View Full Version : 1 Barb vs 1 Fighter splash?

So having scaled the heights to (almost) level 4, it's quickly becoming time for me to take a splash that lets me use the decent weapons I've got.

Fighter (obviously) would give me one extra feat, but I've seen a few assassin builds that use a Barb splash.

So- as (eventually) an assassin Human 19 Rogue/1 Something, am I going to be short enough on feats that I should splash fighter for the extra one, or does Barb rage and the faster run help out more?

(Is barb rage the same as the rage pots btw? ie it doesn't stack if I have a +4 str item on? I assume it's differnt, but have never played a barb)
And does the speed boost stack and apply while sneaking (ie does 30%striding +haste+ barbarian speed+ faster sneaking 4 all work together?)

Thanks for any info/suggestions you can provide!
(Not interested in splashing monk, as I unfortunately have fewer decent monk weapons than rogue weapons)

Depends on your playstyle. On paper, the extra feat from fighter wins. Personally, I love the barb splash because I love running speed. +10% and access to tier I sprint boost for 1 AP. Love it. The one shot of barb rage isn't really even worth putting on your toolbar, though, since it knocks you out of subtle backstabbing.

Edit: to your run speed question, innate abilities and AP stack with everything (so barb running, sprint boost, rogue faster sneaking, etc). Haste does NOT stack with striders though; so 30% before haste 40% with haste. With Acrobat II and barb splashes my rogues can (while boosted) outrun monks.

Here’s the easy way to solve your dilemma:

Answer this question: What feats do you want your rogue to have by level 20? If taking a level of fighter will get you all the feats you want then take a level of fighter.

Go both?

Rogue 18 / Barb 1 / Fighter 1 ?

He might want that last Sneak Attack die and the last rogue special ability.

Wow, thanks for the quick response time.

For better (or worse) I'm plaling on sticking with 19 rogue levels, both for the maximum sneak attack and because I want to try assassinate (which I have no idea if it will be worth it or not, but I think it'll be fun)I'd stay pure rogue, but I don't have and can't afford the AH rapiers/shortswords etc.

Also not really sure what feats I want, suppose I ahould plan that out before asking for advice..

I think I'm thinking that if I have faster sneaking 4 and barb faster running, I might be able to keep up with a party
while staying in sneak, so I can use asssassinate.

Have no idea if that would be the case though

-You'll 10% movement speed, few more Hit points and Rage, which depending on how you play your Rog may not be a good thing. Ie; if you max UMD for casting, not possible when Barb raged. You could also invest an AP in Barb Sprint boost for a stacking increase to your running speed or Barb Tough I.

Fighter you get your feat, Fighter Tough I, (you wont be needing the the haste boost, could use AC boost but not much play in that. So I can see why people may go the Barb route.

(Is barb rage the same as the rage pots btw? ie it doesn't stack if I have a +4 str item on? I assume it's differnt, but have never played a barb)
- Barb Rage stacks with Rage pots, which stack with stat enh. Stat pots do not stack with stat Items, the higher will apply. Ie; Bulls Str pot gives +4 Enh to Str, Ogre Power Gloves give + 4 to Enh Str, same type of enh, wont stack. There are pots that can be traded with collectables that will stack.

And does the speed boost stack and apply while sneaking (ie does 30%striding +haste+ barbarian speed+ faster sneaking 4 all work together?)

- Never made a build like this, but I beleive some should be applied, similar to sneaking w/ Haste vs. w/o.

Answers in red.

Pretty much up to whether or not you want the Fighter Class feat.

Assassin is a lot of fun to play. However, I keep hearing that Thief-Acrobat is a blast too. (Only have 1 pure rogue ATM so I’m not the best person to ask.)

I'd stay pure rogue, but I don't have and can't afford the AH rapiers/shortswords etc.

Fortunately, there’s only one rapier you need on a rogue! RADIENCE II. Everything else is an off hand weapon.

FS-IV is already really, really close to keeping up with the party. I’ve found that keeping your sneak and assassinate abilities hotkeyed is very effective. The biggest problems with assassinate in group play is foes that cleave and foes that magically move out of your swing arc.

You will also get addicted to “double taps”. It’s that magical moment where 2 creatures fall victim to your assassinate ability.
