View Full Version : Hirelings: Shrines, Switches, and Levers

Have you ever used a hireling and run into a shrine that he or she will not use no matter how m (http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt283/itsapuzzle/01100011.jpg?t=1243551874)uch you offer? Or a lever they won't pull no matter how often you ask? How about a switch or rune they won't activate even if you /dance2 for them?

Well, in Module 9 Codog has made a number of changes that will make your hireling friends more attentive to your needs. QA has been testing hirelings using stat runes, switches in walls, shrines, levers, and puzzle tiles across Xen'drik and things are looking pretty good. But there are a lot of switches out there in Eberron, just like ladders ...

If you know of a spot that a Hireling will not interact with objects (shrines, runes, levers, puzzle tiles, doors), post the location of where the object can be found here and we will test it and post a response in the thread! This is very similar to our previous thread about stuck ladders (please don't include ladder reports in this thread though). Like ladders, no one global change will fix ALL of the places a Hireling might have trouble, and we need to find them all by hand. Reporting the specific locations to us is a big help, and here's how you do it:

Reporting a location is simple. In a chat window type '/loc'. A location string will be displayed in your chat window. Cut and paste the response, along with the name of the quest, the name of the Hireling, and what kind of object it is in to a post in this thread in the following format:

Hireling: Kern Killer of All
Quest: Made to Order
/loc: r1 lx1976 ly96 i2049 cInside ox60.85 oy-211.97 oz-228.37 h45.0
What: Shrine

That's all we need. Questions? Comments? Anyone care for a mint? Thanks for your help!

Saw this last night:

Quest: Prison of the Planes
What: The Prison Levers throughout the quest

Even worse is if you do leave them outside a prison (so they dont insta die), if you forget to toggle them to "no action" mode... they try to come inside by bug zapping into the barrier. It was comical once... well... probably 3 times.

I dont have all of that info ready now sadly. Previously I started a thread on hireling feedback and cited numerous areas that need fixing. In 90% of the cases it was a cleric hireling, but occasionally a wiz/sorc one was tried, or a paladin. Ill be taking another character through this content at some point soon and can offer more specific details, but for now:

The Shrine in Threnal East at the 'first T' by the grated floor fire trap, hirelings wont use it.
The Shrine at the end of Crucible prior to the end battle, hirelings wont use it.
The Shrine in Trial by Fire across the broken floor jump prior to the end tunnel, hirelings wont use it.
The levers to PoP rooms, even after powered by energy spheres, hirelings wont use it.
I believe it was the first shrine in Chains of Flame, hireling wouldnt use, Ill check this one next few days.
The wisdom rune in Chambers of Insanity was unable to be hit by our clr hireling at level 11ish, I assume this was an issue with the rune functioning and not a lvl 11 cleric having too low a wisdom.

Thats all I can recall from memory, and I realize it might be less than ideal lacking loc information. As stated I have an alt leveling up, can retest and get loc info soon-ish, and will make it a point to do so. Thanks for this thread, I hope my other was read as well, it offered other specific feedback information. Thank you!

Ive seen this in some quests, will try to keep track of it next time it happens.. but on some they will recognise the healing shrine after you have them use a Ressurection shrine and use it and on others they will start popping potions after ressing until you click on the healing shrine and tell them to use it.. minor thing but was curious.. I thought ok makes sense to have to tell them to use both until i saw 1 go and sit at the healing shrine after I told him to use the ress shrine..

Well, I thought it was east but it very well could be west. Good news is this is the next chain Im going to take that alt I mentioned through so will be the first one I have actual locs for, except maybe Chains of Flame (NOT Offering of Blood, that was a typo and Ill edit to reflect that) which I may run sooner. So, within a few days, I can check Threnal again. There was more than one shrine there with issues, the T/trap one was the only I remembered for sure though. Ill try to hit them all as I go through, hopefully the group will cut me a bit of slack on being slow =p

Hirelings should not use a rest shrine unless explicitly told to do see. This behavior was updated in Mod 9 and you shouldn't see them doing it any longer. I'll keep an eye out.

A related issue is pathing for the hirelings in some of the quests. I am thinking in particular of "Tomb of the Burning Heart" (ironically, the one quest at that level where hirelings are most necessary for the soloist non-caster).

The hireling will follow one through the path that one takes along whichever branch. It will follow one through the first open area with skeleton archers perched. It will follow one all the way to the edge of the central "switch room" near the shrine. And then, it will inevitably decide that in order to reach you, rather than enter the central room with you, it will need to go back out through the entire branch and come back down the other side. Inevitably, it will die along with the way. You can pick up its stone and rez it at the shrine then eveyrthing is fine, but the initial pathing approach appears to treat the burning heart map in a very idiosyncratic way. Tried this with numerous hirelings, it always turns out the same.

I've done that one a couple of times. It works fine, but the range that the lever can be seen from is almost too far away for finding it w/ backspace. You have to be careful not to click off it.

It's been a couple weeks since I tried it last. In the Crucible, the "I" switch, the hirelings (and it didn't seem to matter which one I used) seemed to be around 70% of the time they'd try to wander around to the other side of the wall to hit the switch that was right in front of them, attempt the switch from that side, then go right back to standing in front of the switch again. You'd have to try several times and eventually they would use the switch. I don't have a /loc, but hopefully reference to the "I" switch is enough to take a look.

Switches in the Crucible looking good. There are some switches in the world where hirelings make 'interesting' choices on the path they use to get to them, but these are no longer part of that club.

A challenge eh?

-Hireling in ADQ failed to use the switch in the "penalty chamber".
-Of course... he also failed to kill all the mobs in the "penalty chamber" that unlock that switch first.
-Which all came down to his initial failure of self teleporting into the penalty chamber when he saw there were mobs inside of it... this was just after entering the quest while clearing that top hub of mobs. This is why we don't leave the hirelings on "aggressive stance" anymore.

Best hireling seppuku ever!

Also the lever on Codog's kid's castle bed that drops the burning oil on invading inlaws. My hireling can't reach it.

This one was so funny I had to try it. Unfortunately I couldn't reproduce the issue with my hireling. Do you remember who your hireling was?

It was one of the L12-13 cleric I believe. I was toggling him from defensive stance to active stance since sometimes that makes him kick out the mass cure lt to hit the whole group. (Still trying to figure out why every hireling cleric has cure lt (non-mass) on their hot bar instead of ANYTHING more useful. Maybe you could use it to use the last of their spell bar. Hmm... or maybe it tells them to use their wand if they're out of mana.) I'll ask my group if they remember anything else about how we "convinced him" to dive through the locked floor gate. Sadly we dismissed him and someone else pulled in the "new redshirt"... too zergy to go get his stone.

P.S: Guildy says my mind is going since he thinks this incident occurred just before the Patch 3 went live. I'll try again tonight.

The first shrine in Splinteskull is mentioned, however no mention of the very last shrine (just before Yaruch and after the trapped hallway). Hirelings have a tendency to die often, and it was rather gut wrenching to note they wont use the rez shrine in that last mission. ;)

So!

QUEST: Yarkuch's Last Stand (finale to Splinterskull)
WHAT: Shrine (specifically if memory serves they refuse to use the rez shrine)
LOCATION: Approximately, the shrine located after the trapped hallway and just before the door leading into Yarkuch's inner chamber.

P.S. A very heartfelt thank you for getting all of these spots, doing VoN 3 with my husband was made even more difficult; given the stubborn hirelings wouldn't use any of the shrines. My husband and I have thusly deduced that those shrines must not have been made by the hirelings union and are thus off limits.

I'm not sure if this is exactly the place to post this, but we figured out last night that the hirelings seem much more inclined to use shrines if they are in "active" stance. If they are in "defense" stance I can mash away at the "use" button and they'll just stand there like "durrr" Switch them to active, they'll automatically use the rez shrine and will use the rest shrine when you ask them more often than not. And if they don't, I chuck em from party and summon a new one :)

Just a little workaround I thought I'd mention.

Now I know this isn't switch related, but any chance we can have contracts stack? I understand them not stacking back when we they had timers, but now that they don't it's very impractical to carry several of them for each of a quest's stages, and it's even worse having to run back to get more.

Threnal East, West, and South checked with Flare, who was able to use all the shrines we passed (may have missed 1-2 zerging but I made it a point to try for them all). The 1-2 I had problems with before were working properly, either because of fixes between this run and my last, or because of the different hireling (previously I had used a cleric one). Ill be going through some other missions as well, notably GH, and will check them as well.

Good suggestion.

Hey Thoon, can we maybe get an "Official Discussion Thread" for Hirelings in general? Since this one is specific for the switches/levers stuff, I don't want to hijack it for other types of feedback. But I do like the stacking the contract idea, since space is at a premium for some of us. I was also going to ask if we could get a ‘Stealth’ button added to the hireling toolbar, since there are times you don’t want your passive hireling to draw aggro. I’m sure there are other suggestions for improving hirelings as well, but no real place to leave the feedback…

ANY wizard in the "Recovering the Lost Tome" beyond the first int rune in the skelly/undead room and the int rune to deactivate the zombies on the tables in the "final" lever room (that means runes 2 and 3 AND the Mephit rune are accessed but the hireling does NOTHING even though it's the same int qualifications as the first actived rune.)

All of these runes check out fine. Updated thread.

Just curious...when you say "checked out fine" does that mean they are verified that they are fixed in the new mod, or that you are testing the current mod and not seeing the problem?

I'm pretty sure he's testing their current Mod 9 build for bugs we're reporting from current Mod 8 Patch 3 on the live servers. Thoon's also filing a bug on Codog if the problem is still in their current Mod 9 test build.

Otherwise, it would be like he's calling us liars by saying the bug isn't on the current live server. :( (I mean... we lie... just not about hireling shortcomings).

Hireling wizards/sorcs/clerics need extend on buffs! High level ones REALLY NEED quicken on combat/healing/repair actions. Hirelings... they aren't so bad... they just need a little respec.

Hail the cube!

Gratch is correct. I am checking each of the shrines/runes/wheels/switches/levers in the most current Module 9 build.

Be sure to check all the shadow crypt quests I noticed the hirelings where afraid of the shrines out in necro (also had some problems in the tangle root series).

Fantastic! This is really a great thread, Thoon. Great way to get us involved in helping (instead of our normal whining and complaining)....

What: Rest Shrine.

He can use the Rez shrine, but not the rest one. I've tried putting him into active mode, standby, passive - nothing. Even tried getting him to approach it from different angles.

Okay, been through most of the GH quests and havent run into anything new. PoP levers, and a few other shrines like the one across the pit and the crucible one, but I believe those have all been stated and verified as fixed. Looking good for hireling game play in the new mod, which is very nice. The sorc one Ive been using is even making semi intelligent spell choices. Has their casting AI been tweaked to be a lot less lame? Or did I just get a hireling with an above average spell lineup.

My hireling can't reach it.

buahahhahahhahahahahah.

We've had the same issue with Arkyn. I think you need to roll percentile 95 or better....Other than that he's a great hireling.

All the health shrines - resurrect work for hirelings but not health.

Also the ones in Tomb of the Crimson Heart.

I don't think this one was mentioned before, but I might have missed it:

Quest: Raid the Vulkoorim

Levers: All the levers to the scorpion spawn chambers/barriers

I tried to solo this quest yesterday and got a bit frustrated because you cannot drop the chamber barriers to the scorpion spawns and complete the quest by yourself. Each chamber barrier has two levers in the back that have to be pulled at the same time. I pulled out a hireling thinking that would solve the problem, but unfortunately the hireling would not interact with any of the levers I tried.

Hirelings will almost never teleport above ground level regardless of quest
we all do it, so why cant the hireling?

ie: jump up on a mushroom and firewall monsters below etc.
ie: teleport one upto a swich in a quest thats about ground level.

Trying to get hirlings to use almost any of there "extra" features on the bar is a challenge. Any spell or function that is above or below their position is very hard for them or even moving for that matter - like say firewall those archers on the ledge .. no firewall .. no firewall - **** cast cure spell - FIREWALL THOSE **** ARCHERS!!!! dead hirling AGAIN. It would be nice if they would just come to your side when you click feet button - this would make up for thier lack of ability to do what you want when you want them to or even still not doing it a minute later or 2 .... And yes he was in range to firewall them he did it latter and no he was not taking damage I got the agro first and was ranging them - anyway. Maybe the hirling could say I can not they are out of range etc - or like I say just give us an oh **** button were they return to our side to make up for all the irritation.

If you hirling dies he will have a hard time using the over the wall shrine (first one) in Jungle of Kyhber

The second shrine in bargain bazaar has a pathing bug just north of the shrine. If you go north past the Ladder that goes up to a platform that has (1 archer , 1 lever, 1 trap box). And try and pull the hirelings back they'll go around in circles.

Also if you climb the ladder to that platform, call the hireling to you, then drop down the hireling will completely loose the plot and leave the party.

Any explanation as to the cause of the significant lag spikes while using a hireling cleric? Whenever I run with one I will inevitably end up being able to walk around but not interact with anything in real time. I can swing at anything... breakables, mobs etc but the results will not show up for minutes later... and by minutes I mean like 10 to 15 at times. This is pervasive. I really do not experience terrible lag anywhere else in the game. I use hirelings all the time. I find them incredibly useful. This however is costing me tons of xp pot minutes and lost game time. I really would like to see it addressed or at least explained.
