so i've got a little L7 sorc, and he has the damage enhancements for fire/cold spells. i think his bonus is now up to 30%. i also picked up this scepter which is a improved combustion IV item, stating that it gives +30% dmg to all L4 and under spells (like fireball). do these stack? i.e., do my fireballs go out with +60% dmg now?
thx!

..and as a follow up, are there pots which could give another supplemental dmg boost, to use in special situations (bosses, etc)?

Yes items and enchancments stack
I don't think items and potions that provide a bonus stack, although i'm not completly sure.

Enhancements stack with everything.
Bonuses provided by items, potions or clickies do not stack together.

Also, the potions are available for sale in House Jorasco and House Phiarlan at the same shops where wands are sold.
I think the ones from Phiarlan are the superior pots, which offer a 20 second timer of 50% boost to whatever spell category it affects.
Clerics can get ardor pots to affect healing, wizards and sorcs can get combustion, impact, and freeze to affect fire, force and cold. There's more, but those are the ones I've seen people choose to use.
Once you get the Teleport spell, you can go to the Portable Hole, and it also sells these potions, along with everything else a wizard needs for his/her spellbooks.

the pots do not stack with items however. Your goal is to watch the AH for one handed potency items.
lesser is 10%
potency is 20%
improved is 30%
greater is 40%
and superior is 50%
a lvl 7 sorc is using max lvl 3 spells, so look for potency 3 items, in the clubs/dagger and light mace section, or save up and get a potency 4 item when you hit lvl 8 and have firewall

ya...at L7, i found an impr. combustion IV scepter. it may only be +30%, but it will work on scorching ray, fireball, and firewall (when i get it) which is nice. so i think i'm good for a bit.
thx for all the help!

While they don't stack, the higher of the two effects does take precedence.
If you were to purchase some Superior Combustion V pots, you could use them when you want your fire spells to do just that little extra.
It's all in how hard you want to press yourself in the game... If you plan to run the Wizard King on elite with a group of level 8 people, you'll need every advantage you can find.

true, there was a time I used to do that my best recollection being against the vampire using greater impact potions on my magic missile on church and the cult. But these days potency items can be had for decent prices at all levels, and the need ofr potions has severely diminished.
