My friends sisters aunts nephews hamburger told me that the plan for dps to be desirable in mod 9 is well into the works:

They plan to add hp to barrels and crates. No more ransack for w/p chars!

I was like "no way they'd do that" but then I realized, it might be balanced. Doubly so when I found out that crates and barrels are flagged as halflings, so favored enemy construct doesn't help against them.

You heard it here first!

Dude, your barrel story is a barrel of lies.

The truth, really, mean it, fo shizzle, is that they're converting to the D&D rarely talked about D40 system so that level appropriate quests can better scale to both pimped characters and casual players.

Mournlanders were heard to say:
"Dude... that Orthon totally rolled a 40 to hit my monk/rogue/ranger."
"Crud... I rolled a 2 on my save... which is the new also fail."
"Stupid revised Abbot's 20d40 horrid wilting!!!"

Actually, going to a D50 system would really help DDO's balance at this point. :p
