View Full Version : What's there to look forward to after we're all level 20

Admittedly my knowledge of D&D previous to this game was slim, at best. I'm not an expert in prestige classes or all the other bells and whistles that happen at higher levels.
Don't get me wrong. I love the game and enjoy rerolling and leveling up toons. And this topic isn't intended to be made in a negative way but I'm not really sure how else to phrase the question.
I'm just curious as to what the next dangling carrot will be after we all have our characters maxxed out at level 20. At this time, we're all looking forward to finally leveling up the characters that we've been capped out on for a year.
But what is there to work toward at 20? After we're all capped at level 20 and have our various enhancements, is there a way we can continue to make progress on our characters? Or will the main goal become trying to find +10 AC bracers instead of +9 or striving to get +4 tomes in each of our stats?
And I don't mean to lump everyone into the same category by saying that the game is all about loot and XP because I know it's not. I've had countless great times in PUG's and guild groups and dang near rolled outta my chair laughing hysterically at events that have happened in game.
Just sayin that when it comes to gear and stats for my chars, is level 20 "the end"?

Good question, but probably one you need to ask yourself instead of others.
I don't say that to be a smart alec, but rather because I find my personal motivations already differ from many on the boards. I, personally, don't enjoy playing capped characters very much. I can't stand "losing" experience points.
This means, of course, that I very rarely run any raids or do any high level "loot runs".
I require more character progression than a chance at maybe improving a piece of gear.
I am obviously in the minority, because lots of people evidently enjoy doing the same content with their capped characters ad nauseum.

I look forward to spending more time in bed with the wife, because I'll be bored of DDO, and what else is there to do besides the hibbity dibbity, lol.

Probably because the majority dislike running WW with a different build ad nauseum.

Well, if I look at what other games have done, and think about what a few should do....
A) Castles/Homesteads/Fifedoms- even Guild Halls.
A place to call your own, where you and your toons can do some non adventure related things such as...
1) Personal Gate to difficult areas, or quest entrances
2) Additional storage for potions, scrolls, cash, etc.
3) Set up your own "capture the flag" scenarios or other mini dunegons that you have to stock.
B) Artifiact Quests- High end chain quests that let you have items of high power (yes, more powerful than the Shroud), which due to the nature of time to complete, and level of difficulty, take time to assemble. (yes...a designed time sink)
C) Enhanced Crafting/businesses - A way to make items, or ingreedients, and a place to sell them. Having an experience point cost to making magic items would mean you never really had to "top out", and we don't have to worry about Monty Haul in this campaign...Monty has left the building in shame cause he can't keep up.
Letting people make useful, but not the highest level items, will give a reason as to why someone built those Ghost Touch Clubs of Construct Bane. The builder was a noob, and did not know what he was doing....anyway, having the ability to add a bit more flavor, design and names to items might be a way to keep people involved in the creative process.
Just a few...

Can we call this place QwijyWorld? :D
It is a fantasy world of low low discount prices, and a value that just can't be beat! Pots? No problem? Wands by special order!
Yes, QwijyWorld is a magical land, where the prices, and the people, are down under!

As a long term player my characters are always at the level cap, and whenever new levels are released the time it takes to cap is always less then the time it takes for the next level raise to come. I have come accustomed to playing at the highest level of available content. I actually like it, there is where the best players are, and your failure rate is diminished because of the quality of play.
Raiding allows for large groups of capped players to work together to improve their characters by acquiring powerful items. This has been the way the game has usually been, whether the cap was at 10, 14, or 16. I see no difference way the cap at 20 will be no different.
Why should the lack of gaining experience cause you to stop playing your favorite characters? I have often hear in lower level pugs the more casual player say something similar to "I can't wait for the level cap to raise so I can play my (insert class her) again". My question is why can't you play that character now?
I find that I equally enjoy modules with or without level increases because the game for me is not about the acquisition of experience but instead the completion of quests. As long as new and exciting adventures that further along the overarching storyline of DDO I will be happy no matter what level my characters are. Plus the Phat Lewts.

They will implement 4.0 rules and it will be time to quit.

When i hit 20 on my current lvl 16 toons, i will prolly do what the current cap allowed me to do, lvl up lower lvls. When cap hit 16, i only had 3 toons to go from previous cap to 16. My bard had sat stagnant for so long, my ranger was lvl 10 from 2 years ago and my others were just plain old low lvl nothing.
I lvlled three to 16, then worked my bard up to cap too. Then i quit the game for a bit. Came back, rerolled up evasion pally that is currently lvl 15 and took my ranger from lvl 10 to 15, both are going to hit lvl 16 with one more shroud run each.
I have also been able to run a cleric from start to lvl 10 atm. So when i hit lvl 20 on my lvl 16s, i will just lvl up my other lowbies, same as before.
When they are all lvl 20, i will do what i have been doing up to this point and thats running raids to get them the gear i want for them.

I agree. I like having a goal when I play - feeling like I am accomplishing something (lol!) Loot runs are useful, but I find leveling up an alt more fun :)
I was wondering the same thing as the OP - are there plans for post-level 20? Are epic levels in the works? I would think they would continue to add new content, but I am guessing even the most casual gamers will get bored eventually if there are no more level increases.
I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it, I am looking forward to the new mod and don't expect to cap all my alts any time soon :)

How could there not be, unless you think Turbine is just going to roll up the game and call it quits.
