i am a little bored at work so i have a question -

what is your preferred type of player-type party make up?

the way i look at it there are several types of players

BOSS - a leader type - know the quests, barks out orders, grabs any quest items needed, basically thinking his way thru the game, explaining it as you go.

WHIZ - a skill type - also knows the quests, but has less patience. does the hard stuff with his geeked out toon. make it look easy but offers little to the rest of the party in the way of info.

HACKER - a grunt type - gets his/her pleasure from destroying everything in sight. melee, caster, whatever; this one does the heavy lifting and enjoys it. left to their own devices the hacker is hard pressed to find the shrine sometimes tho.

COMEDIAN - a social type - talks a lot, knows a lot, does a lot; but only as an afterthought. spends a lot of time talking about builds, forums, gear, cracking jokes, whatever.

NOOB - a n00b type - yeah

I am sure i missed some, and feel free to add to it, but regardless of class played, what type of players do you prefer in a typical 6 man?

You forgot the TOUR GUIDE - knows the quests (including all optionals and every single collectible node), insists on taking the NOOB to every point of interest in the quest to show them around, always insisting on going back to fetch said NOOB when they get lost/wait for them when they fall behind, and chatters nonstop about the encounters, decor, and how everything fits/doesn't fit Eberron lore ;)

Um... None of the above?

I tend to mostly play with friends that I know in real life.

Several of them have no qualms about putting any mishmash of characters together in a group and trying a quest. We also don't mind duo-ing or trio-ing quests even if it makes them a bit tougher. We like the challenge.

I have also finally found a guild I enjoy and it seems most of them are fairly laid-back.

Depends on the quest.

For most low and mid level quests, don't need a Boss type, unless you have the Noob type, in which case a Boss is essential as the Noob will not just know what to do at each encounter.

A comedian type is also good, but should only make references to builds, gear, and/or forums as fuel for a joke. Jokes should not be at the expense of the Noob in the party, either, although the Boss is fair game.

For me, running quests late at night in groups where nobody is talking at all is kind of depressing. Was in a tangleroot run a week or so ago and about part four nobody had said a word yet. I asked why everyone was so quiet and one guy said its a TR run, what's to say? At least tell a joke or something. I also ran with a cool group, one of the characters was another party members wife, who was new and on a slow computer so lots of lag for her, but they kept up some good infield chatter. Also in the group was another couple with a southern US accent who exchanged a lot of friendly banter as well. It wasn't the uberest group I have ever been in but it was fun.

Aside from limited, specific questions for the purposes of comparison on a newer type build, one type I could do without completely is the 'my skills are here' type. On joining a party as a rogue, they always say what they have for search and disable, and then pause for you to tell them how awesome they are. If they are a melee, they want everyone to know how many HP they have, what their STR or to hit numbers are, and what weapon they are swinging, with the same pause afterward for your upcoming adulation. If a sorc, how many SP they have is an urgent subject for discussion.

Would much rather run with someone like the Bard I grouped with a while ago, who was intimidating everything and not taking much damage. Finally someone asked him how he did it, and he just said it's in my build. Persistent questioning resulted in him very reluctantly revealing an insanely high blocking DR, then explaining how he got it that high. He also explained how the few times he did get damaged was due to hitting intimidate and not getting his shield up quick enough. This was a guy who knew what he was doing but didn't feel the need to tell everyone in the party how awesome he was, he just quietly did his thing.

Ah, the MARQUEE: Always has to announce the character's highlights (84 AC, firewalls that crit for 2130 damage, etc.). Usually has stats posted in bio ("You hit Arraetrikos for X damage. You killed Arraetrikos!", etc.)

Hate them!

They are usually the same people who tell you what you should do with your character. Often make me feel like I should tell them what to do with their mouse.

i will include the sub-type that can really be any type

BOOZER - a party type - this dude is havin a real good time, maybe too good. a few too many beers and the words start to slur, then no voice chat altogether, then he is fallin of cliffs and sitting down at the rez shrine. this also applies to the over-smoker who ends up making too many runs for munchies or eats said munchies over voice chat. can replace the COMEDIAN easily.

unless its a tough quest/setting i ALWAYS like having a BOOZER around for laughs

Typical Marquee quote: Do you realize that with your build and stats you are going to be a full 3 AC and 12 HP lower than optimal? Reroll right now, loser. God, people are sooo stupid except me of course.......

Class Clown - the guy that goes out of his way to make sure everyone is laughing, even if at his expense (or more likely, especially at his expense). As a side note, this is the majority of KTL. It's a wonder we ever get anything accomplished in game...

Fun social laid back people.
Group decisions. A group that just syncs up and needs no direction.

I do like to zerge, if we're capable. But I also like tactics to minimise damage if that's what we need to complete the quest.

My favorite groups have needed no leaders. Everyone made suggestions or just did what they do best and usually knew what was needed at the time.

A group that watches others on the map and health bars to know what is going on is very important.

No bossy types.
No grandstanders.....well not arragant ones anyway.

I do like some friendly kill count competitions.....but unless I'm on my Rogue, I usually lose those. :(

I don't mind noobs....am tolerant with kids.
Don't like the same thing eveytime.
Don't mind failure if the group was fun....but prefer to succeed of course.

Like to hang out with powerful people, but not so powerful that I feel useless.
Also like to hang out with people that are not as good as me, so I can feel more useful.

Like odd groups....as opposed to balanced ones. All Rgr groups esp.

I would say that I run around in a group that always has a Comedian (myself) and a Whiz / Hacker (a friend on the server). The rest tend to just follow our lead like lemmings. Maybe by designed or by accident but the others in the group usually don't say anything cause me and my friend are constantly filling the airwaves with crude jokes and mocking each other.

There is no way you can top the fun/excitement/enjoyment of 12 'noobs' in a raid that none of them have ever done before.

THAT is DDO at it's best. :)

Vod or Tempest spine it doesnt matter aslong as your so short manned or low level that its freaking hard to complete

Me class clown aka foundtehtrap (i mean come on the name says it all when we had a rouge with a horrible spot in monstary of scourpian instead of him dien then waiting for death penalty to go away i just ran into every single trap their was to promptly be ressed by the cleric and do it again XD)
Whiz
Whiz
Whiz
Whiz
Noob

And thats the fun times
I crack jokes the noob dies and the whiz's just keep on mowing down the mobs so i feel like im uber
It was hilarous cuz the noob died And i cept myself busy by reconstucting the whiz's and hasting them
And heal scrolling the noobs (yes to be a Whiz in my book you either have to have 2 wop rapiers 3 keen smiters and 8 vorprals or be a WF with a min2 and 40 str (i like the latter more))

I prefer the zerg through the whole quest with a bunch of guildies myself. Although we do try and form choke points for the noob to catch up in that off chance we do bring an noob along.

Found a new one last night.

The Meth Head.

Always behind the group. Uses voice exclusively and apparently doesn't/can't read party chat, even though he is the only one using a mic. Sounds like he has been kicked in the head more than once by either a horse or a mule. Has a wide knowledge of street drugs, which he will discuss at length with himself once someone asks for 'Fighter Crack'.

The meth head also will draw aggro to himself a lot, go afk without notifying the party both inside and outside the quest, and expect the melee types to chase after a mephit or troll that he is kiting with his magic missile wand while he runs in wide, random circles.

The meth head also has a lot of questions. Keep in mind this was a level 7-9 party running through CO6 and Greymoon. Here are some common ones...

Are we done yet? (Two minutes later) Are we almost done yet?

How many more parts are there? (Two minutes later) How many more parts are there?

How do you sneak? (Explained where to find feat in character sheet and move to hot bar) I don't have any empty spaces on my hotbar.

Is there a way to get a first person view? (After the third time asked, it was suggested that if you get really really close to the screen and squint a little it is like a first person view). That doesn't work.

Whats a good end reward? (What do you have listed?) Lots of them, man. (Like what?) Like a whole page of end rewards. Whats worth the most? (What do you need?) I don't know, like stuff. (See what they do, and pick the one you want the most.) What's good for a caster? (Somewhat frustrated...'Stuff.')

The Meth Head also has a rapier wit. For example.....

(After running into the middle of the room, aggroing mephits, and coming back hot causing a near wipe) Wow, that was close. It was pretty trippy watching all them red bars drop like that. Y'all shoulda had fire resist or sumpin.

(After going afk unannounced between chapters)
What door do I go in? The face one? Oh yeah, dude, that totally looks like a face what with them teeth and eyes and such. How come the back door don't look like an ass?

I wish you guys would stop healing them trolls while I am killing them (kiting them with Magic Missile wand) it's gonna take me forever to kill these green bastards like that.

(While fighting Mephits) I can't see! Oh wait, it's better now. I can't see! ***! Oh wait it's better now. I can't see! etc. etc.

(Bard out of manna, sings two songs, says no manna for haste so you're up dude) Oh all right, here I come to save the day again.

The Meth Head also occasinally bursts into song during brief breaks in the questing while others are taking care of bio, smoking, etc.

'Song, song of the south, sweet potato pie an' a shut my mouth'
'If yer gonna play in Texas, ya gotta have a fiddle in the band'
'I am IIIIIrrrrrroooooon Maaaaaan...............'

Every group should have one of these.
