What spells can I generally use on orange names? Red names? Purple names?

damage spells, debuffs (curse/exhaustion/ray of enfeeblement)
Orange names you can banish, fod, etc as well.

Most bosses are immune to any kind of spell that would make them trivial which usualy includes all crowd control and many debuffs.
They want you to fight them not just lock them down and beat on them with immunity.

Orange bosses have no special immunities.
Red and purple bosses are immune against all crowd control and debuff spells, except waves of exhaustion. Also, the concealment part of cloudkill works, but not its other effects.
Most players consider the blanket immunities a design flaw.

I don't have any problems with blanket immunities on bosses and raid bosses. It's just a design flaw when common trash mobs have blanket immunities and/or are red named for no real purpose. Best example: Reaver's Refuge, especially Enter the Kobold.
