levels 1-8 my sorc feels useless
to many mobs that need a long lasting damage spell such as wall of fire or melfs are immune to acid and fire

levels 1-11 my cleric feels like he is waging a war with health bars with no soloing ability
blade barr is my favorite spell.

Then they are both being built and played wrong, especially the Cleric.

Levels 1-8, turn in Amber Vials, Khyber Prayer Pamphlets, Glittering Dust, Powdered Blood, Scholarly Notes, and Glass Phials for an assortment of free scrolls & wands to expand your spell selection. Sure, they have lousy DCs, but sometimes you get lucky and pull a wand of Acid Arrow, and even those Web wands can be handy at 3rd level (when sorcs can't have the spell yet).

If you're leveling too fast to bother with this sort of thing, what difference does it make that the sorc doesn't come into its own until later?

Try CC spells...you won't feel useless.

Order's Wrath ,Chaos Hammer and Greater Command are your friends when soloing a mid level Cleric.

CC FTW always.

Well, to be fair, that's not easy for a sorc. Wizards can experiment with spells and play with a wide range of different ones. Sorcs pretty much have to pick a core of generically useful spells and come up with creative ways to use them. Sure, they can change one spell every three days, but unless you only run one quest a week, that's not a lot of flexibility ;)

So, they have to rely on wands and scrolls for diversity....which tends to be a bit frustrating, especially in the case of any spell with a save :)

Then there are the low level clerics. Sure, they can take plenty of spells, but until they know the quests well, they end up hoarding their power for heals, and not getting to play mch with all those spells they COULD be casting if they weren't saving all their power. Again, there are wands & scrolls, but, again, there's the save DC issue.

Thing is, adding more spells to the available choices wouldn't really change this. Making offensive wands and scrolls useful would help some. Maybe the devs will consider that sometime.

They just pick from a subset. I dunno, my first Arcane was a Sorc, I wasn't particularly uber or knowledgeable at the time, and I did great--one of my best times in game was waltzing through Stormcleave with a group and just making everything dance.

It seems to me that he's just focusing on damage spells, and that's his problem. It'd be nice if you could do that at all levels, but it just doesn't work out at certain points during your career.

Yeah, I agree, that's why I was saying he needs to man up and just try some new things. Gotta suffer to learn sometimes.

Long lasting damage spell? Try to work the monsters for you. i.e. suggestion, charm monster, charm person. Make sure you have dispel too or someone else have break enchantment.

At such low levels, you can also buff yourselves or the tanks up with haste/blur/heroism/stoneskin/divine power clickies and then held or CC (using glitterdust, etc.) the monsters in someway and then kill them with a puncturer.

Since the energy admixture, energy substitution feats and the sorceror prestige enhancement savant lines aren't available until module 10, you'll have to wait for a substitude for lightning wall.

I made a Wiz first. So when I made my Sorc I had a good idea which spells were effective.
Hypno, Otto's, Web, Charm person...all great. Melf's is a good long term damage spell.

You can practically solo STK with Charm person and a high Cha. (although bring healing pots)

I love Hypno at range and close to use Otto's.....then leave for melees to finish off.

I spammed Hypno, Web and Scare over and over again in Tangle Root....and the party took almost no damage. (although on elite I think they have too many HD for Scare)

Most of these spells do not cause you any agro....and your squishy butt will stay alive longer anyway.
