their extra 4points already assigned for you. With this you could do the hybrid ranger/rogue type much easier, but then your wizard friend won't be healing you and you might be quite a bit more squishy.

One thing you need to know about people who give advice...
They don't always understand your limitations as a new player. For example, nothing can beat a high level player using Wounding of Puncturing weapons. Veterans know this but they don't always understand how difficult it can be to obtain WoP weapons.
Most of the builds that are 'do it all' builds usually require more twinking, or more difficult to obtain items than a straight forward build that does one job and does it well. The do it all builds will not perform any single job as well as a build that just focuses on doing one job.
I'm not saying you got bad advice, but I just want to voice my opinion on the matter.

LOL Umm, in most quest DPS still out does WoPs, and most finesse builds lack the needed DPS to be effective on end bosses. And you seem to be forgetting the biggest factor, the person behind the toon.
It doesn't matter what gear you have, or how long you've been playing. It's how you use what you got, and in time your skill and gear will improve.
Outside of all that, the best advice I think I could give you is to push for Drow favor. Make a build that it suits, and that you think will be FUN TO PLAY. Play the game to have fun, picking up favor where you can. When you hit 1750, and it will take some time playing for fun and not straight grinding. Then rinse and repeate.

This is good advice for sure. Comparing WoP to DPS doesn't belong in this thread so I won't comment.
I definately think that going drow is worthwhile, you could roll up a cleric and a tank and practically duo your way to 400 favor in a day.... Then you can decide what you wanna do for long term.

I don't have time to look over in detail right now, but really quickly:
You have Listen and Spot, but don't really need both. Keep Spot and drop Listen. Those extra points would be much better spent in Balance.
Also, you will want to put a single point into tumble just to unlock the ability.

I like the thought, but Balance does not seem to be a class skill, so it costs 2 to 1 for skill points ... is that an issue?
Thanks again for all of your support!
