Discuss the upcoming Module 9 feature: updated public chat channels!

Here are the details, as mentioned in Kate Paiz's Letter To Players:

In Mod9, all instances of a public area, like the Market, will be routed to the same general tab, and we’ve added an advice and trade channel to each of the public areas as well. You’ll even still be in the public general channel if you enter a dungeon in that area, like the Quickfoot Hideout in the Market. You can customize this in the Options Menu if you don’t want to still hear public chat in the private instance, but the option will now be open to you (and will default to include you in the larger community). This change should help players find groups, get advice and sell things during non-peak hours and just improve overall the general access to other people in the area.

I think I will have to test this one out in game to really know what it's all about. Sounds cool though.

I think this should be ok.

I sort of got that meh feeling to, glad you dont have to pay attention to it cause it would suck being in a dungeon and having your chat spammed with "Dude looking for scales will pay x" or other inane nonsense that I ignore on general chat most of the time in the marketplace. Harbor is one thing and Korthos cause people are still new and you can end up helping out even while questing. But by the time a person is in the market the chat is generally used for selling purposes I dont even recall seeing people asking to group in there but could be wrong since I do tend to tune it out and switch over to guild or combat when I sign on.

I certainly hope you will have come up with something to prevent plat farmer to spam the chat with advertisement.

Otherwise, it will be ugly.

Communication is key for new players. I think its great for them, but many seasoned players will probably not care.

Yep. This seems a new player add....and....I am not sure it will work. Public chat becomes ignored pretty quickly in this game.

Here is hoping it works!

Hmmm. Probably misunderstanding it. Does this effect the /joinchannels currently set-up on servers?

If so, Ill be needing to change something in my sig.

You can still make custom channels but now you'll have some baked in channels that everyone starts in automatically... Now you don't have to try and rely on word-of-mouth to let new players know about the server help chat. Lots of other use to be had with built in trade channel: open chest... check for price straight from dungeon :)

Personally I love chatting in the harbor/market/korthos helping newbies, but pre-mod 9 I had to chose between staying in the instance lokking for questions (because most newbies don't know the custom channels) Now I can help newbies while I quest :D

To me it looks like general chat went from being your public area, to basically an open server wide chat room, so if you ignore it now, you will just continue doing the same. This was probably done to help trial accounts who can't send tells, but does open it up serious spam issues

Hello Tolero, It's me (Talish) I'm sure it doesn't surprise you that I've shown up in this thread. :D

From what I have read so far the advice channel is separate from the General chat correct?

Is this channel called advice? or help?

What do I need to prefix my messages with to be on advice channel?

Are hints being added to the game for new players about the advice channel? If not how are they being made aware of this channel?

Quote: "and we’ve added an advice and trade channel to each of the public areas as well" does this mean each area has it's own advice channel separate from the others?

I must admit you folks at Turbine are constantly challenging my ability to adapt just when I finally get a Help channel up and running extremely well. Sheesh. :p

If only there were a way for new players to communicate directly with others besides the ignored public chat...maybe like a /tell or something :(

I'm pretty sure it's called "advice" but I'll have to double check that (and if so, I imagine it would end up being /a, but again, will double check on that)

We'll be adding hints for new players in several places to help them know that it's there, even in the game :) (Piloto and I were working on in-game splash screen tips to include that)

Spam is a concern for us too, we want these channels to be fun not a tool for abuse by spammers

I'll track down some more info for you Monday so you can begin planning the welcome wagon for new players ^^ on the whole I think this will be a very good change for new players and helpful veterans find each other more quickly/readily :)

Does this means you've came up with an anti-spam tool otehr than the usual "Report Plat Farmer" option?

Thank you very much for the information. :)

I'll definitely look for more info on Monday. Khyber has an excellent help channel system set up now it shouldn't be too hard to get everyone to transfer over to the new channel should it prove worthwhile. I'll probably keep monitoring the help channel to pick up any stragglers.

Thanks again Tolero. I'll probably have many more questions for you in the near future so you may want to get prepared. ;)

It'd be nice if there would be a way to have Channel Moderators, for those times when people get out of hand in a channel..last week we had somebody go all out looking for a fight on how great WOW was on help channel..just not the place for that.. no matter the feelings, but really no way to control it other then to try to manually shift the discussion in another direction.. would have been nice to have been able to channel squelch or something..

...i hope it will be easy to set up a guild only or party only chat tab. Especally while questing. I don't care what is being said back in town when I'm trying to coordinate a raid.

I like this, should help some when making groups. Hopefully there is some way to prevent plat spam messages (will the report/squelch feature function on general chat?) and this will be nice when there is a pop up DM event. Someone can just say in general chat that devils are spawing in the marketplace, etc.
