So while I'm (again) hesitating about whether to go 2hf/s&b vs 2wf for a pure pally, I got thinking about this sword
I know they're coming- but is there any kind of game mechanic that anyone knows about that could (or even should) ensure that if these turn out to be super awesome killing blades of holy death, that you won't be able to dual wield them?

I can see S&B Pallys (of course) using one, and (maybe) 2hf's using a big one, but haven't played D&D since second edition, so I wasn't sure if there was some prohibition agaisnt being able to use two of them.

Really I think I'm just grasping for arguments not to dual wield like my friends are telling me.

I assume that they'll be more than one weapon (ie Longsword,Khopesh etc) but even if you make them unique for a player, is there any game mechanic that might set it up so you couldn't have (say) a Longsword and a Khopesh?

Traditionally the Holy Avenger was a 1 handed slashing weapon, normally a longsword.

If the devs have any sense then this weapon will bind on acquire and be an exclusive item (meaning a character can only have 1 at a time). To do this they may limit it to 1 particular weapon type but I am sure they will be able to work around that if they want.

Alternatively they may do it like the Misery's peak reward option and make it so that you only receive the option of taking the item once no matter how many times you do the quest. That would be a bad idea as a character may want to change from S&B/TWF to THF, or vice versa, later in their career and the option to go back and get a different version (at the cost of destroying the one you already have) would be beneficial.

I'd be supportive of the idea of having one for each weapon the Paladin uses (like a Zealot Prestige Class), but Borror0 and Angelus_Dead would likely regard them as overpowered. Meanwhile, Holy Sword for an offhand while Holy Avenger mainhand will have to do.

I would like to think the Dev's make a bit of variety in types but will be exclusive so we can only own the one at a time.
If I can't use a Greatsword on my WF palli I'll be a sad panda :(

I think in the DM guide, the Holy Avenger is said only to be a longsword.

Depending on which books you look in, in the Paladins Handbook there were a variety of different holy swords that one could aspire to use. Additionally in Baldurs Gate game series there was a 2Hander named Corsymar, i think thats how its spelt, that was an upgraded +6 Holy Avenger.

Quite often in campaigns a Holy Avenger was also a Bastard Sword, just depended on campaign and GM, there is never a set rule as to what a sword is or isnt. Books are only guidelines.

To touch on something you said Steele, perhaps make it something like the Adamantine Ore from BAM, where you could forge an item with x amount of ore and and a later stage go back and trade in what you had made for something else, you could only have one NightForged Item per character, BUT you had the option of changing it later if you desired. Same system could be used for Holy Avenger in the event you changed from S@B to 2HF.
